South Indian Diet Plan for Weight Loss (1200 calories)

Last Updated on February 19, 2020 | RD, Payal Banka (Registered Dietitian) 628 Comments

South Indian Diet Plan for Weight Loss – You might just laugh out loud. The titillating aromas of sambars and rasams can actually kill your desire for weight loss. South Indian cuisine is as rich as a Kanjivaram saree. But this richness will add on to the waist size of each saree wearer.

The healthier side of the traditional south Indian platter consists of a variety of koshimbiri, which nowadays is as sidelined as its position on the banana leaf. But nothing is impossible if you make up your mind. So here is a 1200 calorie South Indian Diet Plan for Weight Loss.

For eg., you can replace bhendekai gojju with brinjal/onion/tomato, etc., whichever vegetable you desire. Stick to the basic recipes of koshimbir and add varieties so that you don’t get bored with the plan. Do read on how you can lose weight effectively.

How to make a personalized south Indian diet plan for weight loss?

To make a south Indian diet plan for yourself, follow the following steps

  • Calculate your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) to know your basic calorie requirement.
  • Calculate your BMI to know how over-weight you are and how much you really need to lose to be healthy.
  • Analyze your body stats

These indicators will help you figure out a realistic goal. It is not healthy for any woman to aim at reaching 50 kg without a proper plan. 50 may not be healthy for you. The right weight will depend on your body built, your height, your activity levels, and your lifestyles.  I hope this south Indian diet plan for weight loss helps you in achieving your goals. All the best.

    Hi Payal,
My diet is a healthy one I think. I start my day with a glass of lukewarm water followed by a cup of oats at around 6 am. I climb stairs to my office which is on the fifth floor. I have a fruit salad at 10:30 am. I have my lunch at 2 pm. Its always three medium sized rotis with veg kurma or sabzi.I rarely take non-veg to my workplace.Evening I have a mint green tea without sugar. Once i reach home i repeat lunch at around 8 pm. I workout for 30 mins in cross trainer. I only have fatty food on Thursdays or Fridays. And I am not someone who eats a lot.Like three rotis can fill my tummy usually. At work I sometimes have coffee with sugar and coffee mate. But that’s just once daily. In spite of following this diet I havent reduced at all. I am 5’1 and 62Kgs. Please advise.

Your body must have gotten used to the exercises and walking you do and now adjusts to whatever little calories you are intakingf. this happens in a lot of cases where despite of all efforts you dont lose a bit. breaking this plateau requires a lot of patience …. here is what you can do …….. exercise wise – stop doing what you are already doing for a week … and then you surprise your body with a new activity .. for ex – you have been walking all these days , so now change your activity to swimming / zumba dancing / skatting / gyming / playing badminton or lawn tennis … whatever suits you best. tai chi and kick boxing and pillates work excellently in such cases., i know its hard to find time and availabilty of such sports around you .. but if you want to get there .. you need to find harder !!

Food wise – surprise your body yet agin by co nsuming food stuffs that you never did .. it changes your metabolic graph and hence makes you lose weight …. ex – if you have been eating wheat and rice as staples so far … dont eat them for an entire week , and consume other cereals like bajra , jowar , or ragi …. this funda has worked superbly with my clients .. you can try and see if it suits you too ..

      Hi Guru ,

yes , you can follow this 1200 calorie diet for 2 weeks and see how much fat weight you lose. also along with this diet you need to do exercises which concentrate more on abdominal muscles. so choose wisely .

      Hi Thaasinn ,

you need exercises more than diet . please follow a 45 – 60 mins of workout routine atleast 6 times a week. along with it you can follow the above mentioned diet . you can replace rice with ragi / fox tail millet dosa / or simple steamed idli too. you can also have 2 small chapati with palya.

      Hi Harini ,

both the diet plans will help , you can select on suitability basis . but i must tell you , unless you add an appropriate workout routine to your day , spot reduction will be difficult. a minimum of 45 mins of workout for 5-6 times a dayconsisting of planks , abs exercises and aerobic workout is essential.

    Hello Payal,

I am 30 years old from Bangalore. I weigh 104kg and am very interested in following your plan. My BMR is 2123 calories per day. Your diet is for 1200 calories. How do I get the remaining calories? Or should I stick o the 1200 calories as suggested by you.
    Please clarify.

      Hi Sreekar,

are you exercising too ? a 45 mins workout will help you long way to lose weight . i think you should follow atleast an 1800 calorie plan to start with . but before you do , you need to first calculate your current calorie intake . if your current calorie intake is upto mark with BMR, then you can start with 1800 calorie diet . but suppose if you are already intaking around 1800 cals per day , then further calorific reduction is required.

the simplelest way to increase the calorie is refer the 1200 calorie diet chart mentioned above . i have purposely mentioned the calories and protein of every single dish with their serving size . do a little maths and increase the quantity of foods mentioned for lunch , dinner and breakfast in such a way that the total calories come to an addition of the required cals . simple as that 🙂

      all the best !

Thanks a lot Payal. Another query. What should be the ideal time gap between each meal? Also, what short eats, in between meals, would you suggest, if I am not able keep up the time? I do walk/jog regularly.

you can keep a gap of 3 hours in between every meal . 2 hours would do to , but it get a little impractical. so check your suitability. for midmeals , you can have roasted channa, roasted soyabean , steamed corn , kadlepuri oograane (puffed rice), fruits or salads , soups , coconut water, green tea with light biscuits . if you had a light meal for lunch , you can also have oats porridge , ragi porridge or 2 idli in the evening.

      Hi Suraj ,

the best way is to carry a lunch box. if it is not practicle , you can opt for idli and sambar , or rawa upama, instead of masala dosa , have plain dosa , or onion dosa and ask them to make in less oil . you can also go for ragi mudde , avarekalu saar with chapati.

firstly increase your walking time to 45 mins . 30 mins is good for maintaining the weight , but it will not help in weight loss. hence work out for atleast 45 – 60 mins . the last 30 mins being the fastest speed . read this – https://www.dietburrp.com/burning-body-fat-for-weight-loss/

      Hi Siva,

i understand you plight dear. but you will have to manage atleast 1 part out of diet / exercises. i know diet is not in your hands and you are entirely dependent on what is served . but i dont believe when you say you cant exercise. there must be some time of the day when you can devote 45 min for walks , joggs , exercises . use that time for weight loss. and trust me , at your age , your body will immediately respond to exercises and you ‘ll start losing weight.

besides this avoid mid time binging . keep fruis and salad veggies like carrots and cucumber handy. when hungry eat thee fruits / salad veggies . these do not require any chopping too .

      Hi,

actually 1200 calories is a general outline for anyone who wants to lose weight . but the exact way of calculating your calories is by calculating your BMR . that is the minimum required calorie . because you are burning 1750 cals , your requirement may be different . you need to calculate it properly and adjust your intake of cals accordingly .
