10 common mistakes dieters make

So many people go on a diet, only to end up disappointed. Why is the success rate so low, you may ask. After analyzing scores of dieting cases, it was seen that there are some concepts that may be going wrong, leading to disappointment in weight loss.

  1. Starving during the day and eating only one meal at night: Though this may sound repetitive, it is vital to weight loss and so frequently ignored, that one is forced to remind potential dieters of this.
  2. Eating sprouts on a day when you are also eating cooked food: The combination of sprouts and regular cooked food is very fattening. If you are eating sprouts, then do not add anything with it. The best time to eat sprouts is before your workout or early in the morning. But when you eat a bowl of sprouts along with your lunch / dinner, then the sprouts will only form gases and will not be that helpful for weight loss. When having sprouts, do not mix it with any other cooked food.
  3. Drinking juices (very fattening) and coconut water (good for kidney, not so good when trying to knock off flab).
  4. Eating plenty of ketchup, pickles.
  5. Eating too many of the diet foods like diet chocolate, diet fizzy drinks, diet cookies (heavy on fat and loaded with aspartame which in high doses also prevents weight loss).
  6. Eating too many carbs : Often repeated but true because some people with a carb-sensitive profile do not lose weight despite being on a low calorie diet.
  7. Drinking mega-doses of milk and consuming lot of dairy in the form of curd, paneer, cheese:  Too much of dairy makes the elimination system sluggish, a sensible amount of dairy suits some people but not all blood groups.
  8. Drinking tea/coffee more than 8 cups a day: Creates toxins within the system which stagnates weight loss.
  9. Drinking soup at night does not suit women as it promotes water retention and increases weight.
  10. Eating dals at night: Too heavy to digest and stays as calories. And here are a few more:
  11. A lot of people consider dals as proteins whereas most dals have only 30% protein so their protein content is 1/3 that of egg and dals have 65-70% carbs (so a lot of dals can add to your carbs too).
  12. Doing fad diets like only vegetables and fruits for 7 days will  always lead to rebound weight gain.
  13. Worrying endlessly:  Sounds strange but true, the more you fret about weight loss the less likely it is going to fall, so cheer up, go slow and 1 year of consistent weight loss is far better than a lifetime of dieting!

      Hey Nitu,

what i mean in the first point is , a lot of people assume that avoiding food and startving themselves will help in weight loss. i come across a lot of people who ignore food through out the day and just have 1 meal mostly at night or late evening to lose weight. this is incorrect and not healthy. and may be a reason that your health is detoriating and you are stuck with no more weight loss , as the body has entered femine mode .

fasting once in a week , where in you give up on cereals and mostly eat all fruits and raw veggies is a good way to detoxify. bu overdoing this more than once a week is not advisable.

      Hi Rumaisa,

Indeed a very good decision for your age. instead of dieting , just watch your food , and eat healthy , avoid binge. and yes do a 45 mins walk every day . this will help in drastic weight loss.

      Hi Satyanarayanan,

Thank you for reading at Dietburrp. Yes there is a possibility this is because of hypothyroidism. But winters will bring in binging as the season changes the BMR and thus we keep feeling hungry all day long to be able to cope up with the decreasing temperature. If you are not in a very cold region, still if the temperature drops down a bit from wht it usually is , you would see a similar effect.

what i would suggest you is to increase your protein intake. proteins helps in bringing upo the feeling of fullness. and plus they do not cause much weight gain. eat every 2 hourly and take low cal snacks like popcorn, baked chips, roasted channa, green tea , fruits , salads , kadlepuri etc …. these things will let you binge over without inputing much calories.

you can find a weight loss diet plan for your cuisine type here – https://www.dietburrp.com/south-indian-diet-plan-for-weight-loss-1200-calories/

    Hi Payal,

I read above article and did not understand point 2 –
Eating sprouts on a day when you are also eating cooked food : The combination of sprouts and regular cooked food is very fattening.

I was asked to eat 1 bowl moth sprouts with after noon tea. And same day, I am having my roti, sabji, daal etc. Is this wrong? When it is right to have sprouts?

Could you please help me understand this?

    Thanks Again!

      Hi Geeta ,

Yes if you are eating sprouts , then do not add anything with it. the best time to eat ssprout is before your workout or ealy in the morning. But when you eat a sprout bowl along with your lunch / dinner, then the sprouts will only form gases and will not be that helpful for weight loss. So when having sprouts , dont mix it with any other cooked food :) .. i hope this clears your doubt. i am changing the language in the article as well to make it understandable to others. thanks for pointing out :)
