What is IUI?

IUI is intrauterine insemination. IUI is a fertility treatment in which the semen from male partner is transferred into the female partner’s uterus. It is done with the help of a thin catheter. This procedure is done during ovulation. However, It can be during natural ovulation cycle or or during drug induced ovulation.

Who can opt for IUI?

  • Women with endometriosis or PCOS
  • Women with ovulatory dysfunction
  • Females with cervical issues
  • Male partner with erectile dysfunction
  • Male partner with ejaculation malfunction

Before IUI Procedure: 

IUI Process requires some pre-preparations. Healthier the body, better are the chances of fertility success. It is a process where the couple undergoes the procedure together. There are series of changes that you need to implement to get pregnant.

  • Consult a Professional:

The very first step is to consult a certified professional. They help in identifying the root cause of infertility and hence, helping you choose the most suitable procedure for fertility. In some cases, IVF remains the only option. Hence, it is important to understand the physiology.

 

  • Manage Endometriosis and PCOS:

  • Maintain Healthy Weight:

Obesity is one of the causes of infertility, not just in females but in males as well. Obesity leads to metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance and hormonal abnormality. Aiming for weight loss will solve these issues and help to conceive better. Following a healthy diet routine along with regular exercises will give amazing results.

  • De-stress your body:

Managing your stress enhances IUI procedure as well as gives better results. Engage in some hobbies, perform yoga, meditation or do whatever interest you keep you away from stress.

  • Healthy sleep pattern:

Sound sleep helps in enhancing the fertility treatment, keeps stress away, maintain hormonal balance and help in weight management.

  • Exercise:

Exercise helps in managing weight, de-stressing, releases hormones that maintain your fertility as well as it also makes the egg or sperm healthy. Indulge into cardio workouts like walks, swimming, cycling, yoga, dance routines or home cardio workouts.

IUI Diet Chart ( Indian Diet Plan for IUI )

An IUI diet chart looks similar to a balanced diet plan with plenty of nutrients spread appropriatly through out the day. This Indian diet plan for IUI not only provides nutrition, but also looks into increasing fertility. Hence, ensuring positive results of the procedure.

Foods to Include in the IUI Diet:

  • Carbohydrates:

Include complex carbohydrates with low GI in your diet. It prevents sugar spike and manages blood sugar level, prevents insulin resistance as well as it helps in weight loss. Consume whole grain cereals, millets, oats, quinoa or broken wheat in your daily diet.

  • Protein:

Proteins are vital part of hormone system. Good quality protein maintains hormonal balance and promotes ovulation and sperm production. It also promotes fertilization and implantation. Include pulses, sprouts, low fat milk and products, poultry and fish. Beans and legumes are rich in fiber as well as folic acid that is required in conceiving. Egg yolks are nutritionally complete foods. They contain iron, calcium, zinc, vitamin B6, folate and vitamin B 12.

  • Dairy:

Opt for homogenised pasteurised milk as per requirement. A high low fat milk and products consumption might hinder IUI procedure. Up to 2 servings of milk and its products are sufficient for the daily requirements. Low fat curd boosts semen quality. On the other hand, Cheddar and parmesan cheese improves the sperm quality.

  • Fruits and Vegetables:

Fruits and vegetables are loaded with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory components. Different fruits have different nutrients that help ovulation, enhance egg and sperm quality, promote egg production and balance hormone levels.

    • Green leafy vegetables: These vegetable have folic acid that help fertility. They are rich in iron that maintains blood haemoglobin levels during IUI treatment.
    • Watermelon and asparagus: Watermelon and asparagus are high in glutathione that enhances egg quality. The high fiber, water and low calories promotes weight loss. Asparagus has high vitamin K, folate, vitamin A, C and B which are all that are necessary for conceiving.
    • Kale: Kale maintains the oestrogen metabolism.
    • Tomatoes:  Lycopene in tomatoes boosts fertility in males. Cooked tomatoes contain more lycopene than the raw ones.
    • Pomegranate: The antioxidants in pomegranate improve the sperm and egg quality.
    • Beet: Beet improves iron levels in the body, increase blood flow to uterus and help in implantation of the fertilized egg.

 

  • Fats:

Healthy fats in moderation help in hormonal balance. It helps in ovulation and implantation. Omega 3 rich fats help reduce inflammation, reduce oxidative stress as well as they also help in healthy weight loss. Include olive oil, nuts, avocados, flaxseeds and fish. Consuming avocados have shown a high success rate in IUI treatment.

  • Nuts and seeds:

    • Sunflower Seeds: The vitamin E content of sunflower seeds increases sperm count and motility. The folate and selenium boosts IUI procedure.
    • Walnut: Walnuts are a very rich source of omega-3 fatty acids. This promotes fertility.
  • Cinnamon:

Cinnamon regulates female hormones and triggers ovulation in females with PCOS.

Foods to Avoid in the IUI Diet:

  • Avoid junk food: Junk food is high in trans fats, refined flour, sugar as well as saturated fats. It worsens the insulin resistance in PCOS, imbalances blood sugars, leads to weight gain and thus hinder IUI process.
  • Caffeine: Drink coffee and tea in moderation. Excess coffee might lead to dehydration affecting the uterine lining. This can make implantation little difficult.
  • Soy: Soy has phytoestrogens that mimic the oestrogen present in the body. It might hinder with IUI process.
  • Avoid Drinking and smoking: Drinking and smoking might lead to some birth defect in the foetus or female undergoing IUI treatment. Alcohol might also cause dehydration and hence affects the quality of sperm and egg.

IUI Diet Chart ( Indian Diet Plan for IUI )

Here is a 1 full day sample of IUI diet chart ( Indian diet plan for IUI ). This diet plan includes all the foods as well as tips discussed above in the article.

Sample Indian Diet Plan for IUI

Empty stomach: 1 glass Kale beetroot apple juice with flaxseeds.

Breakfast: 1 cup Oats Porridge with dates, walnuts and almonds Or Daliya upama with vegetable + 1 cup curd.

Mid-morning: Devilled avocado (filling – chia seeds, curd and honey dip) or any other fruit (100 – 150 gms).

Lunch: 1 cup Salad + 2 small Millet roti + 1 cup Vegetable + 1 cup Sprouts chat.

Mid Afternoon: 1 glass buttermilk.

Snacks: 1 cup green tea or cinnamon tea + 2 small vegetable moongdal pancakes or sweet potato dudhi chilla with green chutney.

Dinner: 1 cup Boiled quinoa or Daliya + 1 cup stir fried vegetables + 1 cup Sambar.

Bed time: 1 glass Vegetable juice (unstrained and no fruits).

A clean healthy eating helps to maintain weight, keeps you fit and also boosts IUI procedure. A regular exercise routine along with sound sleep, as well as managing stress will make this IUI process easy. Always consult a professional before following any diet or supplements.     On the first day we should start our diet plan with moments, we can include as much fruit as possible in our diet plan on the first day, mainly watermelon and melon are highly recommended because they contain sufficient amount of fiber are there.

    Along with this diet plan, we should drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water a day. Whenever we feel hungry, we should not be hungry, we should consume some fruits.
