Indian diet plan for pregnancy

Last Updated on March 29, 2020 | RD, Payal Banka (Registered Dietitian) 730 Comments

Pregnancy brings in a lot of emotions. Everyone you meet has a piece of advice to give you regarding what you should do and what you should eat. This brings in even more confusion. This Indian diet plan for pregnancy will help you clear the air a bit. Here is a sample Indian diet plan for pregnancy which will give you an idea of what food items can be chosen for obtaining optimum nutrition for your baby and yourself.

nutrition during pregnancy

A woman who starts her pregnancy with a nourished body has a lot of nutrient reserves to supplement the growing fetus. Hence the growth of the fetus is optimized without affecting the women’s health. A well-nourished mother can also lower the risk of post postpartum complications.ย  And also aids in better lactation. Hence the items mentioned below should be consumed right from the time you want to start planning your baby.

Smart nutritional choices can help make sure that you and your baby start out with the nutrients that you both need. The key to good nutrition during pregnancy is a balance. Before we see the Indian diet plan for pregnancy let us first look at the foods that I have used in making this Indian diet plan for pregnancy and their nutritional importance during this phase.

Indian Diet Plan for Pregnancy; The Food List

  • Meat, Poultry, Fish, Eggs, and Nuts

These foods provide protein, iron, and zinc. There is an increased demand for protein during pregnancy particularly in the second half of pregnancy. The normal protein requirement of adult women is 1gm/kg body weight. During pregnancy, it is recommended to have an additional 15 gm/day. The additional protein is essential to meet growing tissue demands.

  • Milk, Yogurt and Cheese

This group is a major source of protein, calcium, phosphorus, and vitamins. Dairy products are one of the best sources of calcium, and your body needs a lot of it during pregnancy. Eat low-fat dairy products if you are worried about too much weight gain in pregnancy. Cheese, milk, yogurt are excellent foods for pregnancy.

  • Fruits

This group provides Important nutrition during pregnancy like vitamins A and C, potassium and fiber. Fruits such as oranges, grapefruit, melons, and berries are the best sources of Vitamin C. It’s easy to eat three or more servings of fruit a day: juice or fresh fruit for breakfast, fresh or dried fruit for a snack, a fruit salad with lunch and a cooked fruit dessert with dinner.

  • VegetablesIndian diet plan for pregnancy

One should have raw, leafy vegetables like spinach (palak) and other vegetables like carrots (gajar), sweet potatoes (shakarkand), corn (Makka), peas (matar) and potatoes. These foods contain vitamins A and C, folate, and minerals such as iron and magnesium. They are also low in fat and contain fiber, which helps to alleviate constipation.

  • Bread, Cereals, Rice and Pastas

This group provides complex carbohydrates (starches), an important source of energy, in addition to vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Pregnant women need 6 to 11 servings daily from this group. Grain products are also a good source of protein, which is the building material of body tissue for you and your baby. Many grains are enriched with B-vitamins and iron.

  • Fats, Oils, and Sweets

Use sparingly, since these products contain calories, but few vitamins or minerals. Fats should not make up more than 30 percent of your daily calories. Try to select low-fat foods.

  • Iron-Rich Foods

many Indian women are anemic (from monthly blood loss, improper diet or previous pregnancies), you may want to fortify your iron levels even before becoming pregnant with such foods as meat, raisins and prunes or beans, soy products and spinach. Your body is better able to absorb iron when consumed with foods rich in vitamin C, such as citrus fruits, potatoes, and broccoli.

  • Folic Acid

Pregnancy doubles a woman’s need for folate (folic acid or folacin). Research suggests that folic acid supplementation during the weeks leading up to and following conception may help prevent neural tube defects. Foods rich in folic acid include liver, deep green leafy vegetables.

Using the food groups and foodstuff mentioned above, I have compiled them in a one-day Indian diet plan for pregnancy. Let us now see this Indian diet plan for pregnancy. Read – How to Gain less weight during Pregnancyย ย

    Hi Payal,

Wishing you good health. Just to tell you a quick scenario of my previous pregnancies…I gave to my first child a boy through C-section and he is 2 years now. My second child was a still birth and she was born on 2-March-2016. The reason for death was less weight of the baby. During these two pregnancies i gained lot of weight. At present i weigh 83 Kgs and am 5 ft 3″ tall and suffering from D-generation spondilythesis.
Again I am suspected to be 5 weeks pregnant as the last period i got was on 15th Nov’16 and my next scan is on 4th January to check if there is heartbeat. Can you suggest me a diet plan where i can control my weight and at the same time keep the babies weight maintained and healthy. I am desperate to give birth to my child with safety. Please help me. Thanks

      Hi Anuradha ,

The fetal weight will improve if you eat what i have suggested . basically the notch may be the reason of low fetal weight . because of the notch the blood supply to th fetus is less, and hence all the required nutritio may not be reaching the fetus . it is a common problem , and many women have this . if your doctor has not commented about the type of notch or the soze of notch , then it is normal to have less fetal weight , it will get better towards the end of 8th month and in 9th month.

it is a physical issue , you cnt do anything about it . just eat healthy nutritious food , so that whatever is reaching to the fetus will be sufficient for its growth,

      Hi Meet ,

dont worry so much , many women who have thyroid , have a healthy pregnancy and they all deliver healthy babies . your diet seems right . if you need to maintain a 45 mins gap in food and thyroid meds , you can wake up an hour early , pop th pills and go back to sleep . then wake up after an hour and eat :P

      Hi Kanwal ,

well eggs and milk are necessary as they will only help in proper growth of fetus .. so plz start back with milk . instead of having roti all the time , have phulka , and instead fof fried eggs in the morning , have boiled eggs or bhurji . avoid cashew , eat almonds instead. rest looks ok.

do you know the reason behind itching ? it will be wrong if i randomly give you some remedies , skin itch all over the body can be suggestive of some skin disease . it can also be because of dryness. if dryness is the reason then mix glycerine and rose water an apply all over the body every night before sleeping , the skin will become soft and moisturized

      Hi Danishta ,

thinking about weight loss while pregnant is a big mistake . but ypou can still take care to not put on excess weight by eating only healthy food and eat in a quantity that fills you up but doesnt stuff you till throat . eat less and more number of times. walk for 20 mins 1 or 2 times a day .

yes tea and cofee both have tannins and caffeine which interupt with nutrient absorption . try to get rid of the habot . if you cant , start having light coffee and reduce the quantity of tea . try to take other drinks at those times , like milk with flavours , this will help you over come your cravings

      Hi ,

the diet seems good .. increase 1 glass milk early in the morning … , what does your scan say ? you dont need to worry about your weight if your scan reports says that your fetus size and weight are normal .. some babies are tiny when in womb .. so dont compare with any other … are you facing any specific health issue ? if yes , then i will help you with that … but your diet is good .. so no worries ..

    Hi Payal,

My wife is 10 weeks pregnant now and till now I was not aware of meal plan during pregnancy. I have read this blog and found very helpful and I will start making a good meal plan referring to your guidelines, Thanks for this.

I have one question to be ask, we just did a ANC profile test and found that her RBC’s count and Haemoglobin level is below the normal range, Can you please suggest me what needs to be added in her diet (in detail) to improve and cover the deficiency?

    Thanking you.

      Hi Mandar ,

thank you . Dont worry , just add a beetroot , chopped apple and pomogranate salad to her diet routine , 2 times a day .. (mix all 3 fruits together ). this alone will be helpful in getting her levels back . and apart from this , im sure she must be taking her calcium and iron tabs .. so that will be taken care of .

    Hi Payal,

I am 18 week pregnant and I am a strict vegetarian(no eggs and no meat).During my whole 3rd month I was suffering with severe dry cough and still my cough is not gone completely. So I am not taking milk and yoghurt that regularly as it increases the mucus. But I am taking a healthy diet otherwise. Can you please suggest how can I cover up for my calcium needs when there is cough.

    Few more questions below:

Are Chia seeds and linseeds safe to eat during pregnancy.
I also heard that trifala powder is very good..can we eat trifala in pregnancy?

    Thanks in advance

      Hi Swetha ,

dont worry dear .. a lot of women do not get any cravings at all during the entire pregnancy and its absolutely normal . eat when you feel hungry and eat what you are comfortable with . as long as your scans tell that the baby’s growth is good , you o not really need to increase the quantity of food. there is nothing like eating for 2 . its only about eating good and healthy foods to be able to provide all the needed nutrients for the growth of baby

      i priya ,

if you are not overweight , and your baby is in normal weight you can have ghee . there is a myth that eating ghee helps in smooth normal delivery as if the ghee will make the tract more slippery .. but there is nothing of that sort . the only scientific relevance is that ghee carries Vit D which helps in stronger pelvic and other bones. so support the lady in the long run .
