Type 2 Diabetic Diet Plan for Indians (1500 calories)

Last Updated on February 19, 2020 | RD, Payal Banka (Registered Dietitian) 395 Comments

” Diabetes ” a word that may bring chills down your spine when detected for yourself or for a loved one. The first thing that comes to your mind after being diagnosed as a diabetic is, ” What do I eat ? ” ” What is a carbohydrate?” and ” what is low glycemic index food ? “.ย  Well, we would make the answer simple for you in this Type 2 Diabetic diet plan for Indians (1500 calories).Type 2 Diabetic diet plan for Indians (1500 calories)

I am sure that by now you already know the basics of what happens in diabetes, and what is insulin. Probably you must have heard from a lot of people that you need to drink a glass of Bitter-gourd juice (karela) juice every morning and avoid sugar to the fullest. In a way, most people think that after being diagnosed with diabetes, they lose their freedom to eat tasty food. But this is not true, you can still enjoy the liberty of eating what you wish to eat. All you need is to maintain a balance over the food you eat and the exercises you do.

When it comes to diabetes, we always hear about low glycemic index foods. Let us first learn more about glycemic index to understand the concept o this Type 2 Diabetic diet plan for Indians (1500 calories)

What is Glycemic Index ?

The glycemic index is the capacity of a particular food as to how quickly it can raise the blood sugar level. The foods which are quickly digested and release glucose immediately to raise the blood sugar levels have a high glycemic index. whereas those foods which take longer to digest and release glucose slowly in the bloodstream are the ones with the low glycemic index.

Researches have proved that low glycemic index foods are better for the health of diabetics and those who are prone to diabetes. Constantly high levels of sugar in the blood vessel can damage these blood vessels causing greater threat and irreversible diseases of heart and other organs in the body.

Glycemic index categorization –

Glycemic – Indexย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  ย  ย ย  Diabetes

Highย ย  70 and Aboveย ย ย ย  To be avoided completely
Mediumย ย  56 – 69ย ย ย ย  Can be eaten in restriction
Lowย ย  55 and Belowย ย ย ย  Should be included liberally

Dr. David Jenkins, professor of nutrition at the University of Toronto has developed a low glycemic index diet to benefit all the diabetics. On his guidelines, we have tried planning a Type 2 Diabetic diet plan for Indians (1500 calories)

Glycemic Index of some common foods –

FoodGI
Roasted and salted peanuts14
Cherries22
Whole milk27
Skimmed milk32
Apples38
Pears38
Apple juice, unsweetened40
Noodles40
All-Bran42
Oranges44
Orange juice46
Brown Rice50
Banana55
Basmati Rice58
Honey58
Ice cream61
Coca-cola63
White bread70
Watermelon72
Cornflakes84

ย Foods to include in a Low Glycemic Diabetic Diet –

In Type 2 Diabetic diet plan for Indians (1500 calories) you can include the following foods.

1] Bran can be added in your flours to reduce the GI and increase fiber.

2] whole wheat bread, Multi-grain bread with broken grains are healthier than refined flour bread.

3] The majority of vegetables are low in the glycemic index and can be liberally used in day to day life. On must always eat a variety of vegetables than repeating the same ones every day.

4] Include brown rice over white rice.

5] You can enjoy the whole wheat varieties of pasta and noodles. These are easily available in supermarkets these days.

6] salads should be a compulsory part of both main meals. This provides fiber and helps in the slow release of glucose in the bloodstream.

When to eat sweets and other high carb fruits like mangoes?

Diabetics who are fond of eating desserts and sweets get depressed when they have to keep avoiding it all the time. But this is not so. you can have sweets and mango (1-2 pieces ) during mid meals / In between 2 meals. Or early morning hours when the blood sugar levels would be lower than usual.

If you are following a Type 2 Diabetic diet plan for Indians (1500 calories), it is always better to avoid eating sweets and fruits along with the meal. As this may lead to sugar spikes in the blood.

This Type 2 Diabetic diet plan for Indians (1500 calories) plan will give you an example of how to place your fruits in eating routine.

Read – List of fruits and vegetables allowed in diabetes; blood sugar level wise.ย

Exercise –

Normally if you ask anybody, you will be told to do morning walks for around an hour. But I think a deeper approach is needed here. To decide what exercise will suit you best, first, check your sugar levels and decide accordingly.

1 ] If fasting Blood sugar level is high:-

Fasting sugar levels are a result of the overnight hepatic output of glucose (produced by the liver during the night, unlikely of what food you ate).ย  To control increased fasting blood sugar levels, morning walks will not be very helpful. You need to walk for 45 mins in the evening or late at night to control the fasting blood sugar level and bring the liver to produce less glucose at night.

2] Postprandial blood sugar levels are high : –

If your pp blood sugar levels are high, this is directly proportional to the food you eat. hence one must eat correctly and walk for 10- 15 mins (slow to medium pace walking) at home or parking area or terrace. These small walks after all 3 main meals will help in better digestion and utilization of already present blood glucose, making room for some more. Hence lowering your pp blood sugar levels.

Morning walks are good for overall control. Hence you must decide on your walk timings based on the current blood sugar level scenario.

yes the value of 8 .1 for Hb A1c is definitely suggestive of diabetes , but before i refer anything , it is better to go to a diabetolos=gist with the reports and take proper treatment . once the medications are prescribed , ill try to help you with a diet chart accordingly. meanwhile you can follow the above mentioned diet plan to get ypur sugar levels to normal.

    Dear Mam

After controlling my diet as pre your plan and with medication for 2 months , my sugar level was brought down to normal levels as cited in my earlier email. As an experimental basis I have stopped taking medicine( 20 DAYS) whist maintaining strict diet plan with regular yoga and brisk walk( 45min ), after checking my FS & PS at an interval of 10 days it is in the ordern of FS(96) PS( 106) & FS( 84) PS(125) with Gylcometer. Adding 10 gigit more when tested in lab still my avg FS would be (90 ) and PS (135) what is your opinion based on these values ?

    Dear Mam

As cited in my earlier comments, although I have controlled my FF to 96( 106) AND pp 110 ( 122) there is no weight gain which I had lost after being diagnosed with TYPE -2 Diabetic I had lost 4 to 5 kgs from 70 to 65. I am trying to regain my weight to 70 but in vain. what to do?

At the time of taking medicine , My weight had slightly increased. But since I had stopped my medicines increase in weight has also been stopped.

    Why is this change ?

Hi Kumar , this is all an effect of sugar on your body ,dont worry about the weight you have lost , you will gradually gain it back . you need to keep a track of your blood sugar for now.

    Hello Mam

As experimental , I had stopped medicine for last 10 days, and as suggested , I did check my FS & PS whos value when checked through accucheck it showed 96 & 110 so lets say it as 106 & 120 for more accurate results if checked in clinic

As suggested , do we need to check every alternative days and then stop medicine ? if so what should be the FS & PS range when checked these alternative days ?

Initially I skipped 1 medicine and now 2 medicines for last 10 days .

Please advise me on the above .. Anyhow following you strict diet plan it has really helped me lot as on date.

      Hi Kumar ,

Wow kumar , excellent. if the blood sugar comes under normal range , then you might not need medicines , but it is advisable to do a proper lab test and then meet your doctor and confirm with him before you stop your medicaions completely.

      Hi Zubair ,

well it has to be gradual . make a note of your curren t levels and weight and follow the diet plan , record the details every week to mark the progress and meet ypur doctor with the details , medicines can be stopped if the BSL comes near normal . but it has to b gradual .. first the dosage will be reduced , then the frequncy and then it can be stoped based on sugar levels

As my FS has come to 106 from 363 and post level come down from 393 to 122 with H1AC1 6.8 , can I make an attempt to stop medicine and maintain strict food diet and other normal physical exercise including rigorous walking for 45 mi at this point of time ?

    What is your opinion ?

      hey kumar ,

wow , that a wonderful change . yes you can attempt , but my advice is please have a glucometer handy and for the first 1 week please check your fasting and pp suar every alternate day . if the sugar levels go very much hay wore , please get in touch with your doctor and restart the medicine .

it is not advisable to stop diabetic medication without proper tracking of sugar levels.

the above given plan will help you in controlling your bsl . try for a week and see , if the sugar comes down , then you can continue with exercises and diet and not get into medicines . but if the blood sugar remains same or increases , you will need medications.

Hi Nikhil , if you are on insulin and still your sugars are so high , you need to get your dosage adjusted accordingly.

you can follow the above mentioned diet . although it is type 2 diabetic diet , but it will suit your requirement and current blood sugar levels.

    Dear Mam

As advised by you , I have started following the diet plan. After initial 3 weeks course of medicine i.e 2 x 500 mg metformin , rigorous walking 45 min and warm up exercise , My FS was 145 present ( Before 363) and After Post Level was 175.( before 393) How many days it might take further to bring my level to 110 & 140 ?

What is your opinion about my changes in sugar levels achieved in 3 weeks time ?

Can I reduce my sugar level further by restricting to just 1 x 500 mg of metformin in a day or no medicine , but just following very strict food diet, exercise , walking and controlling stress to a larger extent ?

no you both are not diabetics. your fasting sugar should be greater than 126 mg /dl to be declared as diabetics . but you both are prediabetics as your sugar levels are a little higher thn normal . so you can follow the above mentioned diet to control your blood sugars

      Hi ,

Yes you can continue with ayurvedic medication . Initial weight loss in diabetes is common . once your blood sugars stabalize and remain constant , the body metabolism will normalize and you will gain back some weight . you dont need to do a weight gain diet , just eat healthy . if you feel low on stamina and energy , you can add D protein powder to your glass of milk every day and consume.

you can follow the above mentioned 1500 calorie diet plan , this will help you in maintaining the current weight. also remember that initial weight loss is a sign of blood sugar rise . and hence you too lost weight . but if proper care is not taken weight increases.

to maintain the weight , reduce your walking time from 45 mins to 30 mins . and walk for 10 mins after each meal to control pp sugar level.

      Hi ,

your levels are innn control, but to undergo cataract operation you need to further get the sugar levels under control . although if it is urgent , doctors manage it by giving insulin dosages. b.s is the short form of blood sugar . you havent mentioned your age and medicine types. this decides which diabetic type you fall in
