Benefits of Skipping Rope ; The Legendary Jumping Rope

Last Updated on June 8, 2016 | RD, Payal Banka (Registered Dietitian) 38 Comments

Alot of weight watchers jump ropes everyday. They think that benefits of skipping rope will help them with weight loss. Does skipping rope really helps in weight loss ? What are the benefits of skipping rope ? Lets find out .

benefits of skipping rope

Remember your most energetic days when your dad bought you a skipping rope? Remember those moments when you enjoyed teasing your bro or sis for their inabilities to compete with you over the number of jumps? Remember those days when skipping used to be an integral part of your early morning play regime? Remember those days when winning became more glorified after you could beat your toughest rival at your school’s annual sports day? If you do remember all these days, then there are chances that you are just ‘remembering’ these days and not re-living them.

We cease to remain as a child as life moves on. And in the process, we surrender our liveliness to the fulfillment of multiple obligations that often takes a toll on our health. It is indeed very difficult to foster your love for your good-old skipping rope during your adulthood under such a time-bound and duty-bound scenario. But with heart and love being closely related to each others’ existence, it definitely makes sense if you do something that makes your heart beat faster. And probably, romancing your skipping rope is one way to make your heart feel its existence and be the driver of energy that defines your liveliness.Let us see the various benefits of skipping rope on your over all health.

Benefits of Skipping Rope

Here are top 8 reasons why you may want to pick up your skipping rope at least once daily:

  • For a full-body workout:

The best benefits of a skipping rope is that it is an instrument facilitating full-body workout. It trains your heart, arms, abs, legs, and most importantly- your mind. It boosts your body’s rhythm, speed, timing, agility, and strength. Skipping produces a medium impact which helps to increase bone density and it does not strain your joints unlike running. Skipping produces results that cardio and strength training can together produce.

  • For preserving the health of your lymphatic system:

Your lymphatic system is your body’s sewerage system that removes waste and toxins from your body. However, its activities are not promoted by a pump and it relies on the expansion and contraction of your muscles for facilitating its waste disposal activities. When you jump, the up-and-down motion that gets generated helps to keep your lymphatic system active. An healthy lymphatic system promotes healthy skin and this is another reason why you may want to include skipping in your daily workout regime.

  • For its do-it-anywhere advantage:

You can skip anywhere at any corner of your home provided there is a little bit of space in front, a little at the  back and an overhead clearance. All you need to do is to find an appropriate place in your home and decide on a routine for your indoor physical activities. This is especially useful if outdoor physical activities are restricted due to climatic/ weather conditions and if you are someone who is sincere about maintaining a daily workout routine.

  • For its minimalist personality:

Jumping rope is a simple workout tool. You can take it anywhere when you travel. Pack it in your backpack or purse. And you won’t even feel that you are carrying it.

  • For its ‘modest’ value:

A jumping rope comes at a very cheap price and yet, if used effectively, it produces the effects that you might have otherwise achieved with the use of heavy weights and costly workout machines. You can get a jumping rope from any toy-store or sport-store or from any department store.

  • For its fast and fun way to warm you up:

Skipping a rope may always make you feel that you are still a kid. If you are working from home and need to keep your heart pumping faster, you may skip for 5 minutes whenever you feel like throughout the day. This is better, easier, and faster than making an effort to dress up and to do some outdoor activity. And you cannot go out multiple times a day. When you feel like doing a physical activity, just jump for a few minutes in your home or at your backyard and then quickly return to what you have been doing. This is so easy!

  • For its creative ways:

Jumping a rope may seem to be an activity that generates monotony. However, jumping can be performed in various styles which will help you to stay motivated and master each style. Once you master the basic one hop, try learning the tricks of one foot jump, side straddles, front straddles, alternating jumps, skier, double-under, and ‘arms cross’. Try these techniques as you listen to your favorite song and test your strength with the number of reps that you are able to complete. Competing with your own self becomes more interesting at times!

  • For its various positive health effects:

The best benefits of skipping rope is that Jumping promotes blood flow . This helps to transport more nutrients to your skin and other organs. It strengthens the internal organs of your body and allows them to work more efficiently. It opens clogged pores and promotes elimination of toxins through sweat and this way, it serves as a remedy for acne. It maintains hormonal balance in the body and supports your overall body functions. It is a great stress busting activity that allows you to de-stress at any time of the day.

Make jumping an enjoyable activity rather than making it a boring must-do activity that has been recommended by health experts. When you love an activity and enjoy doing that repetitively, you make a step towards achieving the best results. As we said earlier, compete with yourself and see yourself making great improvements day by day.

Avail the best benefits of skipping rope by Starting with 50 jumps on the first day, then touching 200 or 300 is indeed a great experience. Seeing your stamina grow with your age is perhaps one of the most motivating advancements that all of us would love to cherish. Try doing workouts with your friends and family members and re-live your childish past that was once marked with feelings of hope and ‘unconditional’ liveliness.

Your body must have gotten used to the exercises and walking you do and now adjusts to whatever little calories you are intaking. this happens in a lot of cases where despite all efforts you don’t lose a bit. breaking this plateau requires a lot of patience …. here is what you can do …….. exercise wise – stop doing what you are already doing for a week … and then you surprise your body with a new activity ..
for ex – you have been walking all these days, so now change your activity to swimming / Zumba dancing/skating/ gyming / playing badminton or lawn tennis … whatever suits you best. tai chi and kickboxing and pilates work excellently in such cases., I know it’s hard to find time and availability of such sports around you .. but if you want to get there .. you need to find harder !!

Diet wise – Change your food pattern and eating timings. for ex . you can change the type of food you eat. if you were eating rotis , you can now change that , and introduce millets , sprouts and rice in your meals , and vice versa . change from eating wheat roti to bajra , jowar etc … this way the body will take time to adjust to the new routine and will start losing weight again.

Walking or exercising for 45 mins everyday will help you in a good way to lose weight.skipping will help too .. but skipping for 45 mins with a heavy body wil lead to knee pains . so my advice is that you opt for walking or any other exercise and club it with skipping for 1000 counts or more if your body allows . but dont over stress your knee joints. along with the exercise you also need follow a healthy regime. You can find some basic and important tips for weight loss in this article here – https://www.dietburrp.com/top-10-weight-loss-tips/ if you want me to analyse your regime and plan a diet plan personalized for you, please see this page. – https://www.dietburrp.com/diet-services/
