Lady finger (Okra) has been a part of Indian cuisine for ages. Its rich fiber content is what mainly contributes to its benefits. Scroll down to know more about the nutrients and health benefits of lady finger (Bhindi).

Nutrients in Lady finger (Bhindi):

Following are the nutrients that contribute to the benefits of lady finger (Bhindi).

  • Dietary fiber (9 % ).
  • Folate.
  • Pyridoxine.
  • Thiamine.
  • Vitamin C, Vitamin A, and Vitamin K.
  • Copper, Calcium, and Potassium. As well as Iron, Magnesium, Manganese, Zinc, and Phosphorus.

Benefits of Lady Finger (Bhindi):

1. Bhindi helps in  Weight Loss:

The low-calorie content of Okra (30 kcal / 100 gm),  make it a suitable food for weight loss. It provides minimum calories. Also, Bhindi has high fiber levels. This helps in keeping you full for longer.

2. Bhindi helps in Heart disease;

Okra contains soluble fiber pectin. Pectin helps in lowering bad cholesterol as well as prevents atherosclerosis. Lady Finger helps in the elimination of deposited cholesterol and clots.

3. Lady finger Controls blood sugar levels:

This benefit of lady finger (Bhindi) may be attributed to its fiber content. Eugenol a type of fiber, helps in slowing down digestion and absorption of sugar from the bloodstream. Hence it helps in avoiding sugar spikes after the meal and stabilizes the blood sugar levels. Its fiber further helps in lowering blood sugar levels.

4. Lady finger Improves digestion:

The fiber content of lady finger helps in better digestion and regularization of bowels. Pectin swells up in the intestine and helps in easier elimination of waste from the intestine. People suffering from constipation benefit from regular consumption of lady finger.

5. Lady Finger helps in Conception and pregnancy:

Lady finger (Bhindi) is an absolutely essential food for ladies who are trying to conceive. Okra contains folic acid/folate. Folate not only helps in conceiving but also helps in the development of the fetus. Bhindi also helps in the prevention of miscarriage. Folate helps in the formation of neural tubes of the fetus.

    I am 35 yrs old , from past 6 years I am suffering from chronic constipation,dry stools,sluggish bowel movement.lot of medication and therapies,high finer diet tried but still problem persists as a result undergone surgery but still root cause persists…..Can okra soaked overnight will do the needful?…..please suggest

      yes it has helped many , but your case is very severe , im not sure if this will be effective enough for you . so you can try it for a week and see if it relieves your constipation

      try this – take a fresh coconut , and pierce one of its 3 black eye at the top. insert methi seeds in it and cover it up with cello tape . let it rot for 15 days , then break this coconut and scrap all its content in a 500 ml parachute coconut oil in a pan and heat it. after it boils , take a muslin cloth and strain all the contents, use this oil every night for 15 days , you might notice good difference. also if you are under 30s you can try applying ginger juice to the roots and scalp, it strengthen the roots and prevents the hair to fall and also encourages new hair to grow on the scalp. so covering up the hair you have already lost

      Hi Sagar ,

      Lady finger has 80 mg of calcium in 100 gms . you can take it , but for better effects you should consider other food sources that provide much more calcium. include ragi , milk , paneer , curd , sesame seeds in your diet

    I am Non alcoholic enlarge liver. I feel pain and heaviness in stomach. Also have back pain due to it. What all vegetables or foods can help me reducing extra fat and liver size. I got suggestions from doctor for walking and exercise but unable to do so. I am always in tension what would be future it Liver causes more problems. Please suggest.

      The solution lies in providing rest to your liver . so avoid any food that ha fat , no fried food at all .. avoid channa , rajma and heavy items of this sort , eat simple food , have veggies like tou , lauki , pumpkin. eat lot of salads. and fruits . carbs will help you . dont take tention . this will further increase problems. drink plenty of liquids to wash the toxins out

      yes you can use it daily too . for adults there is no limitation , for kids , too much fiber woul be harsh on digestive tract , so use around 5-8 pods every day . (cooked form )

      No . Lady finger consumption does not lead to knee pain . its only a myth. Knee pain may be due to several reasons , being over weight / obese can cause terrible knee pain .

      Hi Jeeva , apply curd and lemon mix on your scalp for 3-4 continous days. if your dandruff is a result of any bacterial or fungal growth on scalp . im afraid , you will have to take help of a dermatologist.

      not much . although a lot of people say it does. but personally i havent seen much benefit of it . and anyways , only 1 thing for weight loss anyways doesnt help . it has to be a good combo of diet and exercise .

    I am 68. Recently diagnosed as diabetic about 8 months back weighing 73 kg, height 5 ft 3 inches. Initially I controlled it with allopathic medicines and there after for the past 6 months I am solely depending on Ayurvedic treatment. I take one tea spoon full of methi dana daily which I have been taking for years together for controlling body weight. In addition I am also taking one tea spoon powder of Haldi, giloy, amla, darchini, jamun seed, karela and mango seed powder maintaining fasting sugar level within 130 and PP sugar level below 200.

    For the past 15 days I started taking bhindi ( okra ) water daily in the morning by soaking 2 bhindi in 4 pcs overnight but I don’t find any improvement. Since the taste of okra water is not pleasant so I am unable to decide whether to continue or not.

    For the past 10 days I have started tingling sensation in the left palm which is a side effect of diabetis so I have again started allopathic treatment to get rid of the tingling problem. Any advice ?

      hello sir ,

      Although the things you have mentioned are helpful in controlling blood sugar , but i will suggest you to not give up on your medications . looking at your age, the diabetes is more age related and hence the side effects or related illness will occur faster as your body will not be able to cope up with the same intensity. hence continue your medications along with these remedies. try to keep your blood sugar near normal .

    Hi mam.. I m 27 years old and I m planning for my first pregnancy.
    I recently had been for a pre conception check up where in the blood test shows vitamin D level 14 which ideally should be 30. My doc told me to take 2000 IUS per day …would this help ? I m taking tablets since 20 days and would try for convening within a month ..can you please suggest to increase vitamin D and how is it related to pregnancy and its effects.

      Vit D is best supplemented through medicine . food wise the absorption is very slow. so for now medications is the best resource. Vit D plays an important role in conception and normal growth of the fetus. but dont worry , as stress will delay conception too . just finish your Vit D cousre of medication and keep trying .       thank you for being so sensible. 15 years is not an age to diet. and i appreciate that you are aware. you should exercise for 45 mins. to be able to lose more weight . have 2 cups of green tea everyday . and eat a lot of fruits.

      any food with folate increases the chances of conception . that is why when you visit a doctor and disclose your will to conceive they give you folate tabs. you can consume okra as a side dish with your meal at both lunch and dinner.
