Thyroid and weight loss; Losing weight with hypothyroidism

Last Updated on August 19, 2021 | RD, Payal Banka (Registered Dietitian) 335 Comments

Thyroid and weight loss have been common problems among women. The thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped organ situated in the middle of the neck. It is one of the largest endocrine glands and helps in the secretion of many hormones, such as thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), and calcitonin, that regulate the metabolism rate of the body.

thyroid and weight loss

Thyroid and weight loss; The relation:

You may be wondering what leads to weight gain during thyroid problems. The thyroid gland regulates the metabolism of the body and it is indirectly related to body weight. When the body enters ” hypothyroidism”, the production of the thyroid hormone decreases, and the body metabolism decreases leading to weight gain. It also causes fluid retention which may lead to added weight. Other factors which add up to the weight gain include, increase in food intake as well as a decrease in physical activity as a result of fatigue and the aging process.

If you too have hypothyroidism and are looking to lose weight, here are some tips for you.

Thyroid and weight loss

Losing weight with hypothyroidism is a challenging task. All those with hypothyroid and weight loss on their mind go for a very low-calorie diet and this may further lower the body’s metabolism. It may worsen the problem and hence a correct approach is needed.

  • Keep a check on your thyroid levels:

Remember the answer to your weight-loss question is solving the reason for weight gain. If you have a thyroid problem and weight loss is your goal, then you must keep a check on your thyroid levels. Take your medications regularly and keep your levels as close to the normal range as possible. Then you will see your weight coming to normal. Either check your thyroid levels every 3-4 months or at least once in 6 months.

  • Increase your activity:

Lowered metabolism is the main hurdle for those struggling with thyroid and weight loss. Increasing the activity levels through exercise will not only help in increasing metabolism but also in losing weight. Increase your activity levels by including a 30-45 minutes exercise session, be it walking, yoga, tai chi, swimming, cycling, or a gym workout. Take the stairs every time you have to climb up or down. A short-medium-paced walk after your meals will be beneficial too.

  • Increase your water and fiber intake:

Hypothyroidism can cause chronic constipation, water retention, and edema. Increasing water and fiber intake will help in regularizing bowel movements. Increased water consumption will also help in flushing out your lymphatic system, further helping water retention problems.

  • Increase ย selenium intake:

To supplement selenium in your diet, include bran, whole wheat, tuna, onions, and tomatoes in your diet.

  • Increase iodine intake:

Increasing iodine intake will help in improving thyroid functions. Eat iodized salt. If your doctor advises, go in for iodine supplements as well.

  • Increase your metabolism:

The key to thyroid and weight loss is increasing your metabolism. Here are some tips on how you can do that.

i] Have 5-6 mini-meals –

Small and frequent meals help in reducing the sugar spikes and balance the blood sugar level. This will help in avoiding hunger pangs. Small frequent meals help by keeping the digestive system on the go. It helps in burning more involuntary calories and prevents the storage of fat.

ii] Green tea –

Drinking green tea will increase the metabolic rate and energy levels. ย Hypothyroidism makes you feel tired and fatigued all the time. Green tea will help in decreasing the stress levels and will give you the most needed energy kick.

iii] Warm water and lemon –

A glass of warm water and lemon early in the morning and after your main meals will help you in keeping the metabolism rate up throughout the day.

Thyroid and weight loss:-

  • Foods to eat: Include a lot of carrots, whole grain cereals, avocado, apricots, fish, asparagus, olive oil, and sunflower seeds.
  • Foods to avoid:ย Eat less broccoli, Lima beans, cabbage, peanuts, sweet potato, mustard, kale, kohlrabi, linseed, and soy products. These foods may interfere with iodine uptake in the body. Don’t cut these foods out completely, just keep these to a minimum. These foods harm when eaten in raw form. However, cooking these foods will destroy the goitrogens and make them safe for consumption. Millets should be consumed in moderation as they may cause inflammation to the thyroid. Pearl millet is best avoided in the thyroid.

Here is a sample diet plan for thyroid and weight loss. Diet plan for weight loss in hypothyroidism.

Whether the excess weight comes from thyroid or other hormonal issues, the key to weight loss is to correct the underlying condition while monitoring your diet, eating the right things and avoiding what’s wrong, and exercising. A healthy lifestyle since the very beginning is the solution to every weight-related problem, including thyroid and weight loss.

      Ji Nitya ,

First of all , if the doctor said that thyroid is cured , you get stress free. dont take tention . just make a point to get your thyroid tested every 3 months to be sure if your hormones are normal inside.

taking too much stress can lead to weight gains . hence please calm down and do the diet and exercises with full dedication , you will definitely get results. if you have doubt about your thyroid levels , go get ypour T4 and TSH checked. and become sure and positive.

    Dear Mrs.Payal,
Thanks for doing such noble service to innumerous users. Your blog is awesome.

We live in USA. My husband, 39 years old, has been suffering from hyperthyroidism (still not sure about the terminology, hypo or hyper). He has lost nearly 16 pounds in the last couple of years without special exercise or restrictive diet. He seems to be losing weight 1/2 to 1 pound every month especially since 2015. He seems to be losing muscle mass which has caused some concern.

    The T4 values have been normal – 1.34 (2015) and 1.35 (2014) based on a standard range of 0.82-1.77 ng/dl. But his TSH is around 6.580 based on a standard range of 0.450 โ€ 4.500 uIU/mL.

He takes levothyroxine – 25 mcg prescribed by his general physician.

We are strict vegeterians. Please suggest the DIET plan for him like “vegetables/fruits” to be taken/avoided.

    Regards,
    Gayathri

if he is losing weight , he has hyper thyroidism .does he have any other medical issue ? you need to give him regular foods . there is no vegetable to avoid , rather he needs to eat more veggies of the ones that i asked to avoid in the above mentioned article.

      Hi Rashmi,

family planning as in you planning for conceive or otherwise ? if it is conception you are thining of , i dont think you should delay anymore. age of women has an important role to play during healthy pregnancy. tsh levels get elivates ehen thyroid starts hypo functioning and it eventually leads to hypothyroidism , and medicines m=become essential. right now all you can do is manage weight near normal , exercise and follow the tips mentioned above already to avoid getting into the situation . but keep checking your thyroid levels evry month or attleast alternate month .

    Hi Payal,

I have hypo thyroid, I take 25 mg throxine on my wake up. I have joined gym recently for morning workout. So I just want to confirm few things to do it correctly.

I have two questios to ask, First, How long should I wait to have food after tablet in the early morning and the second is after some time, I planned to have 1 tbsp flax seed powder with warm water in empty stomach ( suggest by gym trainer), Will this interept in my thyroid medication, Can flax seeds be taken during hy thyroid ?

    Kindly clear my doubts.

      Hi Megu ,

no , dont worry . the first thing you do after waking up in the morning is take your medicines with warm water . after 5 mins you can take flax seeds as suggested by your trainer . food is no issue , you can take whenever you wish too. just make sure you maintain a 45 mins to 1 hour gap between your meals and exercises.

        Hi Payal,

Oh, Thanks for clearing my doubt on flax seeds.

So, I can have my pill on my wake up, then after 5 mins I can have flax seeds powder with warm water. After that how long I should wait to take my pre workout snacks like banana, milk or any fruits ? Can I have it immediately after flax seeds or I should wait for some time ?

And you mean that after my pre out snacks, I should maintain a gap of 45 mins to workout ?

          Hi ,

yes you can have pre workput snack after 10 mins of having flax seeds. if you are having a heavy pre workout meal, than wait for atleast 30 – 45 mins befre you start your workout . but if you are having just a fruit and some milk or a liht pre workout snack , than you could workout after 15 – 20 mins too.

            Thanks for clearing my doubts.

I have one more doubt too. I am really struggling to lose weight after hypo-thyroid. So I just want to do try things in correct way to get results. The question is, How long should I wait after gym workout to eat ?.. Some article in net suggests us to eat immediately after workout and some suggests us to wait atleast one hour to eat. Which is correct one to follow to lose weight ?
            Kindly suggest.

            Hi Megu,

if you are aiming for weight loss, the first thing your should take immediately after work out is either warm water and lemon , or green tea or a black coffee shot without sugar . all these drinks will help in keeping your BMR raised for some time after workout. after 45 mins , you can have any low calorie snack . if you are doing strength training and working out your muscles to gain lean body mass, the post workout nutrition changes.

I just what to have a normal weight. I’ve been eating a piece of bread or two a day. And I’ve still gained weight. I take a tablet of 25 and a tablet of 50 microgram. Sometimes my reports are in the normal range and sometimes they aren’t.

If eating less would be an answer to thyroid and weight loss , half of the nation would be in the right weight . please give up the thought of eting less, rather get involved in 45 mins intensive workout and a proper balanced meal to make sure you become helathy and fit . results may be slow , but you would definitely see them in 2-3 months . patience is the key . dont give up on it already , you have a beautiful youth life to face ahead .

But right now, after almost 4mons RAI Treatment and 1mon of taking Levothyroxine Euthyrox I weight 81.5Kg. I am so down and depressed because of my weight, I’ve been expecting that after a month of taking Levothyroxine I might lose weight. Although the other symptoms disappear my problem is I still gain weight even I do exercise and I don’t really eat much.

its not same with all . you are too young to be worrying about these issues . the best way to fight your problem is to keep exercising 45 mins every day and take your medications in time . try to keep your weight near normal by eating healthy diet . if you do all this and your thyroid levels are in range , you can lead a normal life , without worrying about anything in the world.
