Type 2 Diabetic Diet Plan for Indians (1500 calories)

Last Updated on February 19, 2020 | RD, Payal Banka (Registered Dietitian) 395 Comments

” Diabetes ” a word that may bring chills down your spine when detected for yourself or for a loved one. The first thing that comes to your mind after being diagnosed as a diabetic is, ” What do I eat ? ” ” What is a carbohydrate?” and ” what is low glycemic index food ? “.  Well, we would make the answer simple for you in this Type 2 Diabetic diet plan for Indians (1500 calories).Type 2 Diabetic diet plan for Indians (1500 calories)

I am sure that by now you already know the basics of what happens in diabetes, and what is insulin. Probably you must have heard from a lot of people that you need to drink a glass of Bitter-gourd juice (karela) juice every morning and avoid sugar to the fullest. In a way, most people think that after being diagnosed with diabetes, they lose their freedom to eat tasty food. But this is not true, you can still enjoy the liberty of eating what you wish to eat. All you need is to maintain a balance over the food you eat and the exercises you do.

When it comes to diabetes, we always hear about low glycemic index foods. Let us first learn more about glycemic index to understand the concept o this Type 2 Diabetic diet plan for Indians (1500 calories)

What is Glycemic Index ?

The glycemic index is the capacity of a particular food as to how quickly it can raise the blood sugar level. The foods which are quickly digested and release glucose immediately to raise the blood sugar levels have a high glycemic index. whereas those foods which take longer to digest and release glucose slowly in the bloodstream are the ones with the low glycemic index.

Researches have proved that low glycemic index foods are better for the health of diabetics and those who are prone to diabetes. Constantly high levels of sugar in the blood vessel can damage these blood vessels causing greater threat and irreversible diseases of heart and other organs in the body.

Glycemic index categorization –

Glycemic – Index                 Diabetes

High   70 and Above     To be avoided completely
Medium   56 – 69     Can be eaten in restriction
Low   55 and Below     Should be included liberally

Dr. David Jenkins, professor of nutrition at the University of Toronto has developed a low glycemic index diet to benefit all the diabetics. On his guidelines, we have tried planning a Type 2 Diabetic diet plan for Indians (1500 calories)

Glycemic Index of some common foods –

FoodGI
Roasted and salted peanuts14
Cherries22
Whole milk27
Skimmed milk32
Apples38
Pears38
Apple juice, unsweetened40
Noodles40
All-Bran42
Oranges44
Orange juice46
Brown Rice50
Banana55
Basmati Rice58
Honey58
Ice cream61
Coca-cola63
White bread70
Watermelon72
Cornflakes84

Foods to include in a Low Glycemic Diabetic Diet –

In Type 2 Diabetic diet plan for Indians (1500 calories) you can include the following foods.

1] Bran can be added in your flours to reduce the GI and increase fiber.

2] whole wheat bread, Multi-grain bread with broken grains are healthier than refined flour bread.

3] The majority of vegetables are low in the glycemic index and can be liberally used in day to day life. On must always eat a variety of vegetables than repeating the same ones every day.

4] Include brown rice over white rice.

5] You can enjoy the whole wheat varieties of pasta and noodles. These are easily available in supermarkets these days.

6] salads should be a compulsory part of both main meals. This provides fiber and helps in the slow release of glucose in the bloodstream.

When to eat sweets and other high carb fruits like mangoes?

Diabetics who are fond of eating desserts and sweets get depressed when they have to keep avoiding it all the time. But this is not so. you can have sweets and mango (1-2 pieces ) during mid meals / In between 2 meals. Or early morning hours when the blood sugar levels would be lower than usual.

If you are following a Type 2 Diabetic diet plan for Indians (1500 calories), it is always better to avoid eating sweets and fruits along with the meal. As this may lead to sugar spikes in the blood.

This Type 2 Diabetic diet plan for Indians (1500 calories) plan will give you an example of how to place your fruits in eating routine.

Read – List of fruits and vegetables allowed in diabetes; blood sugar level wise.

– 1200 calories diet plan for diabetes and weight loss.

Exercise –

Normally if you ask anybody, you will be told to do morning walks for around an hour. But I think a deeper approach is needed here. To decide what exercise will suit you best, first, check your sugar levels and decide accordingly.

1 ] If fasting Blood sugar level is high:-

Fasting sugar levels are a result of the overnight hepatic output of glucose (produced by the liver during the night, unlikely of what food you ate).  To control increased fasting blood sugar levels, morning walks will not be very helpful. You need to walk for 45 mins in the evening or late at night to control the fasting blood sugar level and bring the liver to produce less glucose at night.

2] Postprandial blood sugar levels are high : –

If your pp blood sugar levels are high, this is directly proportional to the food you eat. hence one must eat correctly and walk for 10- 15 mins (slow to medium pace walking) at home or parking area or terrace. These small walks after all 3 main meals will help in better digestion and utilization of already present blood glucose, making room for some more. Hence lowering your pp blood sugar levels.

Morning walks are good for overall control. Hence you must decide on your walk timings based on the current blood sugar level scenario.

    Dear Payelji,
I’m 63, man, weight 80 kg, height 163 cm. Recent BS figures are: 169 (fasting) and 369 (pp). About a week ago, doctor gave me Istamet (Mitformin) but BS figures grew more after that medicine!! So I’m scared though my food intake did not awfully deviate from what was suggested. Now I have resumed my practice of morning jogging (1.5 hrs), free hand (30 mins) and pranayama (1 hr) for 2 months now & I love doing them. My questions are: (1) Will it help even if I overshoot the 1500 cal? (2) Can I have 2/3 pegs of alcohol (with salad) with a few pieces of lean meat? (3) Can I eat plenty of sweet fruits, whatever they are?
I’m scared and want to reduce my BS level fast.
I really appreciate the great free service you are rendering to our countrymen in need. Thank you so much, indeed.
    Kamal

      Hello sir ,

Thank you for your kind words. i am glad that i can make my knowlwdge come to use to help you all. please find your answers below –

      (1) Will it help even if I overshoot the 1500 cal?
      – i think you should stick with the 1200 calorie diet plan . we have that on dietburrp . do check .

      (2) Can I have 2/3 pegs of alcohol (with salad) with a few pieces of lean meat?
      – i feel you should avoid alcohol atleast for the time being. let your fasting and pp sugar levels decline . wait till you pp sugar is under 200 , then you can have 1-2 pegs a week . yes salad and some lean meat with it will do.

      (3) Can I eat plenty of sweet fruits, whatever they are?
      – when blood sugar rises above 300 , we ask patients to stop eating fruits for a while. this helps in getting the sugar levels down . you can resume eating the allowed fruits once sugar levels are below 250 mg /dl. but not all fruits.

follo our 1200 cal diet plan for diabetes . it will really help you .

      Hi Khushi ,

Jowar has a little higher sugar in comparison to wheat , but if your sugar levels are not very high and if jowar roti is eaten once or twice a week , it wont harm . it is much better than consuming regular white rice too.

      Hi ,

are you taking any medicines for diabetes ? has the doctor declared you as a diabetic ? for an average indian to be declared as diabetic , the fasting blood sugar levels should be above 126mg / dl . have you crossed that range yet ? if not , then you are a border line diabetic . and your condition can be improved with diet nd exercise intervention . and medicines can be avoided.

      Hi Ajay,

at this point yopu can definitely control your sugars with healthy eating and exercises. just avoid all that is simple sugars . walk for 10 mins after each meal and instead of morning walks , walk at evening or at night to control the fasting sugar levels.

you have not mentioned your weight , if you are over weight , try to lose 2-3 kgs and your sugars will automatically come down. drink warm water and lemon and green tea without sugar several times a day .

What is the normal range for blood sugar level Fasting. Many labs in India consider it as 70-110mg, WHO recommendation , while the American Diabetes Association considers it as 70-100mg.

      Hi Rajiv ,

the reference range differs as per the method of testing in the lavbs . the best way is to just look up for the reference range provided in your report by the lab that you are testing your sugar with .

    Respected Man,

Recently I got my Blood Sugar F done and Uric acid done. It was 144 mg/dl & 5.S mg/dl respectively. Since I am just 31 year old, I am really worried. I travel for about 8 hrs daily apart from my working hours and find little time to sleep, about 5 hrs a day. I am vegetarian and eat a lot and mostly green vegetable but diet times are irregular.
I have started taking care of these things but need some advice how to keep blood sugar in limit and to kill it completely.

    Looking forward to your reply.

    Regards

    Hello,

I was diagnosed with Type II diabeties , my blood sugar level on 13th August ,2015 was 325 fasting and 482 random, since then I am following strict diet control and medicine.
I am drinking karela juice every morning empty stomach after the walk.
Ten days back my blood sugar level was 112 fasting and 159 PP.
Please suggest if i continue with karela juice or switch over to methi seed soaked water?

you can take either of the 2 . they are both equally helpful. you can consume brown rice 3 times or 4 times in a week in limited quantity . white rice , restrict to not more than 2 times a week . and remove the starch by cooking in excess water.

I starting reading on diet restrictions and with the tremendous options available to diabetics on foods to eat and avoid request your suggestion. Find that methi seeds/flax seeds/Apple cider vinegar are good to have pre/post meals. Which is the best here? Should a person chose one or all The options make it all the more confusing. Hello mam ,

thanks for reading at Dietburrp . what i really really feel is that you are punishing yourself by eating the same food through out the day . this might also lead to nutritional deficiencies . ragi balls with veggies is indeed an healthy combination , but i really feel you should incloude more healthy options and more variety in your routine.

go for brown rice with veggies and sambar , oats upama with veggies , broken wheat daliya with veggies , pongal with veggies, whole wheat flour rotis with sabji and daal . warm milk will help too in little quantity . are you a vegetarian or a non – vegetarian ? you can also include eggs and chicken broths in your routine .

    Hello Madam,

I am a medical representative, work in rural areas and stay outside from my family for almost 23 days a month due to my job posting. I have odd timings of eating, sometimes absolute rich diet, sometimes fruits, sometimes dry foods, sometimes only eat sweets in the lunch time or sometimes keep myself in empty stomach for 5-6 hours a day. But I never eat junk foods. I do not smoke. I do not drink alcohol. As I travel by bus/train thus I have to do fieldwork by walking a lot (2-6km/day). I drink 2-4 liters of water every day.
I have recently been diagnosed with Fasting venous plasma glucose result of 95 (60-110mg/dl), total cholesterol 202,HDL 40, LDL 104, VLDL 58 and TG 301 report dated 13/01/2015. Though I can realize it is the beginning but I want to be healthy and fit by following the almost similar diet chart of yours.
But due to change in regular and improper diet, I gained weight from 74 Kgs to 85Kgs in just 5 years – my height is 5 feet 10 inch and my age is 31 Years.

As My father has diabetes (type 2) and we have a history of diabetes, your information on diet in Diabetes has been impressive and important hence I thought of writing to you.

I did body building and it was my passion in the year of 1998 to 2006. After getting the job I have to quit. I wish I could do but……Now I want to know what should be my current diet and what extra care I should take for controlling or eliminating high lipid level permanently.

    Dear Ms Payal,

I am a marketing person and keep on outdoors for almost 23 days a month. I had odd timings of eating and absolutely wrong diet.
I have recently been diagnosed with Fasting Blood Sugar of 114 (range – prediabetic 100-125) and PP Blood Sugar of 123 (70-139) report dated 15/01/2015. Though it is the beginning I follow the almost similar diet as mentioned above in your 1500 calorie chart as suggested by our family Ayurveda Physician.
But due to sudden change in regular heavy diet (may be?) I have lost of weight from 74 Kgs to 65 Kgs – my height is 163 cms and my age is 47 Years.

Your information on diet in Diabetes has been impressive hence I though of writing to you.

Now, my daily routine includes walking for 25 mnts, exercise and yogasanas for 20 mnts.

I wish to know whether my current diet of 1500 Cal is OK? and what extra care I should take for controlling or eliminating high sugar level permanently.

      Hi Devendra,

well, since it is the beginning and you are not on any medications yet i suppose , you can ollow the 1500 calorie diet but exercise a little more . you will have to walk for 10 mins after breakfast , lunch and dinner and evening walks for 30 mins along with morning workout . this will help in getting your blood sugar regularied .

the weight loss may be due to increased sugar levels in the blood . it is very common with newly detected diabetics , as even though the blood sugar is high , it is not available to the body cells and they depend on fat cells for energy .. hence the weight loss. but that gets normal after wards .

        Dear Ma’m,

Thank you for your reply. shall follow the instructions given by you. Is it necessary to test sugar levels? and if yes, at what intervals?

What are the symptoms of high sugar? I used to feel slippy sometimes while on wheels after meals. Was it because of high sugar?
How fasting and PP high sugar differ in terms of risk factor?

        Thanks,

yes that can be due to high sugar levels .

fasting sugar is the sugar produced by the body at night to keep the metabolic process on while you sleep. hence food does not really play a major role in fasting sugar , it is the body’s own production .

post prandial sugar / pp sugar is the blood sugar raised by the food you eat , hence it is directly related to your food intake . hence the management approach in both is different .

risk factor are same for both types . now that you are not really on medicines , you can keep a check on your blood sugar by testing it once a week , but if you see any difference in health or any health issue , you could check it on that day .

keeping a glucometer handy is better .

      Hi Vineeth ,

when timings is a problem , walking is the best exercise you can do .. bcoz you dont spend money , and do it when you have time and skip it on that day if you are busy .. morning evening or night is no problem , home or office or construction site is no problem too … this way you can ensure some calorie expenditure atleast .

food wise , you can follow ny 1200 calorie diet plan mentioned on our website , choose your cuisine , we have mostly all cuisines .. if you want me to plan your diet for weight loss, please see thispage – https://www.dietburrp.com/diet-services/

First of all, thank you for very helpful tips and particularly these varied diet plans. I think people need plenty of awareness about diabetes management; specially what they should eat and I am sure your portal is making a lot of difference. I like the simplicity of the contents and that you have responded to each and every query raised here.

I just wanted to know how methi seeds help with diabetics. Also, do we need to consume the methi seeds as well? If yes then while having the methi water in the morning or we can have them during the day? Secondly, is this 1500 cl diet good for active people as well? As context- I am a male, 45 years of age and as per the recent blood tests my fasting sugar was 96 and PP 147. Lipid profile is normal. For example I do about 10000 steps every day – hence the question. Also, will you be able to suggest a non-veg diet as well?

      Hi Sanjay ,

      thanks a lot .

1] yes methi has a hypoglycemic effect , so it has the ability to reduce the relase of glucose in your blood streams for some time . so a lot of individual consume sprouted methi seeds , or soaked methi seeds and water . you can take that too. but depending on methi alone as a cure for your diabetes is not correct . i hope you understand what i mean .

2] yes a 1500 calorie diet would suit an active person like you.

3] yes , you can add some egg whites , and some lean chicken or fish dishes to this routine , twice in a week .

      Dear sir,

you need to walk for 10 mins after every meal to be able to control pp sugar. if you feel hungry every 2 hours, you need to consult your doctor to reduce a bit of your dosage. this will help you over all. and with the reduced insulin intake, you can walk for 10 – 15 mins after every meal , this will help in overall health management.

i do not recommend any for of alcohol, but if you really really wanna have it , you can have ax 2-3 pegs but not more. and please dont take neat, mix water with your drink, also have some salads to accompany alcohol.

    Hi Payal,
My husband is suffering from diabeties from last 10 years. He is 45 now. He is on medication as well as diet control. But his glycated haemoglobin is shooting up. I give him multigrain roti in dinner with lots of vegetables. Evening walk is almost regular (30 min.) but whole day he is glued to office chair. M also giving him fenugreek seed and cinnamon powder every alternate day. NO SWEETS.
Please suggest …( His weight is 76 kg and height 173 cm)

      Hi ,

glycated heamoglobin is the avegrage sugar control of the last 3 months. since when have ou started the above mentioned measures ? to see the effects of these healthy items , you ll hve to wait for 2-3 months (from the date of previous HB A1c report) and retest again to see how thi has worked. till then if his day to day pp and fasting sugars are in control you can relax . make sure he is in his right weight range.

    Hi Payal,
I am justin from cochin, Kerala, i am very concerned and worried about my mother, she is now 60 years of age and is severe diabetic patient. Since we are south indians , you are well know that our tradition when comes to food is RICE. Her fasting Blood sugar level as well as Postprandial blood sugar levels are very high, i.e. more than threshold. She is always weak and she is loosing weight. Recently my father was told by his friend about some doctor who is a specialist in ayurvedic treatment of diabetics. The doctor advised treatment for a course of one month and from his dispensary he has given us the medicine for one month. Now the real crisis is that after taking the medicine my mother is shivering like anything similar to conveltions. Now i am realy afraid doctor therefore iam really requesting you to please mail me a Diet plan that suits best for south indians food habits. Iam awaiting for a reply with my fingers crossed.

    Regards
    Justin Jose

      Hi Subashree,

you can soak methi seeds overnight and gulp it down with water in the morning , this will help in both sgar control and weight loss. if weight is no concern , and you need to lower your sugar, you can add 1/4 th tsp fenugreek seed powder to your vegetable gravies / flours 3-4 times a day.
