  • The body can auto trigger the damage of liver. This is mainly due to use of cortico-steroids, thus causing hepatitis.

Types of Hepatitis viruses:

  • Hepatitis A virus (HAV):

It spreads via faeces of infected persons. Most often the virus transmits through consumption of contaminated water or food. Hepatitis A infections are mostly mild and a recovery is fast. It doesn’t require any medications. It resolves on its own. People residing in areas with poor sanitation are more prone to this virus. One can receive HAV vaccination to prevent Hepatitis A.

  • Hepatitis B virus (HBV):

It transmits through infective blood, semen or other body fluids. HBV can be transmitted from infected mothers to infants at the time of birth. Blood transfusions with HBV contaminated blood or products or contaminated injections during medical procedures or drug injections are other causes. It is treated with antiviral drugs. There are vaccines available for HBV to prevent hepatitis B.

  • Hepatitis C virus (HCV):

It also transmits mostly through infective blood. Sexual transmission of HCV is rare. There is no vaccine for HCV. It is treated with combinations of antiviral drugs. Chronic hepatitis C causes irreversible scarring of liver tissue or cirrhosis of liver. There is no vaccine for HCV.

  • Hepatitis D virus (HDV):

HDV is secondary infection in people infected with HBV. The combined infection of HDV and HBV is very serious with worse prognosis. There is no vaccine for HDV but it can be prevented by HBV vaccine.

  • Hepatitis E virus (HEV):

Indian Diet Plan For Hepatitis A, B, C, D and E

With progression in liver disorder the patient loses his appetite and has a hard time eating. The individual becomes weak and immunity is compromised. Certain modifications in diet and few tips will resolve any such issues and improve prognosis.

Diet Tips for Hepatitis A, B, C, D and E:

  • Eat a balanced meal:

A high calorie, adequate protein and carbohydrate and a low fat diet is what a hepatitis patient requires.

  • Eat small portions at a time but frequently:

Eat at every 2 or 3 hours intervals. This reduces bloating and nausea sensation and doesn’t reduce our appetite.

  • Eat calorie dense food preparations:

Start with soft food diet and gradually move to normal diet as per patient’s tolerance. As the appetite is compromised, a small portion with high calories like in khichdi or a dal and vegetable soup or porridge with fruit and nuts is advised.

  • Eat whole-grain cereals, breads and millets:

Consume complex carbohydrates in easy to digest forms. It can be like oats porridge or chapatti or daliya or jowar roti or jowar and bajra khichdi. These provide ample carbohydrates to rebuild and repair liver cells and for fast recovery.

  • Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables:

Take care to thoroughly wash and then use. Fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidants. These help to reduce the damage to liver cells, increase immunity and fight infection. The antioxidants also remove all the toxins from the liver thus improving the liver functionality.

  • Get enough good quality protein:

Low fat dairy and products, egg, chicken, fish or soy provide proteins for recovery of liver cells. Hence they should be crucial in Indian diet plan for hepatitis A, B, C, D and E. The calcium from the protein sources also helps to regenerate and repair the liver cells. It also helps to fight infection and increase the immunity.

  • Restrict fried, fatty, oily, salty and extra sugary foods:

Excess fats increase the load on liver function. This will further deteriorate the liver condition. Thus, a moderate intake of healthy fats like nuts, olive oil or groundnut oil or rice bran oil is necessary in Indian diet plan for hepatitis A, B, C, D and E. Instead of fried stuffs you can boil, poach, grill, or cook in a non-stick pan and serve. Excess salt leads to water retention in liver thus damaging the liver. Extra sugar increases the load on liver to store carbohydrates. Thus, avoid excess salt and sugar in the diet.

  • Drink enough fluids as per the doctor’s advice:

If you don’t have  water retention in body, consume as much water as you can to flush out the infection and virus.

Foods to exclude in Indian diet plan for hepatitis A, B, C, D and E:

  • Full-fat dairy products
  • Biscuits, cakes, pies, tarts, chocolates etc with high-fat and sugar content
  • Fatty salad dressings, mayonnaise, sour cream
  • Fatty and fried foods, canned products and ready to eat products
  • Potato chips, vegetables smothered in butter or white/cheese sauces
