Type 2 Diabetic Diet Plan for Indians (1500 calories)

Last Updated on February 19, 2020 | RD, Payal Banka (Registered Dietitian) 395 Comments

” Diabetes ” a word that may bring chills down your spine when detected for yourself or for a loved one. The first thing that comes to your mind after being diagnosed as a diabetic is, ” What do I eat ? ” ” What is a carbohydrate?” and ” what is low glycemic index food ? “.  Well, we would make the answer simple for you in this Type 2 Diabetic diet plan for Indians (1500 calories).Type 2 Diabetic diet plan for Indians (1500 calories)

I am sure that by now you already know the basics of what happens in diabetes, and what is insulin. Probably you must have heard from a lot of people that you need to drink a glass of Bitter-gourd juice (karela) juice every morning and avoid sugar to the fullest. In a way, most people think that after being diagnosed with diabetes, they lose their freedom to eat tasty food. But this is not true, you can still enjoy the liberty of eating what you wish to eat. All you need is to maintain a balance over the food you eat and the exercises you do.

When it comes to diabetes, we always hear about low glycemic index foods. Let us first learn more about glycemic index to understand the concept o this Type 2 Diabetic diet plan for Indians (1500 calories)

What is Glycemic Index ?

The glycemic index is the capacity of a particular food as to how quickly it can raise the blood sugar level. The foods which are quickly digested and release glucose immediately to raise the blood sugar levels have a high glycemic index. whereas those foods which take longer to digest and release glucose slowly in the bloodstream are the ones with the low glycemic index.

Researches have proved that low glycemic index foods are better for the health of diabetics and those who are prone to diabetes. Constantly high levels of sugar in the blood vessel can damage these blood vessels causing greater threat and irreversible diseases of heart and other organs in the body.

Glycemic index categorization –

Glycemic – Index                 Diabetes

High   70 and Above     To be avoided completely
Medium   56 – 69     Can be eaten in restriction
Low   55 and Below     Should be included liberally

Dr. David Jenkins, professor of nutrition at the University of Toronto has developed a low glycemic index diet to benefit all the diabetics. On his guidelines, we have tried planning a Type 2 Diabetic diet plan for Indians (1500 calories)

Glycemic Index of some common foods –

FoodGI
Roasted and salted peanuts14
Cherries22
Whole milk27
Skimmed milk32
Apples38
Pears38
Apple juice, unsweetened40
Noodles40
All-Bran42
Oranges44
Orange juice46
Brown Rice50
Banana55
Basmati Rice58
Honey58
Ice cream61
Coca-cola63
White bread70
Watermelon72
Cornflakes84

Foods to include in a Low Glycemic Diabetic Diet –

In Type 2 Diabetic diet plan for Indians (1500 calories) you can include the following foods.

1] Bran can be added in your flours to reduce the GI and increase fiber.

2] whole wheat bread, Multi-grain bread with broken grains are healthier than refined flour bread.

3] The majority of vegetables are low in the glycemic index and can be liberally used in day to day life. On must always eat a variety of vegetables than repeating the same ones every day.

4] Include brown rice over white rice.

5] You can enjoy the whole wheat varieties of pasta and noodles. These are easily available in supermarkets these days.

6] salads should be a compulsory part of both main meals. This provides fiber and helps in the slow release of glucose in the bloodstream.

When to eat sweets and other high carb fruits like mangoes?

Diabetics who are fond of eating desserts and sweets get depressed when they have to keep avoiding it all the time. But this is not so. you can have sweets and mango (1-2 pieces ) during mid meals / In between 2 meals. Or early morning hours when the blood sugar levels would be lower than usual.

If you are following a Type 2 Diabetic diet plan for Indians (1500 calories), it is always better to avoid eating sweets and fruits along with the meal. As this may lead to sugar spikes in the blood.

This Type 2 Diabetic diet plan for Indians (1500 calories) plan will give you an example of how to place your fruits in eating routine.

Read – List of fruits and vegetables allowed in diabetes; blood sugar level wise.

– 1200 calories diet plan for diabetes and weight loss.

Exercise –

Normally if you ask anybody, you will be told to do morning walks for around an hour. But I think a deeper approach is needed here. To decide what exercise will suit you best, first, check your sugar levels and decide accordingly.

1 ] If fasting Blood sugar level is high:-

Fasting sugar levels are a result of the overnight hepatic output of glucose (produced by the liver during the night, unlikely of what food you ate).  To control increased fasting blood sugar levels, morning walks will not be very helpful. You need to walk for 45 mins in the evening or late at night to control the fasting blood sugar level and bring the liver to produce less glucose at night.

2] Postprandial blood sugar levels are high : –

If your pp blood sugar levels are high, this is directly proportional to the food you eat. hence one must eat correctly and walk for 10- 15 mins (slow to medium pace walking) at home or parking area or terrace. These small walks after all 3 main meals will help in better digestion and utilization of already present blood glucose, making room for some more. Hence lowering your pp blood sugar levels.

Morning walks are good for overall control. Hence you must decide on your walk timings based on the current blood sugar level scenario.

      Hi Manpreet ,

before you start with insulin , if you wish , we can try and control your sugar levels with diet and some exercises , if iit still doesnt come down , i am afraid insulin is the remedy . and dont worry , it is not the insulin that damages the kidnwy or other organs of your body , rather it is the blood sugar . if a person’s blood sugar remains above normal for a long period of time , slowly the blood vessels starts changing and thats how certain organs like kidney gets affected . but you dont have to worry dear , you are young and you can definitely ciontrol your sugars to normal with a little diet and exercises. please write to me at care@dietburrp.com if you are interested in getting a personalized diet plan .

Hi Payal, My mother aged 66, weighing 63kgs has been a diabetic (165~~240) since 11 yrs. She hasn’t been on any medication all along and generally on low sugar diet with occasional sweet binges. When we recently had her sugar levels, as she was complaining dryness in the tongue making her feel constantly thirsty, we got her Master Health checkup done and sugar levels was 425 F, 595 PP requiring immediate medication. She has been taking on Glucomet GP2, Humulin N twice a day since a few days now. She has also got hypertension averaging 170/100 and is on medication for that. She has been advised on low fat diabetic diet. Given her BMR index(1186 cal/) Is 1500 cal plan suitable for her as she is moderately active generally managing all household chores and quite brisk. Please advise. Thanks

    Hello Mam

After controlling my T2 diabetic using both Medicine, Brisk walk daily for 50 min , light yoga, I have brought dowm my Sugar levels to FF 82-95 & pp 105 -135. As an experimental I stopped medicine for last 45 days and still maintained my FF in the range of 85 -95 & PP 125 -135 After maintaining / following your strict Food diet plan and Brisk walking for 50 Min.

Last 2 days back , Instead of checking my PP exactly after 2 hrs , i did so after 2 hrs 20 min and in-between I had small cup of sugar less tea .and my PP showed sudden jump of 15 digit from 120 to 135. While measuring My pp i was lightly stresse /anxiety due to works related issue. Why is this can you please advise.

stress and anxiety can be a reason . have you sopped medicines on your own ? or with doctors reference . please let a doctor know about it . It is a good thing that you have been able to control your sugar levels with our diet plan and exercises. but its always better to be sure . and a doctor can give you a proper assurance for the same

    Dear Payal Madam,

I am 38yrs male, 5′ 5.5″, 61 Kg working in IT sector (sitting job) and having Type-2 diabetes with following HbA1c results. Following diet plan is prepared by me and I want to ensure whether my diet is proper or missing something and how much calories I am taking.

    HbA1c
    1. Feb-2016 7.9
    2. Aug-2016 6.1

Following are First time tested in July 2016 I do not know whether my diet reduced or increased the numbers.
    1. CHOLESTEROL 232 (< 200)
    2. TRIGLYCERIDE 319 (< 150)
    3. VLDL 64 (< 55)
    4. NON-HDL 196 (< 160)
    5. TSH (ULTRASENSITIVE) 8.04 (0.27 – 5.5) [TRIGLYCERIDE may be high due to high TSH]

    After brushing teeth
    1. First glass of water @ room temprature with one lemon. Second glass of water to clear lemon residuals over teeth. Sometime I drink third glass.
    2. 1.5-2 cup tea with very little sugar. (I am allergic to sugar free tablets, swollen eyes and itching over face)

    Breakfast (500mg Metformin)
    1. One Pratha (normal, ajwain, onion or doah prepared from daal) fried in pomace olive oil.
    2. One bowl (250gm) home made curd from double-tonned or tonned milk with 2.5gm turmeric power, approx 1gm black pepper power and approx 1gm cinnamon power (ground at home).
    3. 1-1.5 cup tea with very little sugar.
    4. Bicosule Capsule for B12.
    5. 60K D3 tablet once in a month.
    6. Thyroidinum 3x (2 tabs).

    Lunch
    1. 3 Roti
    2. Sabji (Prepared in olive oil)

    Dinner (500mg Metformin)
    1. 2 or 3 Roti.
    2. One bowl (250gm) daal. (Tadka prepared in olive oil).
    OR
Biggest impact on fasting blood sugar by having, without roti, one big bowl of boiled Bengal-Gram (Kaale Channe), Channa-Dal, Rajmah (Kidney-Beans) or White-Gram (Kabuli-Channa) topped with tomato, onion, green chillis upto feeling of fullness.
    3. Thyroidinum 3x (2 tabs).

    Before Bed
Half or Full glass of warm double-tonned or tonned milk with 2.5gm turmeric power, approx 1gm black pepper power and approx 1gm cinnamon power prepared at home.

On Saturday and Sunday I give break to turmeric, pepper and cinnamon.

Note: I had pale white nails with shape like clubbing of digits. Now, nails are turning pinkish and also started getting flatter. I used to had swelling inside nostals which is sub siding now and also phelgum has reduced drasticially.

Hi Sameer your diet seems fine . you just need to inclue some salads with lunch and have 2 cups of green tea without sugar and 1 glass of buttermilk post lunch . gap between lunch and dinner needs to be shortened by adding a small meal there . it can be a salad . rest all looks good.

If yes is your answer, why you haven’t included in your diet plan.
Also comment on these food items also
    1)papaya
    2)sprouts
    3)Poha
    4)Bambino
    5)butter milk

Are these good for diabetic patient type 2????

      hi varun ,

the fenugreek seed powder n the juice of mentioned ingredients are good in lowering bsl. but make sure this doesnt lead her to hypoglycemia .. she must xconsume something whin 45n – 60 mins.

i havent included this in my sample diet plan because this is a general plamn and a lot of people follow my plans. i dnt get all te detAILS and if this juice causes hypoglycemia to even 1 out of my 100 readers then it is my responsibility and i am here with good intentions to help. hence i dont take the risk .

early morning on empty stomach , the bsl is already low and such hypoglycemic drinks can do bad if it is not follwed with a meal. so you take care of tht.

      about other foods –

1)papaya – yes you xan give as a midmeal
2)sprouts – yes in limitations. not bcause of sugar but digestive issues.
3)Poha – yes in limitation , once a week is ok
4)Bambino – do you mean bambino vermicilly ? she can have whole wheat vermicilly liberaly. but if it is maida or rice based vermicilly, then im afraid it will do more bad than gud. if you meabnt any other product of bambino thn please clarify.
      5)butter milk- yes.

      Hi salman,

is she on insulin ? im afraid you will have to meet a dietician in person and get a diet prescribed for her , as a lot of details will be required to suggest a proper diet plan that will suit her condition as well as ,edical issues and medicine dose . i do not have anything ready that you can reffer for her . Appologies.
