Bengali Diet Plan for Weight Loss (1200 Calorie)

Last Updated on February 19, 2020 | RD, Payal Banka (Registered Dietitian) 574 Comments

1200 calorie Bengali diet plan for weight loss. Summarizing Bengali cuisine in 1200 calories was the most difficult task. Being born and raised as a Bengali may make you experience the pleasures hidden in the water! In other words, your Bengali soul and spirit may get enriched with the pleasures that you derive from the great taste of fish recipes. Bengali and East Indians in general, are known for their love of fish dishes! In fact, Bengali recipes have earned worldwide recognition.

Bengali Diet Plan for Weight Loss

Rabindranath Tagore once said that the greatest sacrifice of a lifetime is made by those who are able to deny the call of their taste-buds. Perhaps, the poet’s comment was based on how he observed and analyzed the foodie temperament of Bengalis. While modernization has touched lives in Bengal in many areas including diet and lifestyle. Over these years, the basic attitude of Bengalis towards food has remained the same.

Bengali Food Culture

Bengalis are known for their creative culinary abilities and damn-caring attitude when it comes to satisfying their taste buds. And this is the reason why it is quite challenging to design a diet plan to address the demands of Bengali taste buds as well.

Bengalis were emotional about their food and they will continue to show deep emotions throughout generations. A Bengali mother may choose to fast for the entire day if her son somehow misses a meal. A father may feel defeated if he is not able to arrange for the best quality food at his daughter’s wedding.

A Bengali bahu would keep no stone unaltered to grab the appreciation that her mom-in-law had been receiving for years for her extraordinary culinary skills.

Bengali cuisine:

Bengalis relish Kaju Kish-mish pulao with chicken kosha, katla machher kalia, chingrir malai curry, maccher dimer bora or pathar jhol. You will feel the true sweetness of life when you enjoy occasional treats.

A bowl of nolen gurer payesh, hot and freshly prepared rasgullas, deep-fried pantuas and amritis. Aam pannar sherbet, rasmalai, chomchom, kelakand and pithe- patishapta would lose their significance if you have them every day.

Bengali sweets:

Bengalis are known for their sweet-tooth and they conclude each meal with a special sweet. Bengalis love to embrace a “kuchh meetha ho jaye” attitude at all times of the day – in times of failure as well as success. In celebrations as well as regular meal times, in joy as well as sorrow and in thick and thin.

Excess consumption of sweets is one big reason why a Bengali’s diet plan may get disrupted easily. We do not advise you to forget the ‘sweetness’ of Bengali culture. However,  we definitely recommend that you enjoy sweets as an occasional reward.

You may find a sample 1200 Calorie Bengali Diet Plan for Weight Loss for you here :

The fact is that you can enjoy all the goodness of Bengali cuisine and keep control on the calorie meter by small portion intakes. Remember, all the good things come in small packets!

A Day of Food for Bengali’s :

A typical Bengali morning starts with luchi (deep-fried puri), or karaishutir kachuri (peas kachuri) and kosha aloo dum. Sondesh is a sweet treat to complete the morning meal.

A Bengali lunch consists of a lot of fried food items including aloo bhaja, karela bhaja, kumri bhaja and mach bhaja. The spiciest of Bengal specialties includes koi machher jhal, rui machher kalia, shorshe ilish bhape and chhanar dalna. Lau chingri, bhetki cutlet, or a simple yet deep-fried vegetable chop.

And yes, everything should end with a ‘sweet’ memory that may come in the form of malpua, chhanar jilipi, ras malai, and sita bhog. Or the legendary mishit doi. How can just a saag or chicken dish be the replacements for such purely Bengali mood-changers?

Why follow this 1200 calories Bengali Diet Plan for Weight Loss?

Obesity and diabetes are registering a steady increase in Bengal and other parts of India. It makes complete sense if Bengalis try to be a little conscious about what they eat. Bengalis have been strong preservers of their culture and traditions.  However, food is an area where Bengalis need to compromise a bit in order to stay healthy and enjoy their soil’s specialties. It’s all about embracing sustainability and modern Bengal has it in its spirit.

How is an Ideal Bengali Diet Plan for Weight Loss made?

An ideal Bengali diet plan for weight loss can be designed keeping in mind the person’s individual requirements. Every person has a different caloric requirement. This requirement is based on various factors like age, sex, medical conditions, activity levels, metabolism, etc. To lose weight in a healthy manner, calculate your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate). This will help you in knowing how many minimum calories your body requires in order to function properly.

This sample Bengali diet plan for weight loss will provide you with an idea of what an ideal 1200 calorie Bengali meal looks like. Although you must understand that this is just a generalized Bengali diet plan for weight loss, it may or may not suit your weight loss goal as there are chances your body requirements will be different. So do consult your dietician in-person to know if you can use this 1200 calorie Bengali Diet plan for weight loss.

      Hi Shomi ,

ofcourse it will . please go the healthy way out. dont think about following GM diet till you breast feed . with improper nutrition, the body starts refracting calcium and minerals from your bones for composing breast milk. and this will affect later on. please avoid it for now.

      Hi Ananya,

i understand that dieting as well as exercising is hard for you , but if you cant do even any 1 of it , how will you lose weight. hence what i suggest is even if you travel, walking is something that you can do anywhere in the world. so if you find time at morning , eve, or at night, do a 45 mins brisk walking session. diet wise, when at home, you can follow the pattern mentioned above, but when you are out, and eat at restaurants, eat soups, salads and eggs , and avoid rich gravies , fried items and confectioneries that are calorie laden.

    Hi Payal,

Good to see your blog. I need bit of advice. I loved your diet plan, but I have few problems :

    1. Hypothyroidism
    2.Low back issues
    3. Chronic fissure and Piles

I am 26 year old female, 5ft 3 inches tall, weighing 70kgs currently. I was always overweight but had managed to lose a 15kgs last year with diet and exercise, majorly heavy gymming. But my back issues since last year has refrained me from hitting the gym and I have gained all my weight back.

Can you kindly suggest if this diet alone , without any exercise will help me lose 15kgs within a span of 4 months?

      Hi Madhumita,

Yes very strict diets , or crash diets have this kind of effect on health , your hair will start falling, skin become dull and dry . hence we promote healthy weight loss only. you said you do not exercise, but at your age , its better to concentrate more on exercises for weight loss, rather than following crash diet, or it would cause irregular menstrual cycle and later in life you might face nutritional deficiencies causing problem in conceiving . you can still try following the diet plan mentioned above. this is nutritionally suffice and will not cause any health side effects.

      Hi Sondha,

Thank you for reading at Diet burrp. Yes. for you the ideal weight should be between 67- 65. it is not advisable to try for weight loss and conceiving at the same time. you would have to postpone your concieving plan till you lose some weight. rather weight loss will help you in conceiving. but if you are planning on immediate measures for conceiving, i would suggest you to not think about weight loss diets and intensive exercises.

I must tell you that I have started practicing yoga for 90 mins( Mon, Sat & Sun) with 20,mins body weight training ( Tues, Thursday & Fri)but I feel very light headed and feel drained out. Hi Payal! I’m studying dietetics and nursing but before I can have a career in helping people stay healthy, I need to get healthy first! Im 235lbs, 19 years old, and 5 foot 9. I dont work out and most of my exercise comes from walking between buildings and such during college.

I need to be at 180lbs by the end of this year. I’m Bengali and it’s kind of hard to stick to a low carb diet when the main course of every Bangladeshi meal is rice. I have tried this before, avoiding rice, bread, cereal, and eating veggies and yolk-free omelettes, and wheat roti with vegetables. But I feel unsatisfied without eating rice or pasta or anything.

I plan on starting my diet again with a few changes – no sugar, no rice (exception of a small portion of wild brown rice), no pasta or bread, no cheese and no red meat. I plan on eating veggies cooked in a pan with masalas (ghobi/bhaaji) and stuff with whole wheat roti, chicken dishes such as soup, healthy versions of chicken curry (minimal oil and lots of veggies and fat free yogurt), and such. Also planning on drinking lots of extra water a day, even if I am not thirsty, and also 3 cups of caffeine free Green Tea a day.

It’s just really hard dieting when all my family eats is rice and curries. Even though my mother does make plenty of Bhaajis/Ghobi but theyre made with a lot of oil or have a lot of heat to them that trigger pre-ulcer symptoms.

Do you think it’s a good idea? What would you change about this? I am a full time student and work afterwards and the most I can do is about 10 minutes of cardio a few hours before bed time.

      Hi Ranjan,

Thanks for contacting Dietburrp. whatever you are deciding for your diet is good . But you really dont need to give up on rice if you wanna lose weight. you said you are learning dietetics. Please apply the resistant startch theory to your rice and you can eat rice even while dieting. instead of having plain rice, make sure you add a lot of veggies to your rice or have a plate full of salads 10 to 15 mins prior to your main course so that you dont overeat. drink plenty o liquids through out the day , and exercises or walking for atleast 45 mins a day is essential to be able to lose good weight. timings for exercise are not very important. you can do it in the morning, afternoonb or evening oe night. just make sure you have a 1 to 1.5 hours gap in between your meals and exercise.

Just saw your plan, every thing else luks fine, but you need to increase fluid intake , dehydration can also lead to tired feeling. fruit juices , buttermilk, warm water and lemon and green tea should be included more often . also try having fruits, specially citrus fruits in your mid meal, dont worry abt the calorie part, just eattt .. i keep telling my clients all the time, that leave your worries about calories on me , just enjoy the prescribed food, this way weight loss doesnt luk tedious, it luks funs and easy and healthy !!

      Hi Somshukla,

Thank you for reading at Dietburrp. You can definately include fish in your weight loss diet , its good in all terms . A 2007 study published in the International Journal of Obesity suggested that the type of fish was not particularly important when it came to enhanced weight loss. although herring, sardines , halibut , trout , black cod and sable fishes are considered good.

also the method of cooking is very important , go for grilled , baked fish rather than deep fried ones. walking at medium pace wld also help you without hurting your knee .. instead of walking for 1 hour at strech , divide the walking sessions in to 4 times of 15 min each , this will help . To get a personalized diet plan , kindly see this page – https://www.dietburrp.com/diet-services/

    Hello Mam,
    Great Site. Great Work
But a question. Are these diets strictly for women? As far as I know men need 2000calories diet. And to lose weight not more than 500calorie reduction daily is recommended. So it seems these are exclusively for women. If yes can you please kindly formulate for men too?

      Hi N,

It is correct that on an average a man with medium activity requires around 2000 calories to fulfill body requirements. And you are correct, we substract 500 cals from daily intake in the first stage of weight loss. These charts are designed for weight loss stage 2 and 3 . As mentioned in the article it is strictly a sample diet chart, and may or may not suit a particular persons requirement. So if anybody is specifically looking out for a 1200 calorie diet chart, may follow it , whether a male or a female. I am yet to post 1500 calorie diet charts on my blog. If you are looking for a 1500 calorie diet chart you would have to wait for the post :) . Or you can just add 2 chapatis for lunch or dinner and it would provide you around 1500 calories . keep other things same, same breakfast , same dinner, and have lunch comprised of 3 chapatis , 1 soup bowl full of veggies + 1 small bowl of chiken curry/ egg curry / 1 katori dal.

Hi Gargi , if you cant do strict diets, than atleast join a gym and workout . But i must tell you that for weight oss, diet and exercise works best in combination. try to exercise for 45 mins or more and with that try to stick to the above mentione chart you might ose good weight. or you can get a customized diet plan for you based on your lifestyle and scedule.
