Top Benefits Of Cardamom on Health ( Elaichi )

Cardamom is known as elaichi in India. It is an ingredient in traditional Indian desserts and other dishes for the lovely aroma and strong flavor it imparts. It is not only taste but health benefits of cardamom that makes it a preferred spice.

What are the Types of Cardamom and What is Cardamom used for ?

  • Green Cardamom / Choti Elaichi – It is green in color and small in size. It imparts a pleasing aroma and enhances flavors. Green Cardamom is primarily used in desserts and drinks.
  • Black cardamom / Badi Elaichi – This is black in color and bigger in size . It may be used in spicy preparations with strong flavors, like rice, spicy stews, curries and garam masala.

1] Improves Digestion

Cardamom helps in stimulation and regular excretion of gastric juices in the stomach. It helps in balancing these acids in cases of acidity, thus providing relief during heart burns. A good benefit of cardamom is chewing it after a meal. This helps those suffering from flatulence and gas. Cardamom is also beneficial in relieving stomach cramps and hiccups.

Cardamom helps in relieving muscle spasms and tremors. It improves blood circulation to the lungs and can be helpful for those suffering from whooping cough, sore throat, asthma or bronchitis.

3] Detoxifying agent

Cardamom helps in cleansing of body. It is considered to be a refinement spice against caffeine. Cardamom also helps those who want to quit addictions like smoking, alcohol, tobacco chewing, and even those who have a sweet tooth. It eliminates urges.

Cardamom contains phytochemicals like Indole -3- carbinol (IC3) and di –indolylmethane (DIM). These helps in fighting hormone responding cancers like prostate cancer, ovarian and breast cancers.

8] Good source of minerals

It contains potassium, calcium and magnesium. These minerals play a role in controlling heart rates, blood pressure and are important component of body fluids and cells.

It also contains copper, manganese and iron. These contribute to cardamom’s antioxidant and blood cell formation properties.

The benefits of cardamom have been known to mankind since ancient times. In Ayurveda, cardamom is referred to as “Tridoshic” and is used in balancing the three doshas of human body.

  • I am almost 30 weeks pregnant and and craving boiled milk with powdered cardamom is 1 tea spoon on a cup of milk once a day too much? Is it safe to drink it while breastfeeding?

      you can have 2-3 cardamom , daily , even while breast feeding .. there is nt any issue .

  • I took 1-2 cardomome daily for whole last month ,and just after missing the period I realized I m pregnant, as I read on Google that cardomome make blood thinner ,so I just left to eat it, kindly tell me has it hurt my baby, or wat shud I eat to make balance of it.Thnq

  • Hello everyone,This is the first time I am commenting on something like this but Guess its very important.Me and my sister were cardamom addicts for like 2 years and more than the advantages..We were going through the side effects which are :-
    1.Severe mouth and tongue ulcers
    2.throat tightness
    3.doesn't digest fast
    4.Spoils teeth and also breaks them
    5.Decreases haemoglobin level which is worst of all..My sister haemoglbin went from 10 to 6 due to 7-8 pieces of cardamom in a day

  • Hi....i hv mucus....can i take black caradamom tea for removing the mucus naturally .....I am 22 weeks pregnant....I dont want to take any antibiotic in this stage....is black caradamom safe for me?

      congratulations dear. Yes you can have black cardamom , but have only 1 - 2 pieces of it . you can also include other natural antibiotics in food . like tulsi leaves , turmeric powder, garlic , mulethi sticks, very little ginger.

  • Hello I have been taking 6 cardamoms after each deed to avoid pregnancy. Though I m not sure about not being pregnant but I haven't had my periods since my last born who is 7 months.

      it is normal to noit get periods after delivery for almost a year . and many women dont get it that soon . so not to worry . However , there are high chances of re conceiving , and i really dont think that eating cardamom can alone act as a anti - pregnancy act for you . You need better .
