Polycystic ovarian disease (PCOD) has a constellation of symptoms. Therefore, it is also known as a polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Don’t get depressed, there is always a solution to every problem. Before you understand some tips on diet for PCOS, let’s first take a look at what it’s all about.
What is PCOD?
As the name suggests, the primary characteristics of this syndrome is the presence of numerous cysts in the ovary. This is caused by an imbalance in the hormone, due to excess production of androgen, although scientists are not very clear why this happens. Women who have PCOD normally have high levels of insulin in their blood. The right diet for PCOS is thus very important.
What are the symptoms of PCOD?
The symptoms of PCOD are variedย in different women and often is based on the severity of the condition. As androgen is typically a male hormone, many women develop some male characteristics in advanced stages of PCOD such as hirsutism (increased hair growth in the chest, back, fingers, toes, etc.) and male pattern baldness. Other symptoms associated with PCOD are:
Infertility |
Ovarian cysts |
Infrequent periods |
Painful periods |
Insulin resistance |
Acanthosis nigricans (presence of dark, thick velvety skin in body folds) |
Obesity |
Insulin resistance syndrome (poor blood sugar control) |
High cholesterol |
High blood pressure |
The significance of losing weight
There is a vicious cycle involved here. Women who have PCOD tend to put on weight and have difficulty losing it. In order to bring their hormone levels under control, they need to lose weight. The right diet for PCOS can work effectively to cut down on weight, here are some tips on ย diet for PCOS
Diet for PCOS : –
The most important tip on the diet for PCOS would be to cut down on simple sugars. Sugary foods bring about a surge in the blood sugar levels, which places undue stress on the body. In the long run, this leads to poor control of blood sugar and weight gain. Cutting down on sugary foods becomes very crucial when you have PCOD. The correct diet for PCOS includes complex carbs instead of simple ones. It is important to develop a taste for nutritious foods rather than eating junk. Here is a table that shows what to have and what to avoid in the diet for PCOS.
Include | Avoid |
Whole wheat products | Refined flour products/maida |
Whole grain / whole wheat bread | White bread |
wholegrain / whole wheat pasta | white pasta |
Barley,ย natural diuretic fruits | Fast foods |
Oats, corn | Cakes, cookies, sweets, chocolates |
Raw fruits and vegetables | High fructose corn syrup |
Fresh fish | Sorbitol |
Lean meats | Soft drinks and soda |
Protein shakes | Bengali mithai, sweets, desserts |
Other than these tips on diet for PCOS, some lifestyle modifications willย also help.
Other lifestyle modifications that help
1. Drink plenty of water:
Drink at least 2 liters of water per day. Flavored water will help. In order to overcome this, try to drink one glass of water whenever the clock strikes the hour. This way, you can incorporate it in your daily routine and stay hydrated throughout the day. Regular intake of water will help with detoxification as well as avoid water retention in the body. You may feel bloated all the time, another reason forย not wanting to drink water. But drinking more water will actually help you in flushing this accumulated water and feel lighter. You need to lose that water weight.
2. Exercise:
Regular exercise will not only help you reduce weight, but will help lessen binge eating. The feel-good hormones (serotonin and dopamine) released with exercise will keep your stress levels also low.
3. Free your life of stress:
The stressors will not vanish, but a daily 1-hour meditation is great to keep yourself from feeling stressed. There are other things that help you feel less stressed, like yoga, music, doing something you really love, and above all taking life a little less seriously. Since stress is a contributing factor of weight gain and PCOD, learning to unwind help.
4. Quit smoking for good:
Experts say that smoking stimulates androgen production, the main culprits of PCOD characteristics. So, kick the butt for good.
5. Say NO to alcohol:
We all know that alcohol affects the liver function, which in turn affects hormone balance. Saying NO to alcohol will not only keep your liver healthy but also check PCOD progression.
Endnote :
Whether it is to fulfill your motherly instincts, regaining your feminine charm, or improving your general health and well-being, the progression of PCOD is something that needs to be checked sooner than later. These tips on diet for PCOS will help.

Hi Ruksi ,
are your menstrual cycles regular ? if they are , then this is not pcos . it might be just some hormonal imbalance. but if your cycles are irregular than all the symptoms you mentioned are signs of pcos . please see a doctor. in both the cases , all you need is hormonal balance correction , which is possible only with due medications, and healthy lifestyle .

Hello ma’am,thank you for providing help towards women who are suffering from pcos.I think after living with pcos with almost 8years ,I feel it can only be managed and it can never have permanent solution. So I am ready to manage it by medicine by doctors and also lifestyle changes.
Let me tell you about myself and also area I want you advice in.I want you to tell me how much body fat is to be maintained to keep pcod in control because I am 50kgs and i never put on weight partly because i am not very interested in food and also because I have a lot of toned muscles maybe high metabolism too.in 9 years my weight has increased only 5kgs.So o don’t know whether I should loose weight or not? I am already pretty thin.
My problem is the irregularities of my diet.I understand a balanced diet but I am not able to meet it.2014 and 2015 i was under a lot of stress i lost weight reaching 47kgs then weakened my immunity too and felt sick.i thought i will never recover but i did.During those 6 months i did not take my oral contraceptive pills as i did not wanted to stress my body. Now i gained weight ,lost my muscle tone and even my strength, skin texture, and above all my hair are growing everywhere now.i feel my body is under huge imbalance.i will go gym and work out but ma’am i don’t want to loose weight help me how to.manage my diet and workout schedule and how to monitor if i am taking care of my body.A diet plan (requiring any amount of discipline) is welcomed.
Thank you.
Akansha
Hi Akansha ,
the best way to manage pcod is to remain in your ideal weight range and be fit . even if you are underweight , you need to put on and come to your right weight . but 50 is good . so definitely weight loss or weight gain should not be your goal . rather just focus on fitness . this can be achieved by following a balanced diet . which you very well know . check out the 1400 and 1500 calorie diet plan on dietburrp . they would help . you can just increase the quantity of consumption so that the energy intake of around 1600 -1800 is man=intained . (you can easily do some maths on this one, with the help of 1400 cal diet chart).
as far as exercises are concerned i must tell you that exercises have a very different way of function in the body . it makes you lose weight if you are over weight , it makes you gain weight if you are underweight . and it helps you achieve the right body tine and increase lean body mass. There is no fixed fat % that you need to attain to manage pcod . but more lean muscles will ensure a better hormonal stat.
you shpould concentrate on aerobic exercises and little bit of strength training. this will help you maintain the right fitness levels.
forot to mention , that regularity with medications is of foremost importance . so please dont ignore this fact.
Hello madam,
I’m 26 years old having weight 63 kgs, my height is 5ft 2″. I’m married since 2 years. I had no problems in my menses earlier but soon after mrg I experienced irregular periods. I went thru all the tests, everything showed normal. Doctor advised me to take 3 months course of contraceptive. Its been 6 months now my periods is normal but I’m gaining weight, lot of hairfall, acne on my back and face, feet burning, oily scalpe n skin, mood swings, experience body heat. What I happening? Is it pcod starting stage? We are planning for the baby this year. Please help me with the dos and don’t s.
Thank you
Hi Ashwini ,
yes the symptoms you have mentioned matches pcod , but the diagnosis depends on the tests , which you said is normal . please recheck and take a 2nd opinion from a different and a good gyneac. early detection will really help in managing the problem well. specially if you are planning for a baby , you must be sure on your health and fitness before the pregnancy is brought in to picture.
Hi Payal,
I am 26. My weight is 62. I am 164 cm, not married. I am also allergic to glutten. So cannot have Chappathi, Rotti, Bread, Rusk, and also hence doesnt take pizzas, burger etc. I am also having acidity problem. I am a person who goes for a walk or jog some times. If I go for a walk or jog for consecutive two three weeks I can maintain my weigh at 60. Sometimes I crave for Chinese foods like chicken manchurian etc and have it. I am working and in a month four or five times I will have food from outside. Else its home made food and fruits that I am having. What steps should I take to manage irregular periods and acidity. Once I come after from walk I often have hiccups due to gas formation. I do take minimum of 3 litres of water every day
Hi Anagha ,
hope you are consuming the other gluten free grains like bajra , jowar , ragi , brown rice , foxtail millets. its ok to eat your desired foods once a week . for hiccups , you need to further increase your liquid intake , specially keep sipping little little water while you walk . or take enough water before you start walking.

PCOD can be cured . and you have enough time . all you need to do is take your medicines as adviced by the doctor , and try to manage your weight near near normal . exercising for 45 mins and consuming a balanced diet will help you in achieving your ideal body weight .

make following corrections in your mentioned plan
– increase walk time from 35 mins to 50 mins . last 20 mins should be fastest.
– dont have chapati for breakfast . use snack items like poha , upama, idli , oats .
– 4.30 exercises to be increased to 45 mins
– 6.30 add a bowl of thin dal (soup consistency). or egg whites to your dinner
– 9.00 pm – add a glass of milk

conceiving takes time when you have pcod problem . homeopathy has good recovery rates of pcod . may be you can try having alternate medicine and check if it works for you .
Hii

Hi Swathi ,
It is hard to predict . in some cases women concieve without much a do , and in some cases women struggle to conceive . it may take longer than in a women without pcod . but it is definitely not an impossible task . so dont worry . just make sure you maintain your right weight and if on medications , then be regular . do the things that are right for you and your wish will be followed.

I am just 18 please suggest me to cntrl my weight i am also suffered from pco to reduce my diet help me
Hi Sasmina,
You are too young to diet . please follow a proper exercise routine and avoid junk food . this is more than useful in your age.
Hi, I am 28yrs old (5.2, weight 52kgs). I was diagnosed with PCOS 2months back. I have been taking great care since then. Exercising and good nutritious diet. But still I am not getting my periods though have been experiencing premenstrual like cramps but no periods at all.
I have two questions, 1. Can it be treated with just diet n exercise or do I need to take medicine.
2. Is junk even once in 15days very harmful for me?
Hi Parul ,
Pcos , is a hormonal condition . It can be treated only with medicine. diet and exercises are needed to make sure that your body remains healthy and you could avoid the side effects of this issue (like gaining weight and getting acne and pimples). with diet and exercises , you ensure that ypu keep your body clean and healthy and keep yourself away from these common issues which cn even worsen the hormonal stats and lead to further complication .
Having said that. I really appreciate that ypou have been very cautious about your health and food choices . this will definitely help . but getting ypour periods on time is not something that a diet could help you with. please dont punish yourself. you are young and its that time of life where you can enjoy eating good food . so once in a while a little indulgence never harms you if you are otherwise doing everything right and exercising too. so dont get over stressed. and enjoy with caution ofcourse.
Hi,
I just went through your article, it is very clear and good write up. I have developed PCOD and hypothyroidism since four long years. Initially I lost 2 kgs but now I have again gained the weight. I walk an hour daily in early morning and eat raw veggies a lot but i am big fan of non veg food and hardly avoid junk food. I have a 4 year old child. Could you please help me with the deit plan. If your office is in Bangalore then please share the address so that I can come and meet you. Thanks in advance.

Hi Julia,
acne , hair growth on body and hair fall are all bcoz of pcod. hormonal imbalance does all this to you . but if you stress the problem will increase. so the best way to deal with these issues is to eat healthy and workout . if you manage to keep your weight near normal you will be able to fight all these problems. eat healthy , have green teas to increase metabolic rate, eat a lot of antioxidant rich foods like capsicum , tomatoes, basically all vibrant colour foods and fruits. you will be able to fight stress and build up stamina for your acedemics and sports. just feel happy inside.
Hello Payal,
Good day. My age is 29years old weighing 66 kgs with the height of 5feet and 4 inches. Checked the BMI and i am normal. I am diagnosed with PCOS, could you please advise me a diet accordingly. Also please advise if we can have green tea post lunch and can we consume horsegram if we are planning for a baby. Please advise.
Hi Rajee ,
yes green tea will help . horse gram is good but have in limitations . exercises like walking are needed.
I have been detected with Polycystic ovaries. But as per normal symptoms go I have regular periods. Only thing I noticed on complete check up was HDL was slightly high around 135. Im around 160 cm and I weigh 55kgs. My BMI score seems to be normal. What kind of diet would you recommend for me
Hi Ridhi ,
everything is normal . increased level of HDL is a good sign. wight is ok too . and luckily your periods are regular . so dont worry . just keep a 30 – 45 mins exercise routine everyday and follow healthy eating habits .
Hi Payal,
I have bee diagnosed with PCOD from past 4 years. I had gained 12 kilos in 2 years. My height is 164 cms and my weight was 69.7 before weight loss. And i had pimples all over my face, neck and back which looks very ugly. Hence last year I made up my mind and reduced 12 kilos and now I have gained back 5 kilos again. I height is 164 cms and current weight is 62.5. I have been exercising regularly and my i avoid all the foods mentioned in ur list. Occasionally I eat junk food or sweet, that too limited quantity. I have consumed aldactone for over 2 years. Since we are planning to conceive doctor asked us to stop taking aldactone. Its been 75 days i have stopped medicine and my face is filled with acne. All over. How do I get rid of PCOD completely and acne and also want to get pregnant. I tried and depressed. I do excerise 6 days a week for one hour daily. (skip only when m travelling)
I am not overweight or obese. Please help me to get rid of PCOD completely plz. If i reach 55kgs can i get rid of PCOD forever?
Will wait for your help and support.
Hi Maya,
pcod is more of an hormonal issue , hence the line of treatment involves getting your hormones right , this is possible with proper medication and weight management . you have really managed your weight well. and are regularly exercising too. i think its the medicine that needs to be looked after and changed . may be you can consult a different doctor for a 2nd opinion. by the way we have certain clients who had pcod and are now doing better with homeopathy treatments. its all about what suits you more.
Hello mam,

hello mam.i m 23 year old.. unmarride girl .i m suffring from pcod last 5 year…about my knowledge..i take madicide regular given by dr..krimson 35 .but when i stop taking pills i missed my periods.some dr says thid treatment is done by only homeopathy.some says alopathy..but i didnot satisfied with all dr..and also she never told me about diet and exercise..plz tell me what i have to do.is posible to cure this..
Hi Nimisha ,
it is all about weight and hormonal balance . hormones can be balanced through medication , and you can slowly get back to your regular periods with constant efforts on losing weight and getting healthy and fit. the closer you come to your fitness, lesser will be the need for medicine and everything will be good. so continue with both the parts. a lot of my clients use homeopathy treatment and they have benefitted with it too . you can definitely give it a try.
