Diet for PCOS (PCOD Diet tips)

Last Updated on June 16, 2019 | RD, Payal Banka (Registered Dietitian) 508 Comments

Polycystic ovarian disease (PCOD) has a constellation of symptoms. Therefore, it is also known as a polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Don’t get depressed, there is always a solution to every problem. Before you understand some tips on diet for PCOS, let’s first take a look at what it’s all about.
diet for pcos

What is PCOD?

As the name suggests, the primary characteristics of this syndrome is the presence of numerous cysts in the ovary. This is caused by an imbalance in the hormone, due to excess production of androgen, although scientists are not very clear why this happens. Women who have PCOD normally have high levels of insulin in their blood. The right diet for PCOS is thus very important.

What are the symptoms of PCOD?

The symptoms of PCOD are variedย in different women and often is based on the severity of the condition. As androgen is typically a male hormone, many women develop some male characteristics in advanced stages of PCOD such as hirsutism (increased hair growth in the chest, back, fingers, toes, etc.) and male pattern baldness. Other symptoms associated with PCOD are:

Infertility
Ovarian cysts
Infrequent periods
Painful periods
Insulin resistance
Acanthosis nigricans (presence of dark, thick velvety skin in body folds)
Obesity
Insulin resistance syndrome (poor blood sugar control)
High cholesterol
High blood pressure

The significance of losing weight

There is a vicious cycle involved here. Women who have PCOD tend to put on weight and have difficulty losing it. In order to bring their hormone levels under control, they need to lose weight. The right diet for PCOS can work effectively to cut down on weight, here are some tips on ย diet for PCOS

Diet for PCOS : –

The most important tip on the diet for PCOS would be to cut down on simple sugars. Sugary foods bring about a surge in the blood sugar levels, which places undue stress on the body. In the long run, this leads to poor control of blood sugar and weight gain. Cutting down on sugary foods becomes very crucial when you have PCOD. The correct diet for PCOS includes complex carbs instead of simple ones. It is important to develop a taste for nutritious foods rather than eating junk. Here is a table that shows what to have and what to avoid in the diet for PCOS.

IncludeAvoid
Whole wheat productsRefined flour products/maida
Whole grain / whole wheat breadWhite bread
wholegrain / whole wheat pastawhite pasta
Barley,ย natural diuretic fruitsFast foods
Oats, cornCakes, cookies, sweets, chocolates
Raw fruits and vegetablesHigh fructose corn syrup
Fresh fishSorbitol
Lean meatsSoft drinks and soda
Protein shakesBengali mithai, sweets, desserts

Other than these tips on diet for PCOS, some lifestyle modifications willย also help.

Other lifestyle modifications that help

1. Drink plenty of water:

Drink at least 2 liters of water per day. Flavored water will help. In order to overcome this, try to drink one glass of water whenever the clock strikes the hour. This way, you can incorporate it in your daily routine and stay hydrated throughout the day. Regular intake of water will help with detoxification as well as avoid water retention in the body. You may feel bloated all the time, another reason forย not wanting to drink water. But drinking more water will actually help you in flushing this accumulated water and feel lighter. You need to lose that water weight.

2. Exercise:

Regular exercise will not only help you reduce weight, but will help lessen binge eating. The feel-good hormones (serotonin and dopamine) released with exercise will keep your stress levels also low.

3. Free your life of stress:

The stressors will not vanish, but a daily 1-hour meditation is great to keep yourself from feeling stressed. There are other things that help you feel less stressed, like yoga, music, doing something you really love, and above all taking life a little less seriously. Since stress is a contributing factor of weight gain and PCOD, learning to unwind help.

4. Quit smoking for good:

Experts say that smoking stimulates androgen production, the main culprits of PCOD characteristics. So, kick the butt for good.

5. Say NO to alcohol:

We all know that alcohol affects the liver function, which in turn affects hormone balance. Saying NO to alcohol will not only keep your liver healthy but also check PCOD progression.

Endnote :

Whether it is to fulfill your motherly instincts, regaining your feminine charm, or improving your general health and well-being, the progression of PCOD is something that needs to be checked sooner than later. These tips on diet for PCOS will help.

    Hi Payal,

    Thanks for the information provided.
I am 24 yrs old , weighing 61kg with a height of 168cm. I have a decent diet consisting fruits everyday and eat healthy meals. I also play either lawn tennis or badminton everyday. So I’m pretty healthy otherwise.

I have been suffering with PCOD right from the time I started menstruating (10 yrs back) since I’ve had irregular periods from the beginning. On detection, I started with Begomet SR 500 and Premence had have had them for 3-4 yeras. My periods are still irregular and if I have my medicines regularly I get them within 2 months. My doctor recently changed them to Normoz that I have now.
Is there something you recommended which would improve my condition? I ask this because I am extremely worried about my thinning hair and have tried various things to improve the condition but without success. I am pretty sure its because of my pcod and hence believe that improving my condition would prevent hair loss.

Your advice shall be extremely appreciated.

    Thanks and regards,
    Swetha

      Hi Swetha,

food wise just follow the tips mentioned above. this is a hormonal issue, and its difficult for me to suggest anyhting. if you were obese or overweight, reducing weight would have helped, but that too isnt a case with you. sorry i am not being of much help , but frankly a doctor would know better.

      Hi Parvathy,

pcos is a very confusing issue i know , where everything works well while on medication , but when you leave them the problems arise again . well weight management is very importqant in managing it . you mentioned your weight is same from last 3 years while you diet and exercise too . but there is something not write. if you are eating right and exercising right, the weight would go down , even if it is slow, but it will go down . please see a dietician in person and show your reports and mention food details so that they can analyse the problem well.

you eat simple , the problem i that there is hardly any fiber in your diet , hence the built up ldl is not taken care off. include fruiots and fibrous cereal in your meal.

      Hi Parvathy ,

dont worry , there will not be much problem if you manage your diet and exercise . hepatomegaly requires low fat diet , so eat as little fat in your diet as possible. just follow the diet essentials and continue with a heavy workout.

      Hi Salini ,

Thanks for reading at Dietburrp. you can increasze your morning workout from 30 mins to 45 mins . this will help. medicines , what your doctor has said is correct , normally the progress is observed for 6 cycles and then based on the results , the doctor decides about the future steps. if you doc has suggested metphormine, then i suppose you should take it . dont be depressed , you mentioned that you got married just an year back .. so chill and be persistent with your medications and aim to remain healthy and fit . stress and depression are biggest hurdle in the way to conceive. so just chill and keep trying at your best .

      Hi Preeti,

what is your height ? and what is your weight ? if you happen to be overweight, then losing weight will help you in great deal . pcod is not permanent. If you handle it well , maintain your weight and health , conceiving is possible and you will not face problems during pregnancy.

But i am quite worried right now that it has been more than 3 months that i haven’t get my period. Is there a possibility that this syndrome can be serious by any chance? If I am experiencing PCOD, an has so period, will i get a chance to be pregnant? Is there any natural way to eliminate the cysts aside from being medicated?

      Hi Jem ,

i understand your confusion , dont bother dear , to get pregnant you have to have an intercourse, and absence of periods without any intercourse does not really make you pregnant. so relax. medicines are needed in pcod . its an hormonal issue , and difficult to be treated without medicines.

    Hello Mam,

Thank u sooo much for giving infrmtn abt PCOD . I’am 20 yrs old and weigh about 45kg . My height is about 153cm. I was in a close stage of PCOD last year and i was under homeo treatment. My doc told me to continue that medicine for 1 yr. I went to doc for consultation due to my ireggular periods . While taking medicines my periods came regular for 2 months and then i thought it will b normal so i stopped taking medicines. Nw its being 7 months my periods has stopped. And i have a lot of unwanted facial hairs and also a kind of black markings on my back shoulders. And these facial hairs and black markings are increasing day by day. I also have fats on my hips. I’am really nervous , so from yesterday onwards I restarted to take my medicine. I’am really afraid about my condition. What should I do..?? could u plzzzzzzzz help me to gt over it. Plzz rply me as soon as possible I’am really depressed.

      Hi Hridya,

Please dont be upset . what you have is hormonal imbalance , only medicines can cure this. please do not break the medicine routine without doctors knowledge . if you feel very bloated or depressed, that could be again because of hormones. so i would suggest you to first visit a doctor , take allopathy medicines for at least a month , and when everything settles, you can again continue with your homeopathy treatment. but keep it going . do stop taking the medicines unless it is cured . food and exercises are support system to your medicines, but they alone cannot treat your hormonal imbalance. so cheer up and please see a doctor to start with.

I am so depressed about this issue. reducing weight will alone solve this problem or should i need to do something else. will this be a barrier in the future to become pregnant.

      Hi Lakshmi,

right now, you are only stressed and tensed. I know of a lot of women with pcos and pcod , who after a few months of efforts were able to conceive and are doing just fine. so first thing , stop stressing yourself . relax , just concentrate on your medications , diet and exercises and keep trying to conceive . Managing your weight is important.

Don’t mind me replying you !
Just make sure oral pills suits you or not !
it didn’t suit me and I am warned not to take them !
just take another opinion and go forward !
There are other safe medicines too .

      Hi Neeti ,

You are not eatring anything !! this is the reason behind no weight loss. your bosy has entered in to famine mode and hence no further weight loss is seen . Break in the high protein , high fiber diet you are doing and see how it helps you in losing weight. Please please please eat something or else you would land in major health issues. tAKE A BREAK FROM THIS HEAVY DIET CHART , CONTINUE WITH EXERCISE AND AFTER A WEEK START A FRESH WITH https://www.dietburrp.com/indian-diet-plan-for-weight-loss/ th is plan , and see you will lose weight !!
