How to gain weight ? A question which dietitians areย rarely asked in this world where obesity dominates all the other health issues. But only a person who is underweight willย understand the seriousness of it. Gaining weight is equally hard as is losing weight. Both problems require you to exercise properly and eat healthy food. Lets find out how to gain weight.

The reasons for being underweight –

  • Eating disorders
  • Chronic diseases
  • Lack of physical activity.
  • Heredity

There are chances that an underweight person willย have lower immunity levels and can easily fall prey to illness and infections. The rate of recovery in underweight people is slower than in healthy individuals.Thus there is a need for an underweight individual to gain weight and become fit.

Here are some tips on how to gain weight:-

How to gain weight –

 

 

โ€ข Counting calories: Calculateย  your basic calorie requirement.You want to know how toย  gain weight ? You will have to increase your calorie intake. Add 500 calories per day to your current requirement. Those who work out or are physically very active, have a higher energy requirement. If such is a case the calories consumed should be greater than the amount of calories you burn.

โ€ข Eat more: The most common answer to your question how to gain weight. Everybody will ask you to eat more.ย Yes, you need to increase the quantity of food you eat,ย but at the same time you have to make sure you are eating healthy. Eat five to six meals a day. Avoid skipping any meal. Knowing how to gain weight involves consistent eating. Increase your portion size. If you eat 2 chapatis, then start eating a 3rd one. Take a second scoop of pasta, or add two bananas to your bowl of cereals. Or try theย  oatmeal banana blueberry bread.

โ€ข Choose calorie–dense foods:ย  Choose foods that are higher in healthy calories. For example choose to eat corn, potatoes or peas instead of carrots and cucumbers. Eat a banana, custard apple, chikku or mango instead of a watermelon or orange juice. Peanut butters andย  cheese makes a calorie-dense yet nutritious spread for your sandwich. Read food labels for the serving size and the calories.

Eat your meals on time. Do not skip any meal, specially breakfast. Whatever you eat at breakfast is better absorbed and utilized by your system. So don’t forget to take a handful of nuts everyday along with good quality protein like toned milk and boiled eggs. Maintain a 2 hour window between each meal so that you can feel he hunger and eat better quantities.

โ€ข Add more liquids: You may be thinking how to gain weight with liquids. But drinking appropriate quantity of water or other liquids will help you in flushing all the waste products accumulated after digestion of those extra calories you ate. Drink water or juices. If you dislike drinking water, choose on flavored water , apple juice, milkshakes , smoothies etc. Specially if you are working out, the body needs that extra liter of water.

โ€ข Avoid junk food: All this while you read that you must increase your calorie intake. Aย lot of people often use the synonym high calorie to junk food. What we forget is that junk food is not only high in calories but provides trans fats. Sure you want to know how to gain weight, but in a healthy manner. Avoid cupcakes, cookies,cakes, margarine , processed meats and packaged foods.

โ€ข Weight training: A lot of people are of an opinion that exercise is for people who want to lose weight. How to gain weight with exercise? Exercise works both waysย andย will make you fit by getting you to your right weight. Whether it requires losing some pounds or putting on some pounds, exercise will stimulate your appetite, increase your energy needs and more over convert those extra calories into muscle instead of fat. โ€ข Sleep more:ย  Sleeping is the best thing you could do to keep yourself healthy. yes it is as important as exercising is. Unfit people are almost always sleep deprived. make sure you sleepย for at least 7-8 hours every day.

The key to the question, ” how to gain weight ?” is to find the cause behind being underweight. If the reason for you being underweight is stress or tension, then instead of exercising and eating, you should concentrate on yoga, meditation or other relaxing techniques to become healthy.ย  If it is heredity, there are chances you might not put on much even after trying every bit. but don’t get disappointed. Just work your way towards health and fitness. Who says you don’t qualify to be a fit person if you weigh 2 kgs less than what you should.

So to summarize on how to gain weight, all you need is exercise, healthy food, and some rest!

    Thanks for the article ma’am. I am 31 years old and a mother of 2 young kids. With my busy life it is difficult to even eat 3 meals properly. My weight is only 43 kg at 5 ft 3 inch height.
    Please suggest a simple pure veg (perferably jain too!) diet plan and yoga exercises that require minimum time and effort, with the respective frequency. Thank you.

    Hello Payal,

    First I would like to thank you for the service you are doing to fellow people. It is quite noble.

    I am 40Yrs, Height 5’8″ weight 57. The weight has been in the range of 55-60 all of my life :=).
    I had severe acidity problem, triggering Lactose intolerance, which is quite recovered now. Had very poor immunity which causes code infection very quickly.

    I am doing 35 minutes daily workout, mainly stretching and few strengthening targeting my back muscles.
    At the same time, I have been always searching for a good diet plan to help me balance my nutritional as well as weight gain needs.

    What would you advise? Will be happy to get in touch for a private planning.

    Hello ma’am,

    I am 18 years old. My weight is 52kgs and I am 5’10 tall. so u can imagine how thin i look like. I really want to gain weight but in a healthy way. I live in hostel and I think u know about the food quality that I can get.     Hi i m 30 yrs male height 5.2 my wt is 52kg
    I had started playing badminton for 1 hr in morning since last 7 days but i feel i m looking thinner than before though i can eat breakfast better than before.so shall i continue playing..??& my stools r not regular even though i drink 3-4 litres of water per day plz suggest something so that i can have regular stools.

    I am 67 years old retired person, I am vegetarian since last 26 years. After my wife broke her right leg ( Tibia) one year back and since then I had to manage everything in the house( Son and Daughter being not with us for their Job) gradually after 8 months my weight started reducing. I have reduced by 5 kg in one year ie. from 62 Kg to 57 Kg within 5/6 months. I was a patient of Duodenal ulcer and was operated upon with Vagotomy and pyloroplasty before 32 years. All these years I maintained without much physical trouble. But now again acidity problem started with bitter taste in mouth. I never take any Junk food except 2 cups of lite black tea. My height is 170 cms. Please suggest what should be my proper diet.

    My name is sonu . I am 25 years old and 5’6″ tall and i weigh only 55 kg . I look very skinny. In the last 4-5 years i tried many ayurvedic and other supplements and i touched weight 63kg . After every course of 4-5 or 6 months again i see myself at back . My weight decreases gradually even after having same while i had with supplement . I am too much upset with this. Kindly suggest me your best either supplemet or home made diet which can stick my weight 65kg-70kg.but it should not throw me back after leaving this. I would be thankfull to you.
