These are space or ether (Akasha), air (Vayu), fire (Agni), water (Jala) and earth (Prithivi).

Ayurveda Dosha

Ayurveda believes body has three regulating forces of nature. These five elements combine in pairs to form the three forces that regulate the body. Balancing these forces is of utmost important for a healthy body. These three forces are vata, pitta and kapha.

  • Vata (space and air): People with dominant vata are usually slim, energetic, and creative. These people have trouble sleeping, irregular appetite, prone to digestive issues and poor circulation.
  • Kapha (water and earth): People with dominant kapha are strong, thick-boned, and caring. They are more prone to gain weight, slow metabolism, sluggishness, over-sleeping, breathing issues, and higher risk of heart disease. Read – How to balance Kapha dosha.
  • Pitta (fire and water): People having dominant pitta have a muscular build, are athletic, competitive and strong leaders. They have quick metabolism, good circulation, healthy skin and hair. But they tend to be always hungry, prone to acne, inflammation and gain weight.
  • Know your dominant Dosha.

Symptoms of Pitta Dosha Imbalance In Body 

  • GI disorder: Upset stomach, heartburn and diarrheas’, polyphagia, as well as excessive thirst.
  • Hyperacidity: There is excess acid secretion leading to excess hunger and hence, weight gain.
  • Emotionally sensitive: This leads to constant headache and inflammation, strong anger as well as agitated response.
  • Metabolism imbalance: Hormonal imbalance, insomnia, yellow smelly urine, acne, skin rashes, more prone to infections as well as liver issues.
  • Body temperature: Body always feels Warm and temperature remains high. Excessive perspiration and hence prone to fevers.

Causes  of Pitta Dosha 

  • Emotional strain or anger or stress.
  • High temperatures, long hours of exposure to sun.
  • Excessive alcohol and coffee consumption.
  • Eating foods that promote pitta like meat consumption, sour, spicy, fried or processed as well as refined foods.
  • Excess refined sugar and flour consumption.
  • Lack of sleep.
  • Inactivity.

How to Balance Pitta Dosha ?

Here are some tips that will help to balance Pitta Dosha.

  • Keep your mind busy with challenges.
  • Meditate everyday.
  • Keep yourself relaxed at all times.
  • Adequate sleep is very important.
  • One must adapt a healthy lifestyle to promote weight loss.
  • Appropriate diet.
  • Eat at regular intervals.
  • Check your caloric intake along with the composition.
  • Consume at least three square meals as well as a small snack in between meals.
  • Concentrate on food and refrain from using phones and television during this time to avoid over eating.
  • Avoid excessively spicy, salty as well as oily foods.
  • Detox your body regularly using fruits and vegetables.
  • Drink at least 3 liters of water as well as improve over all liquid intake.

Pitta Dosha Diet ( Pitta Dosha Food list)

Foods that will help body to cool down are included here. Emphasize more on foods that are bitter, sweet and astringent in taste to balance your pitta. Here is a food list for pitta dosha.

Foods to Eat to Balance Pitta Dosha:

  • Cereals:

Opt for whole grains, whole grain flours, barley, oats, basmati rice, broken wheat as well as quinoa. Make sure to consume low GI cereals that will not only control the acid secretion, but also help in weight loss.

  • Pulses and dals:

Include dals, lentils, sprouts as well as pulses. Avoid creamy and heavily seasoned pulses as it may aggravate pitta and also lead to weight gain.

  • Fiber:

Fiber inclusion assures that you have a healthy gut as well as correct acid balance . It  helps in weight loss   by helping you avoid overeating. Include whole grains, fruits and vegetables.

  • Vegetables:

Opt for sweet bitter vegetables like gourd vegetables, asparagus, cabbage, cucumber, cauliflower, green beans, lettuce, peas, potatoes, sprouts as well as mushrooms.

  • Fruits:

Fruits like apples, avocados, figs, melons, oranges, pears, plums, pomegranates as well as mangoes helps to  balance pitta. Consume whole fruits rather than juices or dried fruits. This will also help in weight loss.

  • Milk and Dairy Products:

Go for low fat milk and products. Consume low fat homemade paneer, unsalted butter, limited amounts of ghee as well as cheese.

  • Eggs:

Its best to adhere to a vegetarian diet. However, you can include egg whites in your meals.

  • Visible fats:

Use oil as per the requirement of the body in limited quantities. Use groundnut oil, olive oil, sunflower oil or coconut oil. Cold press oil versions are also a good option. Read- Best oil for cooking. 

  • Spices:

Use mildly flavored spices like cinnamon, turmeric, cardamom, fennel or black pepper that do not add on to pitta Dosha.

  • Sugar substitute:

Avoid refined sugars. Replace your sugar with organic jaggery or honey.

  • Cooling agents:

To reduce pitta cooling herbs like cilantro, coriander, cumin, fennel, mint, lime juice etc. are advised. Add avocados in the diet to balance the pitta dosha.

  

Foods to Avoid to Balance Pitta Dosha:

Avoid foods that aggravate pitta as well as those who increase acid secretion or lead to weight gain.

  • Sweets and desserts: Refined sugars not only aggravate pitta but also lead to weight gain. Avoid any sweet, confectionery, bakery products, desserts, creamy shakes or sugary juices.
  • Oily foods: Avoid deep fried foods, creamy gravies, as well as foods that are high in saturated fats and trans fats.
  • Processed foods: Avoid processed and junk food. Such foods not only increase pitta in your body, but also lead to weight gain.
  • Meat: Non vegetarian foods tend to increase pitta as well as they lead to Dosha imbalance. Avoid poultry, seafoods as well as red meat.
  • Beverages: Avoid alcohol consumption, excessive coffee, as well as caffeine containing products.

Pitta Dosha Diet Plan

Here is a  1 day sample of Pitta dosha diet plan.

Sample diet chart:

Early morning:

1 cup Saunf soaked water +

5 – 7 soaked black resins OR  2 Dates.

Breakfast:

1 cup Herbal milk (Mint + Ginger + lemongrass + Milk) +

2 – 3 small size Oats vegetable Idlis with Coconut chutney and 1 cup Sambar OR,

1 Cup Oats and nuts porridge OR ,

5 pcs Rawa Dhokla with green mint coriander chutney.

Mid-morning:

1 Medium size Fruit (Any 1 from the list given above).

Lunch:

1 cup Salad + 2 Chapati + ½ cup brown rice + 1 cup Vegetables + 1 cup dal + 1 glass buttermilk.

Mid-afternoon:

1 cup Green tea OR ,

Ginger tea OR,

Cinnamon tea.

Evening:

1 Cup Elaichi Milk +

2 Khakras  OR,

1 cup Vegetable Poha /Upma.

Dinner:

1 cup Vegetable soup + 1 Millet roti or Multigrain Roti OR 1½ cup Khichdi / Daliya  +

1 cup green Vegetable + 1 cup kadhi .

Bedtime:

1 cup Turmeric honey milk (no sugar).

Ayurveda says imbalance in vata, kapha and pitta leads to health problems. Adapt to a healthy lifestyle along with clean eating habits to control your pitta. Foods that have cooling effects on body aid in reducing pitta. A watch on caloric intake and composition of food will help in weight reduction.
