“Period” is it women’s biggest friend or foe? It is referred to the menstrual bleeding, every female of the age between 14 – 50 years experiences every month. It is consequence of the hormonal changes in the body where the uterus renews its inner lining. This phenomenon occurs every month until pregnancy sets in and resumes back post-partum.

Menstruation is accompanied by various symptoms like cramps, body ache, inflammation of abdominal area, heavy bleeding or bloating. There are occasions where we women don’t want such discomforts and want to experience a blissful moments. Thus we try to delay our period.

Is it safe to delay periods?

Interfering with natural bodily process is not advised. But, there are times when we have little option of not doing so.

The first and best way we follow is to take prescribed or over the counter hormone pill. It provides with quick and effective solution, but has lots of side effects. These side effects may vary from person to person.

The side effects of Pills to delay periods –

  • Heavy bleeding in the following cycle ,
  • High intensity cramps ,
  • Physical and mental discomfort.

Unless extremely urgent, we suggest to not select this method. The body needs to bleed every months or it increases the risk of uterine cancer.

But if we try natural remedies, we can minimise the side effects. So now you may be thinking on how to delay periods with Indian home remedies ? here are some tips on How to delay periods with Indian home remedies .

How to delay periods with Indian home remedies

  • Ditch the spice:

Spicy food tends to increase your blood flow and trigger menstrual cycle. If you want to postpone the menstrual cycle, the best way is to eliminate all types of spicy food. For example garlic, chillies and black pepper. ( Read – How to treat Indigestion and gas  )

  • Avoid heat causing foods:

Herbs such as basil, fruits such as papaya, pineapple, eggs or meat are known to cause early periods. So, eliminate all such things from your diet 10 – 15 days prior to your cycle date. (Read – Benefits of papaya)

  • Keep stress at bay:

Stress can interfere with your menstrual cycle. Stress causes ill effects on your hormones which either causes a delayed period or an early period.Either way, you are unaware when you will get your period. So, avoid stressing yourself.

These exercises surge the release of endorphins thus delaying the period naturally.

  • Processed lentil:

Lentils if consumed on daily basis delay your periods. They also help in experiencing lighter period and also reduce complications involved.

Just a small process to follow and you can get the desired effect. Fry the lentils till soft and then grind it in powder. Consume soup prepared from this powder daily to delay your period.

  • Dash of lemon:

Lemon water

Take a tablespoon of lemon juice with water daily before sleeping. Practice this for a few days for desired results. This will not only delay the periods naturally for a few days but also detox your body.

  • Wonders of Vinegar:

Consume 3-4 spoons of vinegar in a glass of filtered water, 2- 3 times in a day. This will help you to delay your periods by 3-4 days. It will also give symptomatic relief during menstruation.

  • Parsley leaves:

Boil few chopped parsley leaves in water for 20 minutes. Strain the water and add 1 teaspoon of honey and consume it. Drink this twice a day till you want to push back your cycle.

  • Gelatin:

Mix gelatin in warm water and consume it thrice in a day. Local research confirms if consume once the period is delayed by 4 hours. So drink thrice regularly for few days to delay your cycle.

  • Tamarind pulp:

Soak 15 grams of tamarind in a glass of water. Filter the seeds and add a pinch of sugar and salt to the mixture for taste. This will delay your period for quite a few days.

  • Bananas:

Indian foods rich in complex carbohydrates 3

2 bananas followed by a cup of water for breakfast at least 4-5 days before your cycle delays the menses. This helps in a 2 – 3 days delay.

  • Raspberry leaf tea:

Completely dry the raspberry leaves and powder it. Make a concoction or tea with this powder and consume it on daily basis. Start having this tea a week prior to the actual date for delaying the period.

  • The chia craze:

Soak a teaspoon of chia seeds in water overnight. Consume this daily on empty stomach. Start this treatment 4 – 5 days before the actual date to get the desired effect.

  • Good hydration of body:

Drinking at least 8 – 10 glasses of water ensures proper functioning of the body which in turn has a positive impact on your menstrual cycle. Well hydrated body doesn’t get early period. It might not as such delay the cycle but regulate the menstrual cycle. It also avoids complications before or during your period and flushes away the body toxins.

  • Exercise:

Yes!! It does delay periods. Emotional stress is one of the reasons for getting menstrual period before time. This stress can be easily avoided with the help of regular exercise. Exercise releases a hormone known as endorphin. This hormone reduces stress level thereby delays your period.

The exercises which delay the periods are:

  1. Cardio and aerobics for half an hour daily
  2. Muscle stretching
  3. Weightlifting (with proper guidance of a qualified fitness trainer)
  4. Swimming
  5. Cycling


 Points to ponder:

  • Start the treatment 15 days before your period date to ensure effectiveness of remedies. The hormonal changes in the body that causes menstruation start from 14th dayafter the earlier cycle. So, before the hormonal changes start occurring.
  • You might experience severe period cramps, mood swings or hot flashes frequently.
  • The home remedies may not be effective always. Each individual reacts differently to different remedies. Check what suits your body.

With the proper calculation the menstrual cycle and wise selection of food, you can delay the period naturally. Just remember you are going against the nature, there will be some repercussions. Do this only if delaying the period is the last option. Nine tenth of wisdom consists in being wise in time.

    Really! very helpful info for me because after tomorrow I’ve planned a date with my boyfriend. And maybe tomorrow night I’ll have periods… But after reading your article quite happy that I can stop my period for 24 hours…
