What is Gout?

Gout, also known as Gouty Arthritis. This is the name given to a sudden burning sensation accompanied by pain and swelling in the joints. The gout pain and inflammation come all of a sudden as an attack and can occur over and over till you get proper treatment for Gout. Although it occurs mostly in men, some women also get affected by it. Frequent attacks can cause harm to your tendons, joints, and tissues and the person feels extremely uneasy while walking. If you are overweight and consume too much alcohol, then you are at a greater risk of contracting gout. Most of the times, a person suffers a gout attack during the night. It begins with a sharp pain in the big toe accompanied by swelling, redness, tenderness and a strong burning sensation.

What causes Gout?

The root cause of gout is uric acid. Hyperuricemia is too much uric acid in your blood creates crystals of uric acid in the joints and this leads to gouty arthritis. The elevated uric acid levels lead to pain and inflammation of the joints along with swelling and redness. When certain proteins called purines in our body are broken down, the uric acid gets produced as a byproduct. Purine is found in the body naturally but it is also found in certain foods.

The uric acid levels in the body can get high due to obesity, genetics, and chronic decreased kidney function and due to certain medicines such as diuretics. Consuming too much red meat, fish and other seafood can also increase the uric acid levels in the body.

Symptoms of Gout:

Gout is characterized by the following symptoms:

  • Redness in the joints
  • Tophi โ€“ nodules under the skin
  • Pain in the joints
  • Swelling in the joints
  • Tenderness in the joints
  • Purplish or red skin around the joint

The symptoms of gout and the way they show up for different individuals may vary. Although most people experience gout in the form of an attack, some may have chronic gout. They have it all the time. Many a time, a person shows symptoms of gout after recovering from an illness or after surgery. Gout can also cause inflammation in the fluid sacs in the knees and elbows.

Indian Diet plan for Gout:

A person suffering from Gout needs to take great care of his diet. He should take a diet that is low in purine and hence low in uric acid. It might not be able to cure the disease but it will definitely help to lower the uric acid levels in the body and also decrease the risk of frequent painful gout attacks.

Before we move on to the actual Indian diet plan for gout, let us first see some useful tips that will help you in keeping gout away in the long run. These tips will also help to reduce uric acid levels in the body.

Simple tips to relieve from Gout and reduce Uric acid:

I do not recommened eating meat if you have high uric acid levels or gouty outbreaks .as mentioned in the article – Avoid eating red meats and other organ and glandular meats such as kidney and liver since these contain high quantities of purines. Avoid eating sea foods such as sardines, mackerel, scallops, tuna fish, herring and anchovies. These can contribute to high uric acid levels in your blood. Hi ,

      Meats:
Goat Meat – no , Country Chicken – no,Eggs only whites boiled or omelette – eggs have low purine, you can consume them but in moderation. upto 4 eggs a week is ok, not beyond that.

Fish: Labeo/Katla – limit it to once a week or twice.

Bread : whole wheat or brown bread or multigrain whole wheat bread – again they are not purine free , so have once or twice a week .

Does Cherry Juice Concentrate help – concentrates will not help , real balck cherry juice will help.

    Hi Payal,
My husband (age 34 yrs.) is facing Gout (Uric acid level is 8) off late. Agreed to the fact that he has gained weight as compared to when he was single.
Please suggest him a good diet considering Veg and Non-Veg. If you can let me know in detail what needs to be prepared and given to him, i will be grateful.

Also, is it OK to plan family while he suffers from High Uric Acid and Gout.

    Hi Mam,

I have uric acid level at 7.2 and recently started medication for the same.

The diet chart is very useful and i know it is better to avoid non vegetarian food as it has lot of purines but i dont see the non vegetarian diet in the above article. I just wanted to make sure of what non veg can be taken as part of meal at moderate level.

I know excercise is very important and i want to reduce around 10 kgs.

Below are few questions I have for you:

    1. Can you please advise how much my protein intake should be.

    2. Can i do moderate weight excercise along with cardio workout.

    3. Can i take multi vitamin tablets.

    4. Can i take fish oil capsule supplement.

Your response would be highly appreciated and would help many people as well.

    Thank you.

      Hi Ritesh ,

Thank you for reading at dietburrp. We ask to strictly avoid fish and meat. you can sometimes include eggs .

      1. Can you please advise how much my protein intake should be.
Protein intakek during high uric acids depends from person to person based on their age, activity level and other associated medical ailments. of a middle aged person with moderate activity level , the protein intake should be 0.8 / kg body weight.

      2. Can i do moderate weight excercise along with cardio workout.
      – yes of course you can .

      3. Can i take multi vitamin tablets.
      – yes , but it depends on which one you are consuming, its best to not take any over the counter supplements , and consult your physician for the same. to avoid interactions.

      4. Can i take fish oil capsule supplement.
      – Yes you can consume fish oil capsule in high uric acid level or gout, as purines are found mostly in fish meat and not really in derived oils.

you can have 1 cup sambar, it is thin and has less dal and hence will not be a problem in uric acid as the values are calculated. dont worry.

If your father follows the diet plan mentioned in the article, he will definitely benefit. A lot of my readers have mailed me about how this diet helped them in washing away the excess uric acid build up in their body and they are now inflammation free. so dont worry , just ask hime to follow this . and its goo that he is vegetarian , as all meats should be avoided in gout diets as they contribute a lot of purine.

crab, salmon, lobster, oysters, and shrimp, these contain a moderate amount of purine.

      Hi Mahendra ,

it is hard to predict , but prevention is definitely better than cure , so you need to take care of the gout , keep your uric acid levels in control and this will take you a long way . following the above mentioned diet can help you control your uric acid levels.

    Hi,
My mother is 58 years old and her uric acid level is 8. Weight is 75-78kgs. Sometimes she experiences acute pain in her legs and ankles.
What diet is best for her?
How much weight should she lose? And is walking, a little exercise and yoga in the morning ok in this condition?

      Hi Pragati ,

exercises are only to be avoided during an acute gout attack , but other than that , it should be done on a regular pace. you havent mentioned her height , but if her weight is on a higher end , she definitely will benefit with weight loss. you can ask her to follow the above mentioned diet plan for a month till she gets her uric aci in control , and once under control , ask her to follow our 1200 calorie diet plan for weight loss. this will help her in a very good way to take charge of her health .

      Hi,

you can walk for 15 – 20 mins , 2 to 3 times a day , instead of walking for 1 hour at a time . this will help you in noto feeling tired . the above mentioned diet can be followed by you . just avoid plain sugar in tea and milk , as that is not specified in the above given plan .

I am having pain in knee and uric acid is 8.05. I had been R hematologist and he has prescribed steroid and pain killer. As long as we continue with medicines, the pain gets subsided.
I have been recommended for GM -diet and I intend to go for this. I am having habit of going for morning walk every day and at night also I walk 1 to 2 km . Whether it is advisable to go for morning walk on daily basis or not ? Please advise which plan I should go for?

      Hello Sanjay ji ,

if you wish to follow GM diet , here is the link – https://www.dietburrp.com/indian-vegetarian-diet-plan-lose-weight-7-days-gm-diet/

yes you should go for daily walks in the morning , but for now , if the pain is at its peak , you should give your knees some rest . you can start walking once it regularizes . Also , you should walk on a plain , flat surface and in a slow to medium speed . usually we ask a person to walk for atleast 45 mins . but in your case you should walk for 30 mins , 2 times a day .

        hello mam
my mother is suffering from uric acid levels of 7.8 , she has made certain changes in her diet and has included amla and coriender chutney in it but we dont see any great improvements in her , the swelling in her legs still persists though it is now a little less than what it actually was so i wanted to check if we are going wrong any where
        1) she replaced normal flour with multigrain flour
        2) she eats coriender chutney with major portion of it being coriender and one tomato
        3) eats one raw amla a day
        4) takes green tea a cup in afternoon
        5) takes walk and does yoga every day
please point out if all the diets mentioned above are good or needs to be replaced with any thing else especially the flour ?

every thing looks ok , instead of seeing the improvements in terms of sweling , you must check her urick acid levels in the blood. Normally, uric acid dissolves in your blood and passes through your kidneys into your urine. But sometimes either your body produces too much uric acid or your kidneys excrete too little uric acid. When this happens, uric acid can build up, forming sharp, needle-like urate crystals in a joint or surrounding tissue that causes pain, inflammation and swelling. these crystals dont dissolve quickly …. and hence the swelling is different then a water retention kind of swelling.

if the case is severe , avoid tomato and curs as well.

currently the levels are qite high , so its better if he avoids non veg completely. vegetarian sources of protein like red channa , chickpeas , soya bean , besan are good for him . amongst veggies , he can avoid palak , and tomatoes . rest will do . he needs to basically drink plenty of water , so that the excess uric acid can be excreted from the body .
