But have you ever noticed over the period of time you again put on the earlier weight? Do you know why? One such talked about diet is Gm diet. Have you ever pondered that even after putting in so much effort you are back to square one? This is because the energy intake is more than the energy burnt by an individual. When you follow a certain diet, it has very fewer calories compared to what you eat daily. This is how there is negative energy balance in the body and you lose weight. But when you start a normal diet after following any diet, you start consuming more calories than you burn. Thus you put on weight.

In short, to maintain the lost weight is just a game of numbers. If you eat fewer calories than you burn, you will lose weight. You need a negative balance of calories to stop weight gain. If you eat calories equal to what you burn, you will maintain the weight you are at.

Something similar happens when you follow the GM diet. GM diet is a low-calorie diet, and hence weight loss is so easy with GM.  But after the completion, we switch back to the usual routine causing a yo-yo effect and the weight is gained.  So don’t get confused over what to eat after the GM diet. General Motors Diet:

First, we will understand what the GM diet is. GM diet is general motors diet for weight loss. It claims to reduce 4 – 7 kgs in a weeks’ time. Every day of the GM diet, allows you to eat different foods or food groups. GM diet claims to stimulate weight loss via the burning of fat in this process. This creates a calorie deficit in the body which helps you burn calories throughout the day.

The diet starts with having only fruits on the first day. The second day you eat only vegetables in either raw or cooked form. The third day has fruits and vegetables both in any form. The fourth day introduces only milk and banana in the diet. The fifth day you consume chicken, fish, beef or milk and cottage cheese with lots of water. Day 6 reduce meat intake and add lots of vegetables throughout the day. You end the seven-day diet with only brown rice, lots of fruits and vegetables in any form.   • The best thing to do is to eat clean.
  • Modify your daily intake.
  • Post GM diet consume low carb and high protein diet.
  • Keep the diet high in fiber and consume plenty of water.
  • This will keep the body clean and detoxified.
  • You can continue this modified diet till you again feel like starting with the next GM diet.

How calories to eat after finishing GM Diet?

  • What one is allowed to have after GM diet is based on the individual’s metabolic rate and requirement. Everyone has a different metabolic rate.
  • The metabolic rate differs with the BMI, activity pattern, eating habits, gender, age and season.
  • Once you are aware of your basal metabolic rate, calculate the calories required so that you do not put on weight.
  • The caloric intake has to be at least 500 calories less than the BMR.
  • Be careful to not reduce the caloric intake below 1200 calories. This might lead to severe nutrient deficiency.

Calculations seem to be difficult to follow on a daily basis. Instead, you can follow general tips on day to day basis. These are easy to understand and there are fewer chances of deviation. Start with minor healthy changes in the regular diet until it becomes a habit. This will make transforming your lifestyle towards health easy. Tips to follow to avoid weight gain after GM diet:

  • Replace all Refined foods and add more fiber

Replace all the refined foods like maida, pasta, refined flours with multigrain or whole grain flours. Avoid chana flour. Also, you can try to add bran to the chapatti flour. Switch to brown, black or red rice instead of classic white rice. Select wheat pasta instead of pasta made of refined flour.

  • Consume a variety of fruits and vegetables

Fruits are rich in fiber, minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants. Try to achieve a rainbow colored plate every time you sit for a meal. You can have fruits in any forms, juice or cut fruits or shakes. Also, vegetables in the form of salad, soup, vegetables, filling in a roll or stir-fried side dish are allowed. The fiber aid digestion, reduce cholesterol re-absorption in the body, gives high satiety levels and helps reduce weight.

  • You need at least 3 – 4 liters of water in a day

Increased water intake will detoxify the body, normalize the metabolic process, keeps the body temperature normal and help reduce further weight.

  • Restrict eating out in Restaurants and street foods.

Avoid calorie dense foods like fried, cheesy, desserts, oily foodstuffs. You can always opt for boiled, stir-fried, stewed, broiled, steamed, roasted or shallow fried food. Make healthy varieties at home and enjoy.

  • Replace the tannin and caffeine in your diet

Replace the tannin-rich cola, coffee, and tea with green tea or decaffeinated coffee. Green tea is rich in antioxidants too. These antioxidants help in body detoxification, is good for skin, is heart friendly, keeps stress and related issues at bay. The antioxidants improve the immune system and boost energy levels and refresh the mind.

  • Exercise

GM diet doesn’t include exercise as a part of its regime. But post-GM diet you can always indulge into at least 30 minutes moderate intensity workout. Try walk, jog, swimming, cycling, yoga or aerobics. High-intensity interval training is also a good option. It has a very promising effect on body weight.

    Hello, will there be a negative impact if intense exercise is added while on GM diet? like 30 minutes jogging and another 45 to an hour of gym workout. – Burnok

      GM is very crah diet and intense workouts will make you feel tired and exhausted easily during the workout. hence intense workout should be avoided during GM you can do light workouts

    Hello,
    I am Anjali 36 years 161 cm, and i started my GM Diet when i am 84.8Kg. Today is my 8th day and on completion of the diet i am 80.8Kg. I think the weight loss during this diet is little slow for me as i was already on diet since April 15th 2020 ( on the day weight is 94.8Kg). Is it possible for me to reach 70 – 72 Kg further with this diet. Please could you let me know how can i continue again this diet. With how many days of gap i should take after the 7th day of GM to continue the Diet again.

    Hi, so I am on day 7 and stuck to this diet religiously, drank at least 4 litres of water a day. I have only lost 4lbs and I lost an inch off waist and an inch off chest. Feel really disappointed that I really stuck to this but not had the result I thought I would. I know losing weight fast isn’t good as such as you will put it back on but I wanted this to kick start my health. Feel really deflated.

      Jey Andrea, if you are close to your ideal weight the weight loss pace is slow. there are many other factors like your menstrual cycle day , exercises , , hormonal status , etc affect the weight loss. don’t be disappointed ya …. as long as you lose weight and inches , that means your body responds to change and hence weight loss will be possible
