13 common mistakes dieters make
So many people go on a diet, only to end up disappointed. Why is the success rate so low, you may ask. After analyzing scores of dieting cases, it was seen that there are some concepts that may be going wrong, leading to disappointment in weight loss.
- Starving during the day and eating only one meal at night: Though this may sound repetitive, it is vital to weight loss and so frequently ignored, that one is forced to remind potential dieters of this.
- Eating sprouts on a day when you are also eating cooked food: The combination of sprouts and regular cooked food is very fattening. If you are eating sprouts, then do not add anything with it. The best time to eat sprouts is before your workout or early in the morning. But when you eat a bowl of sprouts along with your lunch / dinner, then the sprouts will only form gases and will not be that helpful for weight loss. When having sprouts, do not mix it with any other cooked food.
- Drinking juices (very fattening) and coconut water (good for kidney, not so good when trying to knock off flab).
- Eating plenty of ketchup, pickles.
- Eating too many of the diet foods like diet chocolate, diet fizzy drinks, diet cookies (heavy on fat and loaded with aspartame which in high doses also prevents weight loss).
- Eating too many carbs : Often repeated but true because some people with a carb-sensitive profile do not lose weight despite being on a low calorie diet.
- Drinking mega-doses of milk and consuming lot of dairy in the form of curd, paneer, cheese: Too much of dairy makes the elimination system sluggish, a sensible amount of dairy suits some people but not all blood groups.
- Drinking tea/coffee more than 8 cups a day: Creates toxins within the system which stagnates weight loss.
- Drinking soup at night does not suit women as it promotes water retention and increases weight.
- Eating dals at night: Too heavy to digest and stays as calories. And here are a few more:
- A lot of people consider dals as proteins whereas most dals have only 30% protein so their protein content is 1/3 that of egg and dals have 65-70% carbs (so a lot of dals can add to your carbs too).
- Doing fad diets like only vegetables and fruits for 7 days will always lead to rebound weight gain.
- Worrying endlessly: Sounds strange but true, the more you fret about weight loss the less likely it is going to fall, so cheer up, go slow and 1 year of consistent weight loss is far better than a lifetime of dieting!

Hi Madam, I am a 42 year old female, height 5.2, weight 125 lbs. I do workout elliptical 5 days a week for 45 minutes. I do not loose not even a single pound.
My diet:
Morning - warm water 1 cup
Breakfast at 10am or 11am- 2 eggs, 1 cup banana berry smoothie
Lunch- 2 kind of vegetable portals,( mostly green beans and carrot), 1/4 cup millet rice.
Try to drink 7 cups of water. Some days I drink lemon water(or) cinnamon water, (or)apple cider vinegar water (or) green tea.
Dinner- same as lunch.
I am a non vegetarian, I find it hard to loose weight. Any suggestion to change my diet or exercise routine? Recently I started gaining weight. What to do?
Your body must have gotten used to the exercises and walking you do and now adjusts to whatever little calories you are intaking. this happens in a lot of cases where despite all efforts you don't lose a bit. breaking this plateau requires a lot of patience …. here is what you can do …….. exercise wise – stop doing what you are already doing for a week … and then you surprise your body with a new activity ..
for ex – you have been walking all these days, so now change your activity to swimming / Zumba dancing/skating/ gyming / playing badminton or lawn tennis … whatever suits you best. tai chi and kickboxing and pilates work excellently in such cases., I know it's hard to find time and availability of such sports around you .. but if you want to get there .. you need to find harder !!
Diet wise - Change your food pattern and eating timings. for ex . you can change the type of food you eat. if you were eating rotis , you can now change that , and introduce millets , sprouts and rice in your meals , and vice versa . change from eating wheat roti to bajra , jowar etc ... this way the body will take time to adjust to the new routine and will start losing weight again.

Hey!I have lost 12 kgs by gym and lots of upper body inches but lower body inches are not losing ,not from diet not from exercise what to do?
Hi Prerna ,
That too will come down. consistency is the key .. so keep doing , and you will see results soon.
Hi Mam,
This is Lekha. I get very depressed cos of my weight.
I am 5.8 tall and weigh around 75kg :(
90% of the year i m on diet. Every time i m successful in loosing few inches and pounds but unfortunately i gain back those pounds.
I Suffer from PCOD.
Initially around 5 years back i started walking almost 6 to 7 kms a day (not in stretch though). It helped me reduce 8 kgs in span of 2 years.
Post that i started going gym, but here i didn't loose any weight but still body was coming in shape.
Later just 2 backs , i was diagnosed with plantar fasciitis, so i was advised no gym and no walk. Hence i have again put on 2 kgs .
Since gym and walking is restricted, i tried doing diet. But no results :(
Below is my routine, please guide where i can correct
8.00 AM - Wake up & have a glass of water
8.30 AM - 5 to 6 walnuts/ Almonds
10.00 AM - Cup of tea + 3 khakras OR Cup of tea + 2 khakra + handful of gathiya OR cup of tea + 2 khakra + 3 marie biscuits
12.00 PM : Any fruit (Excluding Banana)
1.30 PM : Lunch - 2 bowl of palak toor dal (thick consistency) + 1 small bowl curd or Butter milk
4.00 PM : Any fruit
6.00 PM : Coconut water OR 1 cup tea + 4 marie biscuits
8.00 or 8.30 - Dinner - Moond daal cooked in a little amount of ghee & cumin - 2 bowl -
10.00 PM : If hungry, any fruit OR a glass of milk
Hi Lekha ,
you need to workout . even with planter facitis , there are a ot of exercises that can be done .. if you buy a good quality shoe , you can go for walks in a park or any flat land . along with the walking , you need to do the streching exercises for planter fascia so that it can be cured too. diet wise , all seems ok to me . however , you can still opt out of all the dairies because you have pcod.

Hi Mam,
I eat 2 jowar roti for dinner and very little rice sometimes, but I dont feel quiet full ( I workout in the gym 7-9 in the morning) so is it good if I drink a bowl of Toor dal or any homemade dal or are there any better options?
Height - 5' 11"
Weight 59 Kgs
and can you tell me if my weight is ok or is it too low?
Hi Nirav,
yes your weight is a bit low for your height . you should increase the amount of protein in the mentioned dinner . so if you are a vegetarian , you should increase the protein by intaking soya bean curry , dals , curd , paneer in your dinner.
If you are a non - vegetarian you can include fish , chicken , eggs.
protein will also make you feel full.
