We all embrace new motherhood with a lot of love and tenderness. This Indian diet plan for lactating mothers will help you in your journey. ย โ€œNow you need to eat for two!โ€, we have often heard this statement in Indian Households after a woman gives birth. Well, a lactating mother does need to eat both for herself and her baby. This Indian diet plan for lactating mothers will help you clear the air.

Needless to say that a mother’s body is really weak after delivery; she also needs to get extra nutrition to be able to deliver nutrients to her little one. An infant is completely dependent on the mother for all his/her needs, be it food, hygiene, sleep or attachment. The child gets all the nutrition from the motherโ€™s milk unless the mother isnโ€™t able to secrete milk due to a problem. The child eats whatever goes in his mummyโ€™s tummy! Often, the child is even able to taste the food in the motherโ€™s milk.

Important Tips for an Indian diet plan for lactating mothers:

It is true that a lactating mother needs to eat for two people as long as sheโ€™s going to be feeding the baby. The mother must get sufficient nutrition else the baby will derive nutrients from the motherโ€™s body and she may suffer from nutritional deficiencies and many other problems.

  • Lactating mothers feel hungry more often and they should eat whenever they feel so.
  • When a baby doesnโ€™t get nutritious milk, She will become unhealthy and also demand frequent feeds.
  • The stress should be on getting extra nutrition and not extra calories. This is important both for the mother and the baby.
  • Extra calories are only going to add on the weight and will not help with the growth of the baby nor will they give strength to the mother. Ourย Indian diet plan for lactating mothers will give you an insight into the right food choices you need to make.

Word of Caution –

The above-mentioned chart is a reference chart. It may or may not suit your requirements. Hence it is better to use the mentioned items in small quantities to check the suitability before you adapt it completely.

Along with this Indian diet plan for Lactating mothers, it is important to walk for 45 mins every day after the 3rd month of your pregnancy will ensure you do not put on weight. Hence don’t worry. Eat healthily and walk to keep fit.

Let us now see the list of foods that you should include and those you should avoid while lactating.

 

Foods to include in the Indian diet plan for lactating mothers:

When a mother is breastfeeding, she needs to include galactagogues in her diet. Galactagogues are those foods that facilitate milk production and increase it. You must eat foods that give strength and speed up the process of healing. In earlier times, the mother was made to eat khichdi more often but nowadays doctors recommend eating a normal diet after 2-3 days of delivery. Here are some foods that should be included in the Indian diet plan for lactating mothers:

  • Proteins:

The baby is in the growing stage and needs lots of proteins. Mothers must eat lots of proteins for 2 reasons. one to meet the growing baby’s requirement and for self-healing.

Protein Foods to include in a lactating mothers diet:
  • Soybean, chicken, grilled fish, and egg whites can be included in less spicy and grilled form after 15 days of delivery.
  • Mothers can also get proteins by drinking a glass of milk along with a spoon of protein powder recommended by the gynecologist.ย Take Milk 2 times a day.
  • Soaked Almonds (15 pieces per day).
  • Vegetarian moms can include a lot of orange masoor dal as it helps in increasing the milk supply. You can also include Mung dal, Paneer and cheese in your diet.
  • Avoid Curd intake in the first 2 months after delivery. You can start eating curd from 3rd month onward.
  • Consume Chickpeas and lentils in lesser quantity. Introduce these foods in the mother’s diets after 20 – 25 days of delivery.
  • If you feel that lentils are hard on your digestion or your baby’s digestion. Skip it till your baby turns 3 months old. then reintroduce these foods. Lentils are gas-causing foods and a little harsh on the digestion of the newborn.
  • Liquids:

Indian Non-Vegetarian GM Diet Plan for Weight Loss

A lactating mother should drink ample liquids since it helps in milk production. Less intake can lead to dehydration and decreased supply of milk. (Read – Benefits of Beetroot Juice)

Liquid foods to include in a Lactating mother’s diet:
  • Water and coconut water.
  • Vegetable-based soups made out of spinach, bottle gourd, beetroot, and carrots are super beneficial.
  • Ragi kanji, ย buttermilk (after 1 month of delivery ) and milk, etc are good options.
  • Drinking a liquid half an hour prior to feeding is most beneficial.

 

  • Whole grains:

Eat lots of whole grains and whole-grain foods since these are highly nutritious and easily digestible.

Whole-grain foods to include in lactating mothers’ diet:
  • Whole wheat flour
  • Oats and broken wheat daliya.
  • Brown rice, quinoa, ragi, Museli, etc.

 

  • Vitamins:

Consume Green leafy vegetables and fruits periodically in order to get lots of vitamins and minerals. They help in better milk production and a good let down effect. Vitamins are essential for the proper growth of the baby and to get the systems to function normally in a mother after delivery.

  • Spinach, dill, and fenugreek.
  • You can include Pumpkins, bottle gourds, ridge gourds, Parval (pointed gourds ) and tinda .
  • Carrots and beetroots are especially very good for the lactating mom and the growing baby.
  • Beans can be included in your diet in little quantity after 20 – 25 days of delivery.
  • ย Fruits like Apple, pomegranate, pear, and papaya are good to have.

 

  • Herbal teas or Herbal Infusions:

One can drink herbal teas prepared with ingredients that are safe to take while breastfeeding. The biggest advantage of drinking herbal tea is that it doesnโ€™t contain caffeine. you can buy a ready herbal mix or make your own at home.

Ingredients to use for Homemade Herbal Infusions:
  • Ajwain or Gondh katira – ย Ajwain infused water is beneficial in correcting the digestion issues and getting the entire digestive system to work right after the baby’s birth. It helps the mother shed some fat and clear the blood clots with easy.
  • Mint leaves and some Cloves or sounf / fennel seeds – This drink increases the milk secretions and thus facilitates lactation.
  • Lemongrass and Ginger – Ginger helps a lot in healing and as a pain reliever in women after delivery.

  • Iron and Calcium:

The mother loses lots of blood during delivery and needs to renew her iron stores. Calcium is needed for the healthy bones and teeth of the baby. Sources of Iron food in lactating Mothers diet:
  • Non-vegetarian mom can include liver and organ meat of chicken and duck.
  • Meats like pork, lamb, and beef.
  • Seafood like oysters, sardines, mussels, and shellfish.
  • Vegetarian moms can include dry beans, black-eyed peas, and green peas.
  • Cabbage, broccoli, kale, and turnip greens.
  • Foods cooked in iron vessels with tomatoes will also provide some iron.
  • Pressed rice (Poha ) and Puffed rice are good sources too.
  • Replacing Sugar with Jaggery can help too.
Sources of Calcium food in lactating Mothers diet:
  • Milk and milk products like curd, cheese, and paneer.
  • Fishes with soft bones like salmon, anchovies, and sardines.
  • Leafy vegetables like kale, mustard greens, and turnip tops.
  • Ragi, sesame and Rajgeera.

 

  • Galactagogues:

Galactagogues are an essential part of a lactating motherโ€™s meals. They help to increase the milk supply and meet the growing needs of the baby. ย These can be easily incorporated in our day to recipes and given to the mother. We have incorporated these Galactogogues in our Indian diet plan for lactating mothers

Galactagogues foods that can be included in a lactating mother’s diet:
  • Shatavari, fenugreek and fennel seeds.
  • Milk,
  • Almonds,
  • Orange Masoor dal,
  • Spinach,
  • Garlic,
  • Sesame and poppy seeds, and
  • Ragi kanji also help in increasing milk secretions.

Foods to avoid in Indian diet plan for lactating mothers:

A lactating mother needs to eat carefully. She cannot eat certain types of foods yet since some foods are difficult to digest and some foods are not good for the baby. Here are some foods that are better avoided Indian diet plan for lactating mothers.

  • Spicy foods:

Your child does get a taste of everything you eat so it is better to avoid spicy and strongly flavored foods. If your child drinks spicy milk, he/she might not like to take a feed again.

  • Oily foods:

Avoid having too many fried and oily foods. Oily foods are heavy and hard to digest. Ghee and oil should be used in moderation while cooking food for a breastfeeding mother since she doesnโ€™t have much activity and this can lead to weight gain.

  • Cruciferous vegetables:

Vegetables such as cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage and asparagus are cruciferous. Avoid them. These are difficult to digest and can cause infant colic and gas. Legumes like rajma, chana and soya beans should also be avoided for the first 2-3 months after.

Try not to rely on aerated drinks to quench your thirst as they only contain artificial sugar and calories. Packaged juices are fattening too. Hence it is better to have homemade fresh juices instead of buying packaged juices.

  • Caffeinated drinks:

Caffeine is best avoided as it is a diuretic and will only make you rush to the washroom more often. They also cause heartburn and nausea. If you really want to have tea, try herbal tea.

  • Cigarettes:

Cigarette smoking can affect the growth of the baby. Hence it should be avoided.

  • Alcohol:

Alcohol contains nicotine and toxins which can prove to be harmful to the baby, thus it is better to avoid drinking while youโ€™re breastfeeding. It can pass on from the blood into your breast milk and thus it can affect the baby adversely.

It is very important to not give up. There will be instances where you will feel or others in the family will make you feel that your milk is not sufficient for your baby. The baby will become cranky or demand more often for feeds. But these are all phases. According to the baby sciences, every baby gets cranky and more demanding once in a month or 45 days on account of the sudden growth spurt. Deal with it. Be patient and don’t give up on breastfeeding. These are the times when you get desperate and seek help and support.     Hi Payal, my daughter is 21/2 months old, 15 days back I have diagnosed that acute cholecystitis. According to this what diet should I avoid and take for mother feed as well as my present condition.
    Give me a suggestion dr advised to lessen my fat intake is these diet can affect my baby. She s not gaining much weight also.

      is she only on breast feed ? your diet will really not affect the breast milk in relation to her problem . it is only her direct food intake that needs to be monitored . just give her an over all low fat items.

    Hi Paula,

    Request you to please suggest diet chart for me ( my weight is 85) and my baby who is 9 months weight 9.4 kgs…he is on breastfeed as well as on semisolid diet….though he eat khicdi daliya puffed rice fruits at…but needs milk 4-5 times at night….ealier he had lactose intolerance so doctors suggested me to give him top feed lactose free but he didn’t like d same n was exclusively on breast feed….now he poop 2 a day but still his poo is green with sour smell…otherwise he is happy active child….

    Please suggest diet charts for both of us

    hi mam,
    My.daughter is 2 month 20 day old with weight 4.6kg.her birth weight was 2.5 kg. My inlaws always says baby is cranky and fussy as she is not getting enough milk.my supply is good with let down. She sucks milk not more than 5 mints..sometimes she sleeps while feeding sometimes she refuses or sometime she showing yak like trying to vomit. Her mouth area is whitish..but not like cheesy. Is she is having thrush or really she is hungry, I dont understand. Please help.

      Hi Arpita ,

      Normally a 2 month old baby needs around 50 – 60 ml milk on an average , of you have a breast pump , try to see what her regular intake is , and you will know if the milk supply is sufficient . About the white thing , i cant comment unless i see it . if she has a vomiting sensation , that could be due to over feeding too . To solve most of your problem , you need to see her normal consumption .

    Hi mam…. My baby girl is 4 months old…birth weight was 2.7 and she is 5.0 now… She is nt putting on weight… She is looking thin and im eating all the above items u have mentioned… (Not as per chart but eating all items)… Y it is like tat… Y my baby is thin…

      I dont think there is any thing to worry about , once every month or 2 months , the baby undergoes a growth spree , where , they gain their height , and the weight remains constant . it is during this phase that the baby mite look thin to you , but this is temporary and the baby gains weight in 10 days … your should wait for a week. and dont panic , continue the healthy eating.

    Hey mam, i’m a mother of 13 months baby n still having breastfeeding during night n 4-5 times in a day. He eats other food too but mostly depends on me. During his illness he completely depends on me. Either i lacting enough or not.I looses so much weight. Suggest me how to increase weight and get rid of son’s breastfeeding habbit.

    I have went through C-section delivery on 22 sept 2017. Shall I follow the above diet chart.
    and more question Shall I include Ghee in my diet or not.

    Please help.

      Hi Suman ,

      the above mentioned diet will help in lactation . for heel pain , if it is side of the heels , you need to see a doctor . it caould be planter fascitis or something . have you been taking your calcium and Vitamin D supplements ? post delivery , these levells go down and pain may occur. see an artho. the weakness too could be due to iron or calcium deficiency. If you are already on supplements and still feeling weak , then you can include ayurvedic syuro , dashmolarisht . this really helps in weakness problem .

    i am sushma. i am blessed with a baby boy on june 2017 its been 4 months.. i had cesarean, i was fat from before.. i was 67kilo before now after birth i am weighing 70.
    1. i want to reduce my weight, i want to start yoga but as it is cesarean can i start? is there any alternative?
    2. i want to go on healthy diet, which is good, is it safe to change my diet as i eat lots of chips, chocolates every day. i know its bad but, i cant control.
    i am 23 years old. 4.8 is my height.. please suggest:)

    Hi Payal,
    I am a mom of 2 boys. One is 3yrs old and anothr is 3 months old.
    I had good supply of milk for my first child. But for my 2nd child, i dnt have the same. Even though am having cooked sprouted fenugreek seeds to increase milk supply , its not consistent.

    I breast fed my older child for almost 2 yrs and want to do the same for my younger child too.
    Pls help

      please include the following tips to help in hard stools

      1] drink plenty of water and other fluids .
      2] eat apple with the peel , atleast 1 -2 per day .
      3] try having isabghol in your milk every night . this will help in softening your stools and painless and easy defecation .

    hi Payal I just delivere twins daughters 15 days back .but I am not getting milk in breast getting very little milk that is very little drops hence I have to start lactogen . both my baby are per mature by one month. plus my apptiet is very not at all feeling hungry. please suggests what should do to get ample milk for my babies

      Hi Harjeet ,
      dont stress . stress is the main hindering factor . you can have the following foods to increase milk production :

      1] hot soups of palak + parval + ridgegourd
      2] eat orange masoor dal instead of regular dals .
      3] eat garlic it helps in faster recovery and good milk production
      4] eat roasted fennel and til seeds mixture 4-5 times a day (1-2 tsp).
      5] eat soaked badaam .
      6] drnk artleast 3 glasses of milk every day .

    This is Dolly here. My baby is a preemie of 7month and 13days..when he cries I feed him but he is not feeding enough milk.. He sleeps after 3-4 minutes.. I m worried what to do?

      Hi Dolly ,

      you need to set a timetable . dont wait for him to cry and signal you that he is hungry . these many month old kids need to be fed every 1.5 to 2 hours , so set a reminder in your mobile of 1.5 hours from the first feed , and try to feed him when the reminder buzzes .. and see if this helps.

    Am having 3 year old boy baby, from the birth itself he s getting very very lose stools but he s healthy and his birth weight is 3.150 gms and nw 6 but am worried y his stรฒols r so watery. I asked t doc he said is not a problem but am little worried.(say some remedy mam)
    And can i hav chikkos while feeding r it may cause cold for my baby.

      try eating apple with peel and guava with peel . these 2 fruits have natural pectin. and help in binding lose stools . so you can try this.

      if the weather is cold , then avoid chikku .

    I’m sumi,am a mother of 9 weeks old baby boy. my pre pregnancy weight is 49 and i gained nearly 15 kgs during my pregnancy. now my weight is 57 kgs. am a lactating mom. i had a 27 hours of normal labour. during my delivery i heard heavy bone cracking sound on my lower back and spine. doctor suggest me to consult DGO after 45 days and doctor said you are normal and get on exercises. yet am suffering with lower back pain. any special diet for back pain healing ? please do help me. my days are getting so worse .

      Hi Sumathi ,

      back ache is a common issue after delivery . are you getting back massages done ? please get it , this will help you more than any other thing . the pain will start subsiding . you will have to include foods that provide more calcium and vit D . so start taking a lot of milk , ragi , seame seeds , khuskhus seeds , dry coconut , egg with yolks. , and other milk item .

    Hi payal. I m mother of a 1 month 6 days old baby girl.. her weight is 3.2kgs currently. Dctr said she is under weight. What food can I include in my diet to provide her proper nutrition n to make her gain weight. Actly my mother in law follows her traditional diet n m mostly fed on laddus n no fruits are given which according to her are all cold… Pls suggest what to have for proper nutritious diet post pregnancy…

      Hi Kavita , at 1month and 6 days , you can now start including some fruits like apple , and pomogranate in your food. i hope you are having almonds . that is beneficial too. dont wory , most babies lose weight in the forst month and they slowly cover uo and gain weight in another 15 days time. there is nothing tio be worried , just eat healthy , like what is mentioned in the diet plan above .

    I saw this web while searching regarding peanut intake by mother effects the 2month baby . I am a mother of two children and my little one is 2 month now. I feel if I eat peanut and feed brestmilk to baby he struggled to drink the milk. He start to cry because of tommy pain and gas.
    Please suggest me do I need to stop eating peanut or any other solutions are there?

      yes , you should stop eating peanuts for now , introduce it in your diet after may be a month . but for now you can payse the intake of peanuts / groundnuts.

      she has just delivered a baby , 13 days back , and you are calling her fatty . please understand that the body remain swollen for some days after delivery . she will settle down in a month or 2 . lactating the baby will help her in etting back to shape .

      Bbaies need to be breast fed exclusively till they are 6 months old . you can have all fruits and dryfruits now , just dont over eat any of it . or it will result in lose motions in the baby

      dont worry , just eat healthy and drink plenty of water … think positive , all this will help you in increasing your milk supply. try to feed him as much as possible . the sucking reflex increases the milk supply . so no matter what you feel you continue to breast feed .

    Hi Payal,

    My baby is 2 months and 15 days old. I am breastfeeding and also giving formula milk. My weight became stagnant at 84 post pregnancy. However I am doing yoga with Surya namaskar for 30min starting from 3 Rd month. My diet includes currently 2 dosas for bf, one glass of milk for mid bf, Rice + Dal+subji+curd for lunch, Evening 1 cup of tea+ 1 biscuit, After 1 hour milk 1 glass and at 10 pm Rice n sabji for dinner. However with the above diet n 30 min rigorous workout from past 20 days my weight was stagnant. I am depressed. Can you please suggest me in losing weight while breastfeeding .

      increase your workout timings to 45 mins instead of 30 mins . cut the rice , have daliya , roti oats . etc , no fruits in your diet ..

    Hi Mam, I am a breastfeeding mother , I have 3 months old boy kid. I have below listed few doubts please give me some remedies.
    1. He is too gassy . I am having hink n jeera daily.
    2. He is getting rashes on n off ( especially on face n around neck) I am using almond oil before bath. Galenco body wash. I stopped eating nuts too.
    3. I am drinking lemon n honey with water in the morning, and I m craving chocolates after my meal .will these affects my little one in anyway ?

      1] hing and zeera is gud . watch other foods you eat there must be something in your diet that is not suiting him .. check for urad dal items , say idli … or channa dal , sprouts , channa, chola , rajma ,

      2] a doctor has to check this .. may be the oil is not suiting him .. or the cream that you are using …

      3] dont feed him immediately after lemon water … choclates wil not matter much if you use only a piece , normally dark chocolates have caffeeie which reaches the baby through milk and may affect on the long run .. the babies become hyperactive and sleep less .

      if you are breastfeeding your baby , you will have to watch the food you eat … try to avoid the foods mentioned as avoid or restriced in the abpve mentioned article . a breastfeeded baby;’s digestion is weak and the symptoms mostly depends on what the mum eats . try to avoid urad and channa dal , chaanna chola , rajma , it will cause trouble to both of you . eat simple and easy to digest food .

    My doc and the paediatrician told me that i can eat anything i want. However my baby is very gassy and passes poop almost 20 times a day– a little bit whenever she passes wind. She is unable to sleep because of the constant urge to poop. Every feed is followed by an hour of crying and severe wind passing. Please help!

      stick to simple phulka and mung dal diet for a bit .. if she faces problem even with this , then she has colic … please give her gripe water . also add hing to your food while cooking. it will help . eat fresh and hot food .

      iron tablet at night with a glass of warm lemon water (just 3-4 drops of lemon, avoid if baby is below 4 months ) and calcium tablets in the morning with a glass of milk .
