The liver is the second largest organ in the body. The liver processes everything we eat or drink. It also filters any harmful substances from the blood. The liver has the ability to repair itself by rebuilding new liver cells when the old ones are damaged. But with repeated damage, the liver gets scarred.

It is normal to have fat around the liver. But, with excess deposition of fats, the normal process of the liver is hampered. Excess fat on the liver is a known as fatty liver.

Causes of Fatty Liver:

  • Dyslipidaemia: High fat levels in blood indicate high-fat deposition around liver.
  • Uncontrolled diabetes: High sugars increase triglycerides, which get deposited around the liver for storage.
  • Genetic inheritance
  • Side effect of medications:ย Fatty Liver can also be a cause ofย  side effects of certain medications.
  • Alcohol: Overconsumption of alcohol hinders the normal liver function. Excess alcohol leads to major fat deposition around the liver. Slowly it damages the liver cells and leads to alcoholic fatty liver.

Symptoms of fatty liver:

Indian diet plan for fatty liver

Generally, fatty liver is asymptomatic. But with repeated episodes, there can be permanent damage to the liver.

With mild fatty liver, you may experience
  • Fatigue
  • Mild abdominal discomfort
  • Enlarged liver
Fatty liver with inflammation may cause:
  • Poor appetite resulting in weight loss
  • Abdominal pain
  • Weakness and fatigue
  • Confusion

How do you improve a fatty liver?

  • Avoid alcoholic beverages: Gradually reduce the amount and stop consuming alcohol.
  • Limit intake of sugary and fatty foods
  • Manage your cholesterol
  • Manage your blood sugar
  • Lose weight
  • Indulge in a physical exercise
  • Modify the dietary pattern

There is no medication or surgery to treat fatty liver. Instead, we can either prevent the progress or reverse the risk factors by following theย  below mentioned Indian diet plan for fatty liver and by following the tips mentioned above.

Indian Diet Plan For Fatty Liver –

What foods to eat to cure fatty liver?

Here are a few foods to include in your healthy liver diet:

  • Fish:

Fish like salmon, sardines, tuna and trout are high in omega 3. Omega 3 improves liver fat cells and also reduces inflammation in liver. Fishes with appropriate cooking methods like steaming, grilling or barbecue will give desired effects.

  • Olive oil:

Olive oil is rich in MUFA and omega 3. It is a healthier option for oil compared to other oils available on the market. In controlled amounts, it will prevent further damage.

  • Raw garlic:

The antioxidants in garlic help break down fat thus, reducing the fat build up around the liver.

  • Coffee:

Studies show caffeine in coffee lowers the abnormal liver enzymes. It also helps regularise insulin action and fat deposition. Consuming a light coffee will not harm the liver.

What foods to avoid in a fatty liver?

  • Sugar containing foods:

The unwanted sugar in the body gets converted into fats known as triglycerides. Excess triglycerides get stored in the body and liver being the main storage organ gets affected. Avoid chocolate, ice-creams, desserts, etc.

  • Foods made of refined flour:

White bread, rice, and pasta are very high in glycaemic index. It raises the blood sugar immediately. Avoid bakery products, Indian sweets, refined flour tortillas, etc.

  • Junk and fried foods:

Junk and fried foods are very high in saturated fats. Overconsumption of junk leads to high cholesterol in the body. Avoid all processed foods, pizza, burgers, and fries, ready to eat products, chips. Fried snacks โ€“ such as potato chips, tortilla chips, pretzels, crackers, etc. Fried foods are high in fat and calories.

  • Alcohol:

Alcohol is a major cause of fatty liver disease. It damages the liver most.

weight loss helps. Liver is one organ which has the ability to regenrate new cells and improve its functioning. so this will be easy with weight loss and good diet. but if you do a blood test you will know a comparitive study of current situation. it hard to guess based on weight loss.

Hi Manish , because you live in the hostel , its best to eat what is available in non- oily form . like rice and dal , roti and green sabji , buy fruits and keep with you , to eat when hungry . because at your age most kids end up eating fryies and bhajiya and samosa , and other fried items . so you must invest that money in eating fresh fruits and salads. include 1 st clas proteins in your diet like eggs , milk and curd . if you are over weight , then workout for 45 mins or more , or if you are in your right weight then workut for 30 mins is enough.

WHat has the doctor said ? isi it due to malfunctioning of liver ? or did he say it was due to diet ? does anybody in your family have this ? or any metabolic disorder related to liver ? once you know the causitive factor, you can easily handle the issue. you can choose the same menu for him , but make sure he has enough quantity of food .as his requirement of calories will differ.

    Hi,
Thanks for the diet chart. I have a few questions regarding the fatty lever-grade1.

    1. My doctor said to avoid dairy products- so like any dairy product like milk, yogurt, lassi, paneer, ice-cream should be avoided? or, it is sufficient if only high-fat dairy products are avoided?

    2. Being a non-vegetarian, can I include chicken/fish in the diet plan in moderate quantity? We don’t consume red meat anyway. So, should we avoid chicken and fish also?

    3. Should we take eggs on moderate quantity (1 per day) or should we avoid eggs in case of fatty lever?

    4. Is there any particular vegetable that we should avoid for fatty lever?

    5. What about homemade rotis, should I cut down daily consumption of max 6 rotis (2 breakfast, 2 lunch, 2 dinner) too, or it is allowed?

    6. I was reading tea is beneficial for reversing fatty lever condition. Is it true? Can tea with milk be taken (daily total intake 4-5 cups) in case of fatty lever?

If you can answer my queries, it will be highly helpful.

    Thanks,
    Anshu

      Hi Anshu ,

Diet choices in fatty liver depend a lot on your age , weight and other medical issues … You havent mentioned any here , so im giving you general answers ..

Please find my replies below –

      1. My doctor said to avoid dairy products- so like any dairy product like milk, yogurt, lassi, paneer, ice-cream should be avoided? or, it is sufficient if only high-fat dairy products are avoided?

      – In Grade 1 , you dont need to restrict proteins .. just stop the high fat dairy . just avoid full fat milk, icecreams , cream and switch to low fat milk and yogurt.

      2. Being a non-vegetarian, can I include chicken/fish in the diet plan in moderate quantity? We donโ€™t consume red meat anyway. So, should we avoid chicken and fish also?

      – Fish is actually good and will help you … just make sure you have grilled ones .. avoid any preparation that includes fat in form …

      3. Should we take eggs on moderate quantity (1 per day) or should we avoid eggs in case of fatty lever?
      – Yes you can have 1 egg white every day .

      4. Is there any particular vegetable that we should avoid for fatty lever?
      – None actually .. nothing directly related with fatty liver … however , the cooking style is important .. avoid fat ..

      5. What about homemade rotis, should I cut down daily consumption of max 6 rotis (2 breakfast, 2 lunch, 2 dinner) too, or it is allowed?
      – its better to have lighter meals .. go for 3-4 roti , with less or no fat ..

      6. I was reading tea is beneficial for reversing fatty lever condition. Is it true? Can tea with milk be taken (daily total intake 4-5 cups) in case of fatty lever?
      – are you in a habit of drinking tea ? if nit , dont start taking tea … just have green tea .

      Hi Jayanti ,

fatty liver grade 3 is a serious condition , and the seriousness depends on a lot of factor , just labeling it as grade 3 will no reveal the actual state , no one but your doctor can tell you after seeing the sonography reports about how bad it is and how is the prognosis. but , making dietary changes , and getting off alcohol , if you are in to it will definitely make you feel much much much better .

      Hi Akshay ,

Thank you so much for reading at dietburrp . we are really glad that you like our work . Well it depends on what grade of fatty liver a person has . and the symptoms of that person. milk and fruits are fine to take in any level . intake of salad will depend on the persons symptom . Fatty liver is mostly about avoiding fat in the diet , and eating easily digestible foods so that the liver is not affected.

      Hi Sri ,

if you have fatty liver , you will not be able to metabolize the fat properly , which will cause unwanted stress on liver , so instead of this problem being corrected , it will worsen . you can dollow this diet plan first and then may be later you can follow keto
