South Indian Diet Plan for Weight Loss (1200 calories)

Last Updated on February 19, 2020 | RD, Payal Banka (Registered Dietitian) 630 Comments

South Indian Diet Plan for Weight Loss – You might just laugh out loud. The titillating aromas of sambars and rasams can actually kill your desire for weight loss. South Indian cuisine is as rich as a Kanjivaram saree. But this richness will add on to the waist size of each saree wearer.

The healthier side of the traditional south Indian platter consists of a variety of koshimbiri, which nowadays is as sidelined as its position on the banana leaf. But nothing is impossible if you make up your mind. So here is a 1200 calorie South Indian Diet Plan for Weight Loss.

For eg., you can replace bhendekai gojju with brinjal/onion/tomato, etc., whichever vegetable you desire. Stick to the basic recipes of koshimbir and add varieties so that you don’t get bored with the plan. Do read on how you can lose weight effectively.

How to make a personalized south Indian diet plan for weight loss?

To make a south Indian diet plan for yourself, follow the following steps

  • Calculate your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) to know your basic calorie requirement.
  • Calculate your BMI to know how over-weight you are and how much you really need to lose to be healthy.
  • Analyze your body stats

These indicators will help you figure out a realistic goal. It is not healthy for any woman to aim at reaching 50 kg without a proper plan. 50 may not be healthy for you. The right weight will depend on your body built, your height, your activity levels, and your lifestyles.  I hope this south Indian diet plan for weight loss helps you in achieving your goals. All the best.

    Hi Payal

How are you .after long time .i am here to discuss .

1 I notice for past few months suddenly i get gas ,bloating and even i eat less .stomach seems very full and also constipation is present . can it be constipation which is causing this ?

2 My food habits are normal and simple veg food . with little quantity .yet once i eat anything such as potato ,pongal ,nuts ,badams ,or milk related or samosa ,etc .few i named stomach does get upset .what could be reason. i eat now a days only curd rice and rasam rice morning .afternoon – lemon rice and dinner – curd rice .earlier i was fine .this started only say 6 months etc .

3 my guess is i skip breakfast and eat lunch .and i starve from night 11 till morning 11 on week ends only .from school days .could this be reason for this affecting now ?

4 what are the remedies you suggest to make my digestive system excellent and to maintain it lifelong .

looking forward for your answers pls .

happy belated navarthiri to you and your family payal .,god bless u ,

      Hi ,

      1. yes constipation can cause all this. take a glass of milk with isabghol at night .

      2. are you taking enough vitamin c ? warm water and lemon ? less fat or no fat in food can also cause sluggish bowels. you need to add fiber Nand residueto your diet

      3. yes

      4. suggested in earlier comments

    Hi!
I am happy to see your blog! Very useful guidance for weight loss seekers like me. I could go through diet plans mentioned by you, and found that no dal is included in any of them.
So dal should be eliminated while losing weight, right?
Can one have moong sprouts and buttermilk(curd) for breakfast?
    Thank you,

      Hi Shobha,

we are glad you like our work. Its not that you need to avoid dal . actually the diet plans on dietburrp is a 1 day diet for reference and hence i could not include all the items in that 1 day chart . dals are obviously important specially for all vegetarians who have restricted source of protein intake . yes you can include sprouts and curd items anytime through out the day.

    1. I heard and read corn flakes jas sugar content.. can you please hèlp the right brand we need to purchase. . We buy kellogs almonds and honey along with museli which contains fruits. Is that good?
    2. Is consuming green tea more than 2 or 3 cups a day harmful?
3.also any recommendations for mom who is 55 for tummy exercise particularly? Now she appears to be stagnant. .
4.is it good to have any fruit juice without sugar before workout as i will be very hungry?

Please help me with answers. .

      Hi Divya ,

yes ofcourse i remember . and i will mail you soon about the consultation. for now , here are your answers .

1] yes ofcourse honey almond has carb content. you can buy simple bran flakes or plain corn flakes. or just buy regular museli with nuts. and add some fresh fruits to any of them.

2] no , you can have upto 5 – 6 cups if it is not very concentrated. green tea is harmful in certain conditions. hence we scrutinize every possibility before prescribing the number of cups.

3] ya if her core and hand muscles are stong, she can do some usual planks and abs . but you need to do it and check if she is really comfortable. continue only then.

4] pre workout meals are very important if you are properly gyming or doing combi workouts. please read our article on pre workout nutrition for more info.

      Hi Vijay,

all you need is a little motivation . involve a family member with you in your goal , or go for walk with a friends who shares similar interest , when you follow the routine along with a weight loss buddy , you will stay on with your goal for longer and feel energetic to exercise and eat healthy .

    Hi,

Thanks for the diet plan. On your diet plan you have recommended that we walk for 10-15min after every meal. But, I have been told that although walking is not a intense exercise it will cause your stomach contents to slosh around which will leave you feeling sick. Also, some people it might cause some indigestion as well. I want to know whether these are all true??

    Thanks in Advance!

the 10 mins walk after food is a medium / slow walk to help u in better digestion , this is not for weight loss. it will rather improve your digestion and help your body tackle all the roughage you woud be eating.

    Hai Payal,

Lemon with warm water is best for weight loss but i heard that consuming more of it causes heartburn & sensitive teeth. I just want to know whether it is alright to have once in a day? or still it causes those side effects if it was consumed daily. Please help

      Hi Suganya,

it may cause these problems, but its not true in case of every individual. it suits some , while it causes problem in some , so moderation is the key . the lemon water you have should not be very concentrated. if you have heart burn or acidity issues, do not have lemon water on empty stomach . start your day with a fruit in that case .

Hi Payal how are you hope you are good by god grace .Please help me in below important queries.

I checked my weight its 88.5 kgs as on today May 10 2015 . i am eating normal .diet stopped will start soon .between one imp doubt .i feel sudden my bowel movements are little messy though it could be present few years .now a days bowel movements are little hard and it takes 2o to 25 mins to release .is it normal or signs of constipation .want to check with you on this .
this has happened after i left my diet i guess .

2 I want to know starvation or non eating breakfast will it cause constipation and please let me known i am not getting hungry once i eat direct meals at 11 am till 4 pm and then if i eat anything say light oily item say bonda ,etc i do not get hungry till 9 pm and then i eat rice at 9 pm and sleep at 12- can this be reason for constipation .? i feel my digestion is slow .- please provide your thoughts .

3 Any remedies if the above signs are constipation – i am drinking lot of water .and apart from this any suggestions to permanently cure this .

4 does walking daily for one hour increase my metabolism rate and will speed up my digestive power

5 I will start my fresh diet soon .- Please share me thoughts on the above mentioned points along with my previous queries on ice cream- if i can eat ice cream such as vanilla or pista cup ice cream monthly once .

      Hi Prathosh ,

yes i had mentioned in the reply that you can have icecreams if its only 0nce or twice a month . please dont punish yourself , diet does not mean giving up on your favourite food. just have in moderation .

constipation , can be due to missing breakfast , starving or eating less and long gaps of food and less solub le fiber in diet . the reason can be any of these. painful or slow defecation can be a result of less fat / water in the intestine to move the processed waste ahead towards anus. this will be solved by drinking warm water and lemon after dinner , or early morning . another well tried way to solve your problem is consuming isabghol with a glass of milk at night, for a week you can also add 1/2 tsp ghee in this milk. this is the best way to normalize defecation.

Hi Payal Thanks for your tips will follow your inputs .

few small clarifications on constipation and slow digestion

1 Payal i feel that my digestion is slow because when i eat direct 11 am lunch say sambhar rice and curd rice alone .i do not get hungry till 5 pm and then if i eat any snacks say samosa thats all – stomach is full . like wise i feel digestion is slow and most of time even if i eat little i do not get hungry .- is there anything concern or why it happens – ANY TIPS PLS

2 Constipated body means does that mean i wont be able to eat normal way .

bec if i eat white chutney ,potato or aloo paratha or noodles – immediate stomach feeling is like little messy and sensation of motion .but motion does not go i have watched numerous times – how is this happening .why my body is not accepting these .even if i take little – is it for everyone or only for me .

3 I am planning to eat every 2 hrs slowly to improve my digestion and remove constipation first and then will eat normally – is that gud idea .your suggestions .

4 Payal last and final .what i feel is constipated irregular bowel movements hard stool daily 20 to 25 mts .and this being habitual for years has damaged the stomach and this cant be changed by one day eating should continue for month or so to see changes .am i right payal .

        please share your inputs

        Thanks

Hi , 2 soluutions for your problem ,

          1. eat only healthy food at 2-3 hours interval , even if the quantity is little, its ok. but eat. include nmore fiber through whole grains and fruits .

          2. start having isabghol at night with 1 glass warm milk and 1 tsp ghee for getting rid of constipation and for soft bowels.

Hi Payal Thanks for your valuable suggestions .

I have certain general queries .

1 I am experiencing hard stools whenever i release bowels for past 2 or 3 months little mildly .not that it was not there previously but earlier it was not this much .but now little i feel its hard .- is this clear cut constipation ? and also feeling bowel incomplete after emptying .

2 Whenever i eat potato or white chutney stomach is not accepting and gas happens . what could be reason for this .

3 Now I have got little fear on this constipation as it is making me to sit 20 to 25 mts per day for bowels and later it comes with some straining in hard stool – can this be permanently cured .

I am planning to re think my food habits and change to cure this completely by your tips and solutions whatever you had given me .

Last and final question is – how is it possible that few people bowel movements are good despite they do no activity and eat at any irregular patterns and their body is accepting .?????

            Pls clear my queries .

            Thanks

1] check your water intake . you can take isabghol with a glass of milk at night to ease this.

2] your body is not able to digest these carbs.

3] Lol , i wish i knew … there are a lot of factor that decide digestion and stomach compatibility with various foods. those who take a lot of greasy foods , have well lubricated vessels, and hence the passage of food from stomach to instestine is smooth and good. but those on diet , completly give up on fat intake , which migth lead to difficulty in passage of food. hence a sensible person never gives up on any food wheather good or bad completly … excess of anything and everything is bad . moderation is the key .

Very informative article on Indian diets for those who want to be careful in their weights. What is important here is one has to stick to the plan regularly. The thing about taking food every two hours to maintain weight may be okay for those who need not go out for their livelihood but it is a problem for majority of people who work in offices and in other institutions.

      Hi Shwetha,

whenever you over eat , just make sure that you do your exercises right on the day and the next day . have the other 2 meals of the day very light . and if you are going out on dinner, just take a 15 – 20 mins walk before you sleep . and take a cup of warm water with lemon before you sleep.

weight management is the key to pcod. try to do that effectively and your medicines would be reduced.

      Hi Naviena,

1st thing , please explain your sister that losing 15 kgs in a month is not a realistic goal . and knowing the fact that she has an underactive thyroid, she should aim for 2-3 kgs weight loss in a month . so within 6 months , she would be at her ideal weight.

i would love to be of help to her and plan a diet for her. please see this page for details – https://www.dietburrp.com/diet-services/

      Hi Prathosh ,

yes you can have ice creame if you balance it out with other food like you mentioned. whatever you do , just dont eat cornetto or icecream and biscuit sandwiches , as they are not really icecream but only creame (if you put cornetto in sun , it will not melt , bcoz its only whipped cream ) it will make yuou gain a lot of fats.

best is have ice dolly, or you can make icecream at home , by adding real fruits to your milk , or simpler , just make a milkshakr and freeze it . you can have ice cream, in short

      Hi Suganya,

be patient dear. your littl one is only 2 months old and feeds on you , if you do any diet, it will affect his health . so its best to wait for another 6-7 months till you start top feeds for your baby and then go on diets. till then you can start walking ffor 30 mins for this month and increase it to 45 mins from next month . this will also help in losing weight , without affecting baby’s health.
