Indian diet plan for pregnancy

Last Updated on March 29, 2020 | RD, Payal Banka (Registered Dietitian) 730 Comments

Pregnancy brings in a lot of emotions. Everyone you meet has a piece of advice to give you regarding what you should do and what you should eat. This brings in even more confusion. This Indian diet plan for pregnancy will help you clear the air a bit. Here is a sample Indian diet plan for pregnancy which will give you an idea of what food items can be chosen for obtaining optimum nutrition for your baby and yourself.

nutrition during pregnancy

A woman who starts her pregnancy with a nourished body has a lot of nutrient reserves to supplement the growing fetus. Hence the growth of the fetus is optimized without affecting the women’s health. A well-nourished mother can also lower the risk of post postpartum complications.  And also aids in better lactation. Hence the items mentioned below should be consumed right from the time you want to start planning your baby.

Smart nutritional choices can help make sure that you and your baby start out with the nutrients that you both need. The key to good nutrition during pregnancy is a balance. Before we see the Indian diet plan for pregnancy let us first look at the foods that I have used in making this Indian diet plan for pregnancy and their nutritional importance during this phase.

Indian Diet Plan for Pregnancy; The Food List

  • Meat, Poultry, Fish, Eggs, and Nuts

These foods provide protein, iron, and zinc. There is an increased demand for protein during pregnancy particularly in the second half of pregnancy. The normal protein requirement of adult women is 1gm/kg body weight. During pregnancy, it is recommended to have an additional 15 gm/day. The additional protein is essential to meet growing tissue demands.

  • Milk, Yogurt and Cheese

This group is a major source of protein, calcium, phosphorus, and vitamins. Dairy products are one of the best sources of calcium, and your body needs a lot of it during pregnancy. Eat low-fat dairy products if you are worried about too much weight gain in pregnancy. Cheese, milk, yogurt are excellent foods for pregnancy.

  • Fruits

This group provides Important nutrition during pregnancy like vitamins A and C, potassium and fiber. Fruits such as oranges, grapefruit, melons, and berries are the best sources of Vitamin C. It’s easy to eat three or more servings of fruit a day: juice or fresh fruit for breakfast, fresh or dried fruit for a snack, a fruit salad with lunch and a cooked fruit dessert with dinner.

  • VegetablesIndian diet plan for pregnancy

One should have raw, leafy vegetables like spinach (palak) and other vegetables like carrots (gajar), sweet potatoes (shakarkand), corn (Makka), peas (matar) and potatoes. These foods contain vitamins A and C, folate, and minerals such as iron and magnesium. They are also low in fat and contain fiber, which helps to alleviate constipation.

  • Bread, Cereals, Rice and Pastas

This group provides complex carbohydrates (starches), an important source of energy, in addition to vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Pregnant women need 6 to 11 servings daily from this group. Grain products are also a good source of protein, which is the building material of body tissue for you and your baby. Many grains are enriched with B-vitamins and iron.

  • Fats, Oils, and Sweets

Use sparingly, since these products contain calories, but few vitamins or minerals. Fats should not make up more than 30 percent of your daily calories. Try to select low-fat foods.

  • Iron-Rich Foods

many Indian women are anemic (from monthly blood loss, improper diet or previous pregnancies), you may want to fortify your iron levels even before becoming pregnant with such foods as meat, raisins and prunes or beans, soy products and spinach. Your body is better able to absorb iron when consumed with foods rich in vitamin C, such as citrus fruits, potatoes, and broccoli.

  • Folic Acid

Pregnancy doubles a woman’s need for folate (folic acid or folacin). Research suggests that folic acid supplementation during the weeks leading up to and following conception may help prevent neural tube defects. Foods rich in folic acid include liver, deep green leafy vegetables.

Using the food groups and foodstuff mentioned above, I have compiled them in a one-day Indian diet plan for pregnancy. Let us now see this Indian diet plan for pregnancy. Read – How to Gain less weight during Pregnancy

    Dear Payal,

I read all the posts in this forum and got really impressed by your patience to answer to the questions. I’m also in the same boat like others but instead my weight has always been low. Now that I’m pregnant, I have lost 2 kgs in first trimester. I’m currently 51 kgs with a height of 5’0. I’m unable to eat any food, even drinking plenty of water is a problem to me. As I’m working with 12 hours office timings, there are not enough ways to eat nutritious food. I had a miscarriage two years back and perhaps because of this, my doctor has told me to eat only veg and no fruits. Not even an egg. I’m completely confused on what to eat that can fulfill my body requirements and is good with vomiting and nausea.
    Please reply.

      Hi Ananya ,

there is nothing of the sort . you can take milk 3 glasses in a day .. Your hb is too low to get corrected with diet .. im sure you must be on medication for iron . just dont take the pills with milk .

you can add 1 chopped apple in chopped beetroot and 1 pomogranate , and finish this fruit mix in a day (at once is also ok , or divide in 2 portion and have in some time gap ) this will help you loads in increasing HB

      Hi Meeti ,

you basically need to eat food that will help in softer motion so that it doesnt hurt you much … liquidsare preffered . have a glass of milk with 1 sp ghee at night so that the next day you get softer motion you can also add isabghol to your milk at night for softer motion .. i cant help you with the pain … just avoid too spicy , fried or too oily things . make sure you eat soft fiber and not roughage . like peels of fruits wil make the stool hard , have boiled and pureed veggies like spinach

      Hi Pradnya ,

sorry but the question is incomplete for me to understand .. do you mean you want to conceive at this weight ? or if you are already pregnant , then the weight factor depends on how much you gained since the pregnancy and which wee of pregnancy are you in .

      Hi Swarna ,

dnt worry , be strong and mark the things that you like eating and that suit your body … try to eat these things more. and avoid the food that are difficult for your body to digest . drink pleanty water and maintain a healthy and active lifestyle . i know you feel weak , but trust me mental strength can make you pass this phase soon.

    Hi,

I am 5 weeks pregnant. I found your chart very helpful and trying to incorporate the same. This is my first pregnancy so curious about few things

    1. I it okay to have packaged milk like Amul in pregnancy? We dnt have much option of dairy milk and also i feel hard to trust the local dairy. Kindly enlighten.
    2. As my first trimester falls during summer time , Is is safe to start Kesar and Dates in first trimester?
    3. Can i use Patanjali Gulkand to prepare rose milk in the Morning time ??

1] yes you can have it . usually all packaged milk are pasturized and hence free from any virus and bacteria and micro organism that dwell on the animals body part and hence transfered to milk . local dairy milk can carry these .

2] scientifically there is no issue , but naturopathy wont suggest this … you can start having this after completing 12 weeks . specially if you live in a very hot region . (however , i doubt f there is any place in india thats not hot at the moment 😛 )

      3] yes you can .

diet is ok , excet long gap in evening .. add 2 small meals ..1 after lunch around 3 , which can be buttermilk , and one around 7 , which can again be soups or milk .

wy are you taking exosprin ? do you have hyoertention ? or is it for a notch in the uterine arteries ? if the later is the reason , the low fetal weight can be attributed to thqt as well.

      Hi Meeti ,

Dont worry , it is a physiologic issue , and there is little we can do with diet . all we can do is keep a watch at your blood pressure , as the nitch may cause back flow of blood causing your blood pressure to be unstable so watch your salt intake . you can foillow the above mentioned balanced diet chart . it give all needed nutrients in appropriate amount. if you et very nauseated eat little .

    Hi Payal,

I just got my 1st FET done (on 9th Feb) and first beta HCG count was on the lower side (30). The second time beta HCG almost doubled (at c50). I am scheduled for another beta hcg in a week. 6 yrs of marriage. TTC- 3+ yrs and a history of 1 MC. I am nearing 31, weight 73kgs (PCOS). Have been regularly exercising from past few years to keep the weight in check.
Is there any thing in particular I must eat/do that can help me a healthy preg? I really want my HCG to be what it should be when the tests are scheduled!

*Panicked* is an underrated word on what I feel every moment- Please advise

    Hi Payal

I am presently 24 weeks pregnant . I am a south indian pure vegetarian. During my previous prenatal visit, my Dr said my baby is measuring less for its actual fetal age. She has put me on a protein supplement ‘Aminogen’. However, this medication causes a lot of constipation and cramping. So i have chosen to discontinue. Below is my diet plan. Can you please advise how I can include more of proteins :

    1. Early morning – 1 glass of fresh cow milk with Mother’s horlicks , a banana or any other fruit and handful of mixed nuts (almonds, raisins, blueberry , flax seeds , walnuts , pista etc)

    2. Breakfast – regular south indian tiffin (dosa/ upma (with veggies) / poha ) or veg sandwich. 2 glasses of fresh juice or smoothie without any added sugar.

    3. Pre lunch snack – 1 serving of any fruit of my choice (apple/orange/pomegranate etc)

    4. Lunch – Rice with sambaar , rasam and curd rice. Along with 2 servings of vegetables and I try to include greens (or keerai) everyday.

    5. evening snack – 2 servings of fresh veg salad with pulses (moong sprouts / chick peas / black eyed beans etc)

    6. pre dinner meal – 1 sandwich (whole wheat bread and veggies) or 2 dosas or 1 glass of milk with cereal.

    7. Dinner – regular south indian tiffin (idli/ dosa / upma etc)

    8. Bed time – 1 glass of cow milk . Sometimes 1 fruit like (banana or apple).

      hi ,

Include soaked almonds 10 in the morning and 10 at bed time . increase 1 glass of milk in the evening. you can try ensure protein powder , it will not cause constipation .

at bed time , eat 2 anjeer , 2 dates and 10 soaked almonds as mentioned above and 8-10 cashew nuts. this will help in increasing the fetal weight.

evening and morning fruits start habing a mix of apple , beetroot and pomogranate , this will support pregnancy , and take care of fetal development along with fulifilling your iron requirements.

I’m 10 weeks pregnant now. I have been taking medication (Thyronorm/Electroxin – 25mcg) for hypothyroidism for almost 8 years. The hormone levels have been under control since then. Can I take peanuts during my pregnancy? Will a small handful or a piece of Chikki daily hurt? I used to take peanuts before my pregnancy; never noticed any issues then. Pls advice.

Also, below is my diet as of now. Pls do tell if it’s sufficient.

7am (half an hour after Electroxin) – 1 Cup milk, 1 wheat rusk
9am – 2/3 Multigrains Roti with dal, moong or channa
    11 30am – Apple, orange
1 30pm – Rice with subzi and dal, moong dal or chole
    4pm – 10 Peanuts, 4 cashew nuts, 4 pistachios, 3 dates, 2 walnuts and half a bowl Pomegranate / 10 black raisins
    6pm – Milk with Women’s Horlicks
9pm – 2/3 Multigrains Roti with Sabzi and dal
    By 10 30, I go to sleep.

    Hi Payal,

This is Mukta here and i need your urgent help. Last year December,i had undergone fibroid surgery. It was size of a wallnut. Post 6 months,i conceived. I am in 29th week of my pregnancy. Age:32,Baby-First,Height:5.7″,Wgt: 63 now..Before conception,i was underweight 53-55kgs.

My concern is : I had an ultrasound yesterday and my gynae told me my baby growth is on the threshold of expected wgt which means not good. Its barely 1.1kg.which she said is very less and second, blood flow to the baby is high resistant. I am thin n tall girl and the baby happened to us after a long treatment..however i conceived naturally.

    Medicines am taking-
    Thyronorm 25mg.morning
    MHR-1 morning,after breakfasr
    Ecospirin-75mg-1,after lunch
    Supracal-1 after dinner
Susten 400mg-vaginally at night before bed.

    My Diet:
Breakfast-8:30AM-6 soaked almonds, 2 stuff paranthas(cauliflower, reddish, potato, any) with 1 cup of tea or Milk(depends upon my mood).

    10:30-Mixed fruit bowl,1 Guava,1 Banana
11:30- One cup tea (milk is more).
1:00-Lunch-3/4 chapatis with light ghee on it,subzi or daal. or 2 times in a week-Rice
    3:00- 1 fruit(any)
4:00- One cup tea with 2 suji rusk or 2 marigold biscuits
    6:30- Sprouts/Poha 1 bowl/some namkeen/besan rawa puda
    8:00/8:30-Dinner-2/3 chapatis with 1 cup of daal tadka/plain with 1 dry subzi(spinach saag,pumpkin,beans any),some cucumber reddish salad.
10:30-One glass of milk with Pro-PL.
Note: I eat 2-4 Anjeer anytime in a day. Also,i take 4 dates in a day anytime.

My question to you- Could you please correct me where am i lacking in providing all the nutrients to my baby. My doc.advised me to eat more Protein for good baby growth and development.

Sorry for this lengthy mail request. Please suggest me how to improve my diet so that i also gain good weight and blood circulation to the baby goes well plus the requied nutrients.

    Awaiting anxiously for your reply!

Thank you so much in advance!

      Hi Mukta ,

Is this high resistance blood flow to fetus owing to a notch in your arteries ? if yes , then the growth of the fetus gets limited due to ess blood supply . dont worry it should get ok . i have had several clients with the same issues but all of them get better by 8th month . and you are alreADY on ecospirin which should help.

your diet seems ok , just add a little more dry fruits with your glass of milk at bed time . eat cashewnut and anjeer and dried apricots , they will help in increasing the fetal weight .

      Hi Saranya ,

susten will help you sustain the pregnancy . the duration of the pill depends on the cause of spotting . hence your doctor is the best person to decide it .

Your diet looks ok for now , just eat a lot of greens , carrots and protein items like milk and curd . if non vegetarian , then eat some of those protein sources
