Chocolate Cysts Symptoms, Causes, Treatment, and Diet Plan with Indian Menu

At times there is the excess collection and growth of menstrual blood inside the uterus forming a big ball-like structure. It can sometimes block the uterus walls. This condition is known as chocolate cysts.

What is a chocolate cyst?

Chocolate cysts occur in females who already suffer from endometriosis. It is a blood-filled ball that is dark in color hence; it is named a chocolate cyst. This cyst consists of old menstrual blood, endometrial tissues, and inflammatory enzymes. Mostly chocolate cyst is non-symptomatic but you can find few symptoms in females. An ultrasound or a biopsy is required to detect a chocolate cyst.

Symptoms of Chocolate cyst

  • Painful periods and severe cramps
  • Heavy bleeding
  • Pain in the abdomen even after menstruation
  • Regular bouts of indigestion
  • Irregular periods
  • Pain during sex
  • Infertility

Causes of Chocolate Cysts

It is observed, that if you are suffering from endometriosis, there is a lot of endometrial waste collected in the uterus. This waste has to be pushed out of the uterus during menstruation. But instead, the waste is pushed reversely in the direction of the fallopian tubes. This waste ball then gets stuck in the uterus and grows in size with time. It can block the uterus and tubes causing irregular periods, difficulty in the release of egg in the uterus, and difficulty in embryo attaching to the uterus. This is the major reason for infertility. Long-standing PCOS can also lead to chocolate cysts.

Treatment of Chocolate Cyst

  • In mild discomfort and a small cyst, doctors prescribe birth control pills to manage the pain and ovulation.
  • Surgery is recommended in case of excess pain, big size of the cyst (bigger than 4 cm), and if you are planning to conceive.
  • Pregnancy after the surgery reduces the reoccurrence of chocolate cysts.

  • Strength training or ab workout help to strengthen the uterine walls, it makes menstruation easy and reduces the pain. Minimum 2 days a week, you should perform resistance training or strength training.
  • Yoga: Yoga is a very helpful workout technique that works on your body inside out. Few asanas help to activate the pituitary gland that secretes hormones.
