What are piles?

Pile is a condition in which there are inflammation and swelling in the veins present in the lower rectum. It is also referred to as hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids are the structures in the anus that control stool movement. They provide a cushion to arterio-venous channels and connective tissue in intestines that aid the passage of stool.

What are Different Types of piles /Haemorrhoids?

  •  Internal Haemorrhoids: They are painless and may have rectal bleeding
  •  External Haemorrhoids: There is a pain in the area of the anus. A person who is suffering from piles experiences a severe amount of pain while passing stools.

What are the general symptoms of Haemorrhoids:

Indian diet plan for piles

• Itching
• Rectal pain
• Rectal bleeding

In most cases, symptoms will resolve within a few days. While sometimes the symptoms of other gastrointestinal abnormalities may mimic like hemorrhoid symptoms. Thus, rule out any possibilities of fissures, fistula, abscess, irritable bowel syndrome or colon cancer.

Symptoms of internal hemorrhoid:
• Hematochezia: Bright red blood covering the stool.
• Protrusion of hemorrhoids through the anus.
Symptoms of external hemorrhoids:
• Painful swelling or lump around the anus.

What are the Causes of Haemorrhoids /piles?

• Aging
• Genetics
• The absence of valves within the haemorrhoidal veins
• Constipation or constant diarrhea
• A low-fiber diet
• Pregnancy
• Prolonged sitting or standing.
• Feeling of hurriedness during the passing of tools
• Obesity
• Strenuous work and intensive exercises
• Tension, anxiety, and stress

How to treat Haemorrhoids?

• Medication for symptomatic relief.
• Keeping the stools soft to pass easily without any pressure or straining.
• Increase fiber intake and oral fluids.
• Surgery in extreme cases.

Indian diet plan for piles:

Before we see the actual diet plan for piles, we first need to check about the dietary changes and details of which foods to include and which foods to avoid in piles. So let us see them one by one here –

Dietary changes for hemorrhoids:

The primary goal of this Indian diet plan for piles is to get strain-free and smooth stools so there is no further damage to the intestines. Include high fiber foods in your daily diet. Add leafy vegetables, whole grain cereals, millets, salads, unpeeled fruits and unstrained soups with your meals.

How does fiber help in hemorrhoids?

  • The Roughage in the diet is excreted with the other waste products from the intestines.
  • The water-absorbing fiber loosens the stools and helps in easy passage of the body waste a.k.a excreta.
  • Thus, this reduces the pain and inflammation caused by hemorrhoids.

What Foods to Eat to Prevent Haemorrhoids and to Reduce Haemorrhoids?

• Green leafy vegetables are high in antioxidants and nutrients thus are good for digestions. Eat plenty of spinach, kale, cabbage, asparagus, broccoli, tomatoes, cauliflower, onions, cucumber, squash, turnips, carrots, celery, and zucchini. Make these  Greens an integral part of your Indian diet plan for piles.

• Whole-grain foods with bran cereals alleviate the strain applied while passing stools. Healthy foods like brown rice, oatmeal, bran cereals, whole grain flour, whole wheat pasta or multi-grain bread are good options to include in the Indian diet plan for piles.

• Fresh fruits with skin are high in fiber. The vitamins, minerals, and nutrients in fruits improve the digestive system function, easing the bowel movement. Include fruits like apples, strawberries, blueberries, raisins, prunes, and grapes. Fruits that can be eaten without skin are papaya, banana, oranges, grapefruit, and muskmelon.

• Sprouts are rich in fiber, vitamin C, proteins and calcium. All these nutrients help to treat hemorrhoids. Consume at least 1 cup of sprouts daily. But don’t eat raw sprouts as they will worsen the symptoms. Eat sprouts in the soft-cooked or steamed or boiled form to avoid irritation to the bowel.

• Consume psyllium husk to relieve constipation and loosen the stools. Psyllium husk is rich in soluble fiber. It makes the stool bulky and reduces the pressure during defecation.

• Drink at least 3 – 4 liters of water daily. Sometimes only fiber or dietary changes do not work. Thus, increasing water intake aids the easy passage of stool, thus relieving constipation.

• Consume probiotics or curd or buttermilk to aid proper digestion. Probiotics not only increase gut immunity and integrity but also fights back with any infection or inflammation. It relives hemorrhoid symptoms.

The List of Foods to Avoid in Piles :

Indian diet plan for Piles

  • High carbohydrate and high-fat foods. These foods cause irritation to the bowel and also lead to constipation.
  • Meat, fish, eggs to avoid constipation.
  • Caffeinated products, like coffee, tea, chocolate aggravate constipation as well as inflammation of the bowel.
  • Smoking and alcohol too directly or indirectly affect the gastrointestinal wall health.
  • Bakery products made from refined flour, bread, cakes, pastries, pies, and puffs also cause constipation and worsen the hemorrhoids.
  • Spicy food causes bowel irritation and burning sensation while defecating. Eliminate chilies from your diet. It worsens the symptoms of hemorrhoids. Also, avoid black pepper.
  • Gas-forming foods like lentils, pulses, and dals irritate the bowel. hence use them in a properly cooked form and use 1 or 2 servings at the max in a day. Bloating increases pressure during defecation.

Now that you know about the foods to include and the foods to avoid in the Indian diet plan for piles, it is time to see the one-day sample Indian diet plan for piles.

Dear Dr. Payal, my wife recently experienced swelling but it is reduced after taking proper food. Rice is our staple food, but recently we added millets and reduced rice to the minimum. She apprehends that the millets might be the reason for swelling and stopped taking millets. Kindly advise if millets were the real cause for her problem. Thanks

      Hi ,

Actually any rough fiber can be a causitive factor , if the millets were consumed in a properly cooked form the chances are low , but it also depends on the person system and digestive abilities . if stopping the millet intake reduced the swelling , then she may be right !

      Hi Kd ,

You will have to consult a homeopath for it . I can only guide you diet wise. I know following the plan is difficult if you are in a hostel . but you can atleast avoid all the raw , spicy and oily food. eat plain rice and plain dal and curd along with any green leafy vegetable that is cooked . Ensure that you drink a lot of water . and continue to take sit baths .

    Hello,
I recently read your article regarding piles.
I am 23yrs old and suffering from piles since 2 months. During the first 15-20 days I didn’t have bleeding but passing stool was painful sometime . Therefore I consulted a homeopathic doc and had homeopathic medicine for one month. The bleeding didn’t stop and pain kept on increasing. After a month when I saw the condition worsened I consulted allopathic doc who recommended me to take few tablets, sitz bath, apply ointments and stool softeners.it has been 3 days but still bleeding and pain is there.
Please recommend what should I do to get rid of this pain which does not allow me to do any work .
Should I continue homeopathy or allopathy
    Waiting for your reply
    Thank you in advance

I would like to know that can i try the rubber band ligation on my own ?
And can it be cured solely by changing my lifestyle ( having the above mentioned diet and exercising regularly) or does it requires any other medicines?

      Hi Sahil ,

This actually depends on the physical condition of the piles .. operations are required only in extreme cases where the piles swell up to an extent that they block the passage and become extrmly painful and bleed . otherwise even Doctors advice you to manage it with diet and exercises and healthy living. Why go under scissors when you can manage it well..

      Hi Paresh ,

yes .. give it some more time … it will heal naturally .. meanwhile if your stools are not soft , then the pain may be due to this .. so in this case , you can have isabgol every night in a glass of milk at bedtime … this will also reduce the irritation as well as a bit of pain ..

the sweeling is due to inflammation .. if the pain has reduced , the inflammation will come down and swelling will come down too.

    Hi Payal

I hv noticed piles (mostly exterior) two days back. Its neither bleeding nor itching but its paining and there is burning sensation. Also paining alot while passing tools.

One known medical practioner, suggested pile cure tabs and a cream. Is it fine to use that and follow diet plan as mentioned above in my case or would you recommend a check up ?

      Hi Vini ,

Yes this will help .. please use this .. taking betadine bath ( sitting in a tub of warm water with betadine) also helps in reducing the inflammation . and relaxes the muscles and the pain will naturally come down .

      Hi Anusha ,

i hope your father is doing better now . the intial pain is very natural . and it will be there . so dont worry . it will get better soon . you cab give him isabgol / psyllium husk in milk at night . this ensures very soft stool and easy passage without causing much pain. also give hime 1 cheese cube to eat after dinner.

    Hi Mam,

I have bleeding piles a year back and started to take homeopathy medicine for the past 6 month. There is no good improvement i can find in it. But still i am going to homeo and having the hope i will get cured . I am getting bleeding at least monthly once. I am having the burning and itching sensation and still there is no improvement. Do you suggest me to still go to homeo ? also how long it will take to get cured completely if i go to homeo. I am having Grade 1 piles it seems.

if it has not gotten well in 6 months , it is better to see an allopathy doctor … you might need a surgery if this bleeding does not stop.

    Hi,

I’ve read the article, and I noticed how we’re asked to eat a lot of leafy vegetables.. but I don’t think a person with piles should be having any leafy veggies. Yes, it has a lot of fiber, but its mostly insoluble which makes your stool harder.

Sprouts, chickpeas etc, all have a lot of insoluble fiber in it, which should be avoided.

What you need is soluble fiber, which absorbs water and makes the stool softer.

I hope you find this helpful.

the changes are good. the changed diet will help you in both fatty liver and gall bladder stones as well. i would suggest that you take an homeopathy treatment for piles , they are effective and within 1 week you will get a lot of relief. fatty liver wil take some time , but of you follow the diet for fatty liver mentioned on our website , it will help you a lot in reovering from the issue

See, even i have heard it is a good home remedy , but to be frank with you , i havent really tried it and have no reviews about it from any of my clients . Hence , i am not the right person to advice you on taking it . You can check with other dieticians, who might have more information on this.

please continue with homeopathy . i hope you are eating correctly as well. if you ate any high fiber with lot of roughage , or spicy food , the pain will come back again . wait till the piles heal completely before you start eating all this food.

But through internet search I’m sure that my hermorrohids is internal and it prolapse during bowel movement and i have to push it back. Earlier it was easy for me to push but now it is very hard to push because it is extremely painful for me even to touch. Please help me with the diet and what home treatment i can do. Hi Aasha,
I have replied to your facebook comment as well .. looking at your condition , i will advice you to immediately rush to a doctor , if this heamorrhoid bursts , you will experience worst pain ever . so please dont play with your health . plus , it is natural for th doctor to advice you for surgery , but please see the criticality of the situation . if you think you can hold it for a week , you must immediately start taking homeopathy tratment . i have seen worst cases of piles , where surgeries were indicated and the client got better within a week with the help of betadine bath / sek in hot water and homeopathy medicine .

      Hi Malini ,

if you eat a cube of cheese every night , or have 1 glass milk with 1 tsp ghee in it , the stools will become soft and you wil have painless excretion t he next morning .

take corn starch soup , rice water kanji , coconut water . for the next week . avoid raw fruits and veggies in this week , the stools will become soft and pain will reduce . after 15 days of your surgery you can start eating veggies and fruits back in your diet . this is helpful in the long run . but immediate after surgery , fiber will a=only cause problem . so have very light and soft foods. for this week .

Piles is in our family. Mostly external. It’s very painful and lasts for days weeks and months. I tried homeopathy medication. I take medicine for 1-3 days and it disappears. I’m 35. And in last 15 years whenever (approx 5 times) it happened I had homeopathy medicine. Eat according to the diet plan explained above, it would help. It happens cuz of genetic even if you don’t have genetic it can happen cuz of diet we eat today. It can be cuz of fatty liver also. Check your liver and eat liver 52, 2 tablets morning and night after food (45 min) with glass of water for 3-5 days. Liver 52 is harmless. Avoid processed food, don’t use microwave. Eat fresh, excellent if fresh cooked and oil free. Use olive oil instead of any other oil.

      Hi Sudhir ,

Thank you for reading at dietburrp. Piles are mere swelling of the veins at anus. so if you eat right and take the right steps , the swelling goes down , and it becomes normal . but it can be again provoked by wrong eating habits, stress , and improper lifestyle. so you need to be cautious always.
