Lady finger (Okra) has been a part of Indian cuisine for ages. Its rich fiber content is what mainly contributes to its benefits. Scroll down to know more about the nutrients and health benefits of lady finger (Bhindi).

Nutrients in Lady finger (Bhindi):

Following are the nutrients that contribute to the benefits of lady finger (Bhindi).

  • Dietary fiber (9 % ).
  • Folate.
  • Pyridoxine.
  • Thiamine.
  • Vitamin C, Vitamin A, and Vitamin K.
  • Copper, Calcium, and Potassium. As well as Iron, Magnesium, Manganese, Zinc, and Phosphorus.

Benefits of Lady Finger (Bhindi):

1. Bhindi helps in  Weight Loss:

The low-calorie content of Okra (30 kcal / 100 gm),  make it a suitable food for weight loss. It provides minimum calories. Also, Bhindi has high fiber levels. This helps in keeping you full for longer.

2. Bhindi helps in Heart disease;

Okra contains soluble fiber pectin. Pectin helps in lowering bad cholesterol as well as prevents atherosclerosis. Lady Finger helps in the elimination of deposited cholesterol and clots.

3. Lady finger Controls blood sugar levels:

This benefit of lady finger (Bhindi) may be attributed to its fiber content. Eugenol a type of fiber, helps in slowing down digestion and absorption of sugar from the bloodstream. Hence it helps in avoiding sugar spikes after the meal and stabilizes the blood sugar levels. Its fiber further helps in lowering blood sugar levels.

4. Lady finger Improves digestion:

The fiber content of lady finger helps in better digestion and regularization of bowels. Pectin swells up in the intestine and helps in easier elimination of waste from the intestine. People suffering from constipation benefit from regular consumption of lady finger.

5. Lady Finger helps in Conception and pregnancy:

Lady finger (Bhindi) is an absolutely essential food for ladies who are trying to conceive. Okra contains folic acid/folate. Folate not only helps in conceiving but also helps in the development of the fetus. Bhindi also helps in the prevention of miscarriage. Folate helps in the formation of neural tubes of the fetus.

      yes . it is a fibrous vegetable and you can use it in your weight loss diet. However , you must understand ,that eating bhindi alone for weight loss will not do any magic. it has to be a good healthy lifestyle combo where you workout and eat right diet

      Yes ofcourse . you can . this is a home remedy . but this alone will not help in losing weight . you need to follow a low calorie diet and also workout for atleast 45 mins to be able to lose weight.

    Apologies It will be every second month in my last post. Also to Add on which vegetable are good for Protein, calcium, increase blood cells, rich of Vitamin C. Currently in my diet I am having Broccoli, carrot, beat root, capsicum, Green chili,Pumpkin seeds, lettuce, dal all varieties, Lady finger, Palak on my food habits basis I want to know more about rich vegetables on which i can prepare juices as I am Vegetarian.     Hi I am Rahul 32 year old , I usually change my diet every second from Steam food to Cook food and doing this from last couple of years. I can see no medical and health problems as such. Can I go with making juices of all vegetable daily in my meal instead of Steam and cook. Want to save my cooking time faster, easier and Healthy .Kindly suggest or any side effects if I go with that.     Is it beneficial to use for those peoples who have low sperm count, If yes, Then how (please advice recipe).
    I heard this is more beneficial when keep raw ladyfinger dip in milk for whole night and then drink empty stomach during early morning.

      Thank you for reading at Dietburrp. To be accurate, bhindi / Lady finger improves over all sexual health and stamina in males . But scientifically there are not much evidences that prove that bhindi will improve one’s sperm count .

      Although our rich Indian culture remedies claim that lady finger soaked in milk or water over night , and then drinking this milk / water does improve sperm count . so you can definitely try . But make sure you do this for atleast 45 days to see if it helps . Sorry , but to be frank , im not sure if this will work 100 % as there is not much scientific background for the same . But give it a try .

      Hi Sheela ,

      depends upon the purpose behind supplementing okra in your food . if at all you are seeking benefits of okra in diabetes and cardiac ailment , then fried okra will do more harm than good . hence is it best to avoid fried akra , you can have it in steamed form. okra loses some of its B vitamin and C vitamin after it is fried.

      all veggies and fruits contain little or more amount of potassium. May i know in what regards you are looking for potassium free thing ? there is a process called leaching and blanching , which helps in removing the potassium from these veggies.

    I am 89 years old and suffering from constipation problem from last several years, but more particularly from past 4years when I was operated for BY=PASS SURGERY.
    BY PASS SURGERY went well and I am eating light Indian food with 1 chapatti, dal and lot of vegetables and seasonal fruits being vegetarian.
    I have history of constipation and recently treated by GASTROTOLOGIST after CTSCAN AND TREATMENT OF LAXOPEG (POLETHYLENE GLYCOL 3350.It did cure for some period but presently I had to discontinue and taking only YUSUF GOL KI BHUSI which curse some time but some time it will cause hard stool,and I had to use lot of pressure for passing stool.
    Accidently, I used OKRA-(LADIES FINGER) for past 2 weeks and it gave very smooth TIMELY stool.But again its effect is reducing.I am taking OKRA morning evening along with other vegetables. I am very active with morning evening exercising and walks-weighs 61 kg, height 5’6″
    I request for your remedy for my constipation by supplying my DIET PLAN.And if need be medication.
    I still maintain my morning -evening walking plus gym programs strictly,but constipation is real problem. NO SUGAR.B.P. CONTROLED BY MEDICATION.

    Hello, i’m 22 years old, female with 70kgs. Of weight and 5’3″ of height based on my BMI it indicates that i am overweight. Is lady finger really helps to loose weight? How if the lady finger is not fresh, but still good in looking, is it okay to use it? Thank you

      yes it helps in weight loss . yes it is ok to use . if the lady finger is not very fresh , you soak it in water for some time , it becomes fresh and crunchy soon

    Respected Mam,

    My name is Vyas Kr from Bokaro Steel City. Mam , My age is 48 years old and weight is 70 Kg. Last two years my sugar level crossed the maximum limit of 110 mg and it varies from 110 to 160 in fasting and PP remains 139. During this period i never took alopathic medicine . I used ayurvredic medicine like madhunashnini Vati of Patanjali and natural Bhindi extract to curb the sugar level to 109 mg . But my problem is that my health is deteriorating day by day. All lab test like thyroid, cretnine test, urine test done and found OK. but cholesterol and uric test it is below the level. Please suggest me healthy diet or other remedies so that i can maintain my body weight and strength.
