Enlarged Prostrate Diet Plan

What is the Prostate?

The prostate is an accessory gland. It manages the mechanical switch between urination and ejaculation. After the age of 25 years, the prostate naturally starts growing which happens throughout life. It is a walnut-sized gland found under the urinary bladder, surrounding the urethra.

Why does the Prostate Enlarge?

  • The prostate tends to grow throughout life.
  • This is because the testosterone gets converted into dihydrotestosterone.
  • Enlarged prostate is a health issue faced by aged men.
  • Most of the time this is benign, but in certain cases, it can turn cancerous.
  • This condition is known as benign prostate hyperplasia.
  • It is a common health issue amongst men above 50 years of age.
  • It can be solved either with medicine or surgery if necessary.

Symptoms of Enlarged Prostate

  • Difficulty in passing urine
  • Frequent urination, especially during the night
  • Incomplete emptying of the bladder
  • Dribbling following urination
  • Constant feeling of urination
  • Pain during urination
  • The unusual smell in urine in extreme cases

At times these symptoms can be due to various other reasons like those mentioned below.

  • Prostate infection
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Obesity
  • Bladder cancer
  • Prostate cancer

So it is important to rule out the basic cause of the symptoms first and then declare if the person is suffering from benign prostate hyperplasia.

When to Meet a Doctor?

  • Frequent urination more than 6 to 7 times during the night
  • No urination at all
  • Blood in urine
  • Pain during urination

Treatment of Enlarged Prostrate

  • Medication

It is difficult to reverse the enlarged prostate. However, some medications help to shrink the size of the prostate gland or help prevent further growth of the prostate. Few medicines relax the muscles around the bladder and help in proper urination. If medications do not work, surgery is the last option.

  • Kegel exercises

Exercises like walking, jogging, and swimming can help to maintain overall health. But kegel exercises can help to strengthen the pelvic muscles. These exercises cannot cure enlarged prostate or reverse the prostate size, but help strengthen pelvic muscles. To perform kegel exercises you need to lie down on your back, fold both knees and try to squeeze your anus and pelvic muscles. Do it 10 to 20 times in 3 sets. The second exercise you can perform is while urinating, hold the urine mid-stream for a few seconds, and start urinating again. Do this 2 to 3 times each time you urinate.

  • Diet

A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and omega-3 fatty acids will help relieve symptoms of prostate. Antioxidant-rich foods help to reduce the inflammation on and around the prostate.

Here is a list of food that you can include in the Enlarged Prostrate Diet Plan.

Food to include in Enlarged Prostrate Diet Plan

  • Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals. These nutrients help to reduce enlarged prostate symptoms. The antioxidants help to reduce stress and inflammation. Fruits rich in vitamin C and beta-carotene have a beneficial effect on the enlarged prostate. Include  5 – 6 servings of fruits and vegetables in your daily diet. Eat all colorful fruits and vegetables to gain the benefits of the different antioxidants present in different foods. Broccoli helps to promote a healthy prostate. Different berries help to reduce oxidative stress in the body.

  • Vitamin D

Vitamin D deficiency can lead to an enlarged prostate. Sufficient vitamin D in the body might help prevent early prostate enlargement. Consume seafood or fortified foods to get vitamin D naturally or opt for a vitamin D supplement course once a year. Exposure to sun rays in the morning for a few minutes also helps to make vitamin D in the body.

  • Omega 3-rich foods

Omega 3 helps to reduce prostate enlargement-associated inflammation. Omega 3 also helps to reduce urinary symptoms. Include foods like olive oil, flaxseeds, fish, seeds, and nuts rich in omega 3.

  • Nuts

Nuts are rich in minerals, especially zinc. Zinc helps to maintain the hormonal balance between testosterone and dihydrotestosterone. Nuts are also rich in omega 3 which will help improve prostate health.
