How to Gain weight ?

Last Updated on February 10, 2018 | RD, Payal Banka (Registered Dietitian) 556 Comments

how to gain weight

How to gain weight ? A question which dietitians areย rarely asked in this world where obesity dominates all the other health issues. But only a person who is underweight willย understand the seriousness of it. Gaining weight is equally hard as is losing weight. Both problems require you to exercise properly and eat healthy food. Lets find out how to gain weight.

The reasons for being underweight –

  • Eating disorders
  • Chronic diseases
  • Lack of physical activity.
  • Heredity

There are chances that an underweight person willย have lower immunity levels and can easily fall prey to illness and infections. The rate of recovery in underweight people is slower than in healthy individuals. Thus there is a need for an underweight individual to gain weight and become fit.

Here are some tips on how to gain weight:-

How to gain weight –

โ€ข Counting calories: Calculateย  your basic calorie requirement. You want to know how toย  gain weight ? You will have to increase your calorie intake. Add 500 calories per day to your current requirement. Those who work out or are physically very active, have a higher energy requirement. If such is a case the calories consumed should be greater than the amount of calories you burn.

โ€ข Eat more: The most common answer to your question how to gain weight. Everybody will ask you to eat more.ย Yes, you need to increase the quantity of food you eat,ย but at the same time you have to make sure you are eating healthy. Eat five to six meals a day. Avoid skipping any meal. Knowing how to gain weight involves consistent eating. Increase your portion size. If you eat 2 chapatis, then start eating a 3rd one. Take a second scoop of pasta, or add two bananas to your bowl of cereals. Or try theย  oatmeal banana blueberry bread.

โ€ข Choose calorie–dense foods:ย  Choose foods that are higher in healthy calories. For example choose to eat corn, potatoes or peas instead of carrots and cucumbers. Eat a banana, custard apple, chikku or mango instead of a watermelon or orange juice. Peanut butters andย  cheese makes a calorie-dense yet nutritious spread for your sandwich. Read food labels for the serving size and the calories.

We now have a detailed Indian diet plan for bodybuilding. This diet plan consists of both vegetarian and non – vegetarian options for our Indian readers.

โ€ข Adopt good habits: The repetitive advice to increase your food intake does not meanย you start eating unhealthy, fried, sweet or junk food for that matter. Adopt healthy habits. Eat your meals on time. Do not skip any meal, specially breakfast. Whatever you eat at breakfast is better absorbed and utilized by your system. So don’t forget to take a handful of nuts everyday along with good quality protein like toned milk and boiled eggs. Maintain a 2 hour window between each meal so that you can feel he hunger and eat better quantities.

โ€ข Add more liquids: You may be thinking how to gain weight with liquids. But drinking appropriate quantity of water or other liquids will help you in flushing all the waste products accumulated after digestion of those extra calories you ate. Drink water or juices. If you dislike drinking water, choose on flavored water , apple juice, milkshakes , smoothies etc. Specially if you are working out, the body needs that extra liter of water.

โ€ข Avoid junk food: All this while you read that you must increase your calorie intake. Aย lot of people often use the synonym high calorie to junk food. What we forget is that junk food is not only high in calories but provides trans fats. Sure you want to know how to gain weight, but in a healthy manner. Avoid cupcakes, cookies, cakes, margarine , processed meats and packaged foods.

โ€ข Weight training: A lot of people are of an opinion that exercise is for people who want to lose weight. How to gain weight with exercise? Exercise works both waysย andย will make you fit by getting you to your right weight. Whether it requires losing some pounds or putting on some pounds, exercise will stimulate your appetite, increase your energy needs and more over convert those extra calories into muscle instead of fat. Read about Protein supplements .

โ€ข Sleep more:ย  Sleeping is the best thing you could do to keep yourself healthy. yes it is as important as exercising is. Unfit people are almost always sleep deprived. make sure you sleepย for at least 7-8 hours every day.

The key to the question, ” how to gain weight ?” is to find the cause behind being underweight. If the reason for you being underweight is stress or tension, then instead of exercising and eating, you should concentrate on yoga, meditation or other relaxing techniques to become healthy.ย  If it is heredity, there are chances you might not put on much even after trying every bit. but don’t get disappointed. Just work your way towards health and fitness. Who says you don’t qualify to be a fit person if you weigh 2 kgs less than what you should.

So to summarize on how to gain weight, all you need is exercise, healthy food, and some rest!

      Hi Rajnesh ,

please dont feel dejected .. all you need is a little discipline in your routine . no gain without pain right .. so you have to give up on somethings to gain at the other front of life.. if it was so easy, every tom dick and harry would be masculine like vin diesel.. but its all about dedication , hard work and choosing priorities . so dont let your weaknesses gain on you and pull you towards ill health . set you mind , swear on eating only healthy and give up on all junk .. follow a routine or discipline of timings and show up at gym . i think more than, my advice motivation is all you need .

Thanks for your informative article.Though my BMI is ok i.e.19.6.(Ht-178cms, Wt-62Kgs,age-26) iam thinking of gaining some more weight as iam looking thin.

But as you have mentioned that heredity is also a cause of being slim, I like to know whether it’s true for all cases because in my case all my dad’s family male members are lean while my mom’s family members are a bit stout. So what’s your opinion of chances for me to gain a little more mass.

i think you got it wrong .. you work out and do diets to look bulked up .. its not the other way round .. so you dont need to bulk up to join gym … protein powders will work better on body if you go to gym and workout and take these powders as pre and post workout shake.

      Hi Ashhish ,

you dont need to follow the plan as it is .. make a note of the food items mentioned in the chart , and eat whatever is possible for you . also make a note of things that are easy to carry in your college sack .. like a small lunch box with ladoos , chikki and some dry fruit , have them at break time or while traveling, or whenever possible in your routine.

      Hi Vaishali,

Thanks for reading at Dietburrp. i request you to please think logical and act practically . gaining 10 kgs in a month is an unrealistic goal. you must first concentrate on your anemia , because that is going to be a main hurdle in your weight gain journey. the above given plan is perfect for you to follow and work both towards your anemia and weight gain.

Don’t forget self confidence is not as much about your look as your intellect. so don’t feel inferior , just keep working in this regards an your efforts will pay your off well . all the best :)

      Hi Arvind ,

Thanks for reading at Dietburrp. use this tool and calculate your BMR. this is your minimum BMR. we add on 500 – 800 calories to this to make a person gain weight. – https://www.dietburrp.com/bmr-calculator/

no i do not agree with only 3 meal pattern. if i dump you with a lot of calories in 1 meal, it will not only make you feel nauseous , but unhealthy , and bolated too. you will not be abl to carry out your day to day activity. hence evenly distributed meals and calories will help you in better digestion and healthy weight gain

Thank You for the clarification. So the BMR for me is at 1554Cal/day. Alot of people who I’ve inquired about why I’m still very lean even with a normal diet told me that its because I have a higher metabolic rate. Can I take nutrition supplements since I can’t immerse myself with an elaborate diet due to my educational schedule ?? If so could you please suggest me some mass gaining products ??

plz try to calculate how many grams of protein is present in your mass gainer. ( it will be mentioned on the label.) and make sure you have around 1.5 gms of protein per kg body weight. and you can accordingly divide the protein in your food and add upo with this mass gainer.

      Hi ARYA,

Yes you can have dosas in the evening. but instead of walking and skipping, i would recommend you to do some strength training exercises. they work best when it comes to weight gain. if being underweight is hereditary, dont worry , dont aim at gaining weight. just aim at being fit , and not looking weak , but looking smart . this will help you gain confidence and you would soon reach your fitness level.

So day by day she is becoming weaker and not able to eat anything. I already consulted doctors and everyone just says – let her eat whatever regular food she can take. But the problem is – there is nothing she is liking these days.

Please advise some food chart for her if possible. Any other suggestion in this aspect is welcome.

    Thanks again,

    Bapi
