Pregnancy brings in a lot of emotions. Everyone you meet has a piece of advice to give you regarding what you should do and what you should eat. This brings in even more confusion. This Indian diet plan for pregnancy will help you clear the air a bit. Here is a sample Indian diet plan for pregnancy which will give you an idea of what food items can be chosen for obtaining optimum nutrition for your baby and yourself.

A woman who starts her pregnancy with a nourished body has a lot of nutrient reserves to supplement the growing fetus. Hence the growth of the fetus is optimized without affecting the women’s health. A well-nourished mother can also lower the risk of post postpartum complications.ย And also aids in better lactation. Hence the items mentioned below should be consumed right from the time you want to start planning your baby.
Smart nutritional choices can help make sure that you and your baby start out with the nutrients that you both need. The key to good nutrition during pregnancy is a balance. Before we see the Indian diet plan for pregnancy let us first look at the foods that I have used in making this Indian diet plan for pregnancy and their nutritional importance during this phase.
Indian Diet Plan for Pregnancy; The Food List
Meat, Poultry, Fish, Eggs, and Nuts
These foods provide protein, iron, and zinc. There is an increased demand for protein during pregnancy particularly in the second half of pregnancy. The normal protein requirement of adult women is 1gm/kg body weight. During pregnancy, it is recommended to have an additional 15 gm/day. The additional protein is essential to meet growing tissue demands.
Milk, Yogurt and Cheese
This group is a major source of protein, calcium, phosphorus, and vitamins. Dairy products are one of the best sources of calcium, and your body needs a lot of it during pregnancy. Eat low-fat dairy products if you are worried about too much weight gain in pregnancy. Cheese, milk, yogurt are excellent foods for pregnancy.
- Fruits
This group provides Important nutrition during pregnancy like vitamins A and C, potassium and fiber. Fruits such as oranges, grapefruit, melons, and berries are the best sources of Vitamin C. It’s easy to eat three or more servings of fruit a day: juice or fresh fruit for breakfast, fresh or dried fruit for a snack, a fruit salad with lunch and a cooked fruit dessert with dinner.
Vegetables

One should have raw, leafy vegetables like spinach (palak) and other vegetables like carrots (gajar), sweet potatoes (shakarkand), corn (Makka), peas (matar) and potatoes. These foods contain vitamins A and C, folate, and minerals such as iron and magnesium. They are also low in fat and contain fiber, which helps to alleviate constipation.
Bread, Cereals, Rice and Pastas
This group provides complex carbohydrates (starches), an important source of energy, in addition to vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Pregnant women need 6 to 11 servings daily from this group. Grain products are also a good source of protein, which is the building material of body tissue for you and your baby. Many grains are enriched with B-vitamins and iron.
Fats, Oils, and Sweets
Use sparingly, since these products contain calories, but few vitamins or minerals. Fats should not make up more than 30 percent of your daily calories. Try to select low-fat foods.
Iron-Rich Foods
many Indian women are anemic (from monthly blood loss, improper diet or previous pregnancies), you may want to fortify your iron levels even before becoming pregnant with such foods as meat, raisins and prunes or beans, soy products and spinach. Your body is better able to absorb iron when consumed with foods rich in vitamin C, such as citrus fruits, potatoes, and broccoli.
Folic Acid
Pregnancy doubles a woman’s need for folate (folic acid or folacin). Research suggests that folic acid supplementation during the weeks leading up to and following conception may help prevent neural tube defects. Foods rich in folic acid include liver, deep green leafy vegetables.
Using the food groups and foodstuff mentioned above, I have compiled them in a one-day Indian diet plan for pregnancy. Let us now see this Indian diet plan for pregnancy. Read – How to Gain less weight during Pregnancyย ย

Hi Ravi ,
she needs to include more veggies in her diet as well as increase 1 glass milk in the evening . does she have any c=acidity ? or any other health issue ?
Hi Payal
My sister is 2 months pregnant. She has feeling of vomiting most of the time. She is taking doxinate G for vomiting. In the morning she wakes up at 6. She has to eat something ASAP otherwise acid reflux problem occurs. She takes very small meals. she needs something to eat after every hour, otherwise lots of acid in form of vomiting come out. Please guide a diet plan for her.
Hi Meenu ,
she can start her day with something sweet like rasgulla , this will keep acids down the entire day . and the above mentioned plan can be followed as food gaps are for 2 hours . if she still feels like eating something in between , she can have apple.
Hi mam me 14 week pregnancy hai but mujhe morning me kuch bhi Nani khaya jata mjhe bhukh jam lagati hai mai kya Karu please answer me

Hai mam, my height is 5’3″ and my weight is 70kg. Now I am 9 week pregnant and my weight is 72 kg. My age is 28yrs. Is it normal? My diet chart: 7.30am: 6 soaked almonds, 8am:one glass milk with mother horlicks and 4 buiskits. 10am: 1glass sattu pani with 8 tsp sattu and one boiled egg. 11am: two banana (4inch) 11.30am: one coconut water. 12.30pm: rice, sabji dal, fish curry. 4.30pm: one apple, one mousambi, 6.00pm: one glass sattu pani with 6 tsp sattu. 8.00pm: one medium size mango or roasted corn. 9.30pm: rice, sabji, fish curry. 11.15pm: one glass milk with mother’s horlicks and 2 buiskits. Is my diet chart right for me? Pls help me. Shall I follow this upto 9months?
Hi ,
rest all is fine , please mind the quantity of food you eat . also make sure you add more fruits and salads at lunch and dinner . eating more is no problem , but all the food you have mentioned are very high calorie , and you might end up gaining unnecessary weight. so eat low cal items in the mid meal times . refer the above mentioned diet plan and foolow something similar , sattu water is ok to take so no worries . dont eat fish every day .. have only 2-3 times a week
Hi Payal,
Thank you very much for great article. Its very informative. I am 9 weeks pregnant and my weight is 144 lbs and my height is 5.4 inches. I have read that lots women gain weight during pregnancy and unable to lose after it. Can you please suggest me how to avoid unnecessary weight gain during pregnancy?
Thanks,
Falak
Hey falak ,
congratulation on entering a new phase in life . yes it the most common thought and a lot of women are actually scared of pregnancy because of the weight factor . there are a few things you need to remember and follow –
1 ] prgnancy doesnt require you to eat double amount of food because you eat for 2 . this is a common misconception . just eat the same amount but make sure you eat healthy items as mentione in the plan . refrain from eating extra fat / ghee / butter . just eat nominal .
2] when you feel hungry , choose healthy foods not high calorie food .
3] be active . try to do the aloowed yoga , and 30 mins walks . do the regular house hold work but dont over stress your self.
hi…mam i am 26 years old, i am 6 week pregnant and iam suffering segmental vitiligo fr 2 years, and My torch 8 test is positive (Hapatitis B) so what I eat or not please give me advice
Hi Minal ,
dont be disheartend and please dont feel low . all you need to do is eat a healthy balanced diet full of antioxidants. basically all fruits and veggies which are fresher and brighter in colour red , yellow, orange and dark green in colour . if you have much vomiting , then make sure you drink plenty of water and fruit juices and broth, if you are a non vegetarian , have chicken broths and soups too. proteins are anywayz good for you as the pregnancy advances your bosy will demand for more proteins , so have handsome amount of protein foods. if you cant eat much at once then divide your food in small feeds every 2 hourly .
Hi Payal,
I am 32 weeks pregnant. I am a vegetarian. I have already gained 12 kg since conception. The last growth scan (taken on 31.4 days) says the baby is already 2.2 kgs. The doctor says the baby is overweight, the head circumference and abdominal circumference of the baby is big (more than 95 percentile) Diabetes was ruled out on last blood test taken in 30th week. My Gynec says I need to have a mandatory check on the diet. Can you please guide me with a diet chart.
Thank you in advance

Hello mam….i have 8 month of pregnancy. Which food I can eat and avoid my 8 and 9 month pregnancy? And my hb level is 10.50 mg/dl I want to increase is more in my last two month of pregnancy.how its possible..
Hi Jyoti ,
you can eat every food in moderation. old wives say that you should avoid hot food like kesar , phapher ka atta and all .. but there is no scientific evidence to it . Also eat pomogranat +beetroot + apple salad every day and this will help you in increasing iron levels . drink palak soup everyday and eat 2 pieces of khajoor and anjeer

Hi Zainab ,
ofcourse green, red , orange and red coloured veggies and fruits are very important for a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. you should definitely not fast during pregnancy. if you can avoid the fasting it will be good for you and your baby. if you still want to fast , please include palak soup , apple instead of banana , carrots and some dry fruits in your food.

Hi Toshi ,
you need to wait for atleast 1 week more . you can perform a home pregnancy test after 7 -8 days from your due menstrual cycle date. sometimes some women show positive test only after 12 – 15 days. once you get a positive home test , you can then go visit a gynecologist.
hi payal
myself asha i am about 86 kgs ,5 “6” height can i conceive with this weight ,is it safe and ,later if i gain weight in pregnancy will that affect the labour process
Hi Asha,
Yes , a lot of women who are your weight or even more do conceive. but i would suggest you to target weight loss for the next 5-6 months , come to arounfd 75 kgs and then plan your pregnancy . not because you can conceive better at this weight but if you do so , you can have more chances of a healthy pregnancy and a normal birthing process. a healthy you will assure a healthy baby . and less difficulties during pregnancy . al the best dear !

Hi…
I m Rekha.. 35 years old… We are planning to conceive our second child in another six months’ time.. I had low breast milk supply for my first child.. Whatever I did didn’t work out… I was wondering whether one can do anything to make sure that they will have enough breast milk after delivery during their pregnancy time.
Also, when is the right time to start exposing your pregnant belly to the sun.. How imp is this ? Please reply
Hi Rekha ,
having a healthy diet and drinking enough water is all you need to be able to produce more milk. herbs like ashwagandha are helpful too. I am writing a blog on foods that increase milk supply , keep reading at dietburrp and youll know about the foods that will help you .
Regarding sun , If you plan to oexpose your belly to sun , for absorption of Vit D , you can do it even every day of your pregnancy, but it has to be in the early hours of morning. literally the rising sun rays. it is not beneficial at any other time of the day.
Hi mam,

Yes there is no problem in having cold milk if it suits you.
Hello
I am 18 weeks pregnant . I am 29 yrs & 68kgs. I can’t have milk.please suggest some alternative source for calcium & what to eat for mid night hunger.is it OK to have omega 3 tablets from now.
Hi Priya ,
yes a lot of gyneacs suggest DHA tabs for omega 3 supplementations . but its wise to take a clean chit from your doctor on the same. for calcium you can choose milk products like curd . paneer, green leafy veggies , ragi , sesame seeds , you can have small fishes that are eaten with bone.

you need more protein in your diet . add curd, 1 more glass milk , some dry fruits . these are helpful in gaining weight . if nausea is too much , please take medicine but eat well.
Hi Payal,
Could you please suggest few vegetarian sources of iron, with their respective quanties for daily consumption. I am 5 months pregnant and have low haemoglobin.
Thank you .
Hi Neha ,
have beetroot , pomogranate and apple salad every morning before breakfast . this has really helped a lot of my clients in replenishing their iron stores. besides this have dry anjeer , and dates , replace sugar in your diet with gurr. cook in iron vessels. if you are a non – vegetarian , consume organ meats. green leafy veggies, poha and roasted channa are good source of iron .
Hi Payal,
I liked your pregnancy diet chart. The only thing that bothers me is the weight gain. I have been trying to loose weight, but now as I am pregnant I have started putting it on again. Could you please recommend any physical exercise during pregnancy to maintain the weight?
Hi Sidu ,
you can do yoga and lamaze under trained instructors . if yoi do not have these facility around you , go for walking 30 mins 2 or 1 time a day epending on your health.
