Burning Body Fat For Weight Loss!

Last Updated on June 21, 2019 | RD, Payal Banka (Registered Dietitian) 261 Comments

Want to start burning body fat for weight loss? In this article, I will explain to you the best approach to calorie burning in order to achieve better weight loss results. Let’s find out how you can start burning body fat for weight loss.

burning body fat for weight loss

The human body is designed in a way that it can use carbs, fat or protein to derive energy. The body decides the source to use based on various factors like availability and type of activity, among other things. Particularly while exercising, the body does not choose to burn fat immediately. hence short duration exercises may not be very effective in burning body fat. Here is a short description of the way the human body uses two different sources of energy.

Burning body fat for weight loss

Everything you eat is metabolized and simple sugars are formed in the body. These sugars satisfy the immediate energy requirements of the body. The excess simple carbs are then converted to glycogen and stored in the body. These glycogen stores are called upon when blood sugar begins depleting.

Stage 1

0 minutes to 15 minutes –  During this phase, the body uses simple sugar in the blood for its energy requirements. Those who eat a low carb diet have limited glycogen stores in the body. They may lack stamina and feel tired immediately.

Those who work out for short durations tend to burn only carbs and not really burn body fat for weight loss. This may help in maintaining the current weight but, not really in losing weight.

Stage 2

15 minutes to 30 minutes – As the training session progresses further,  the body shifts from using simple carbs to utilizing glycogen stores. In order to utilize these glycogen stores to the fullest, one must increase the intensity of the workout. Once the glycogen stores are utilized the body turns towards burning body fat for weight loss.

Stage 3 – Burning body fat for weight loss

After 35  minutes of exercise, the body enters the fat burning zone. In this phase, the maximum calories burnt are derived from body fats. How much body fat you burn will depend on the training intensity. A lot of people either stop working out by this time or get tired and reduce the intensity, by doing yoga or other slow exercises. You will be at the losing end in such cases. Although weight loss will occur if you are following the energy deficit law, you may not be burning body fat for weight loss.

Training Intensity and Burning body fat for weight loss

Training intensity is as important as training duration in deciding whether the body should be burning carbs or burning body fat for weight loss.

Recent research has suggested that a long-duration, the moderate-intensity aerobic workout is much more effective for weight loss as compared to high-intensity workout. In these long duration exercises, the body utilizes its glycogen stores effectively and starts burning body fat for weight loss.

During high-intense training sessions such as interval running, the human body tends to prefer carbohydrates as the main source of energy as these may be easily accessed and used to fulfill energy needs during the exercise.

Conclusion

The human body uses its source of energy depending upon factors like workout intensity, workout durations, body types, etc, You will lose weight as long as you are successful in creating the required energy deficit.

The best way to lose weight is by using both energy sources, burning carbs as well as burning body fat for weight loss.

  • Increase training duration and intensity.
  • Alternate between a hard interval workout and a low cardio session
  • Develop good eating habits if you want to keep the weight off for life. No matter how much you push yourself on the treadmill, you can never compensate for bad eating habits. So here is how you can burn fat without getting fried

Payal hi. I find your information very useful. In simple way you explained a lot. But my question is how much calories is there in normal indian diet meal?and how much we should cut?ex i am eating more than 3000 calories per day. I have to cut it half. Is it right?

      February 26, 2015 at 2:03 pm

      Hi Bhagyalakshmi,

i am glad you like our content. there is no particular count of how much an indian meal can contribute, a lot of factors decide that … and quantity consumption and veg / non veg meal / fried / roasted etc are a few of them …

the simpler way is to calulate your total intake of calories and fo wightloss just substract 500 calories from your total intake to start with .. so if you are consuming 3000 cals currently, you can cut down 500 cals and take a total of 2500 cals in a day , while at the same time trying to burn 500 calories per day by exercising . this will help you lose 3 kgs in a month .

      hi ,

your diet seems good . it should help you for some days .. to bring in changes you can stop eating chapati for 1 mal and take other stuff like brown rice , khichadi , daliya , upama .. continue this pattern for some time , and if your weight seems to be stuck , then do the same with dinner ….

exercise wise you are doing enuf. if your weight gts stuck, change the timings .

Thanks for reading at Dietburrp. I know you must be putting in your best possible efforts, but with pcos, and pcod its a little difficult to lose weight. 1 kg in a month is really not bad. you will slowly and steadly achieve your health goal. just give it some time. Hi Rashmi,

it is hard to analyse your diet based on the info you have provided. its not only abt the noumber of roti but also abt fiber and other nutrients. overeatin g and under eating can both lead to malnutrition, which inturn may cause weight gain in some people. sometimes changing the pattern of food and exercise also helps. if you want me to analyse your regime and plan a diet plan personalized for you, please see this page. – https://www.dietburrp.com/diet-services/

      Hi Lalitha,

Thanks for reading at dietburrp. There may be various reasons of weight gain . 1 ] if your diet intake increases after starting with exercises , weight will rise instead of reducing. plz check your diet. Other reason can be measures if you have taken your body analysis test , and know the earlier fat % and lean body % and muscle mass weight. you can do a comparitive study of the two readings of before and current. sometimes some people who have an atheletic built, gain muscle weight when they exercise. so although exercise is helpful and you may have toned up your body and look healthy and reduced in inches , but if you measure your weight, it would have increased due to muscle mass gain. or 3 rd reason can be due to your thyroid levels may have gone below normal. in which case medication dosage needs to be reconsidered. it can be any of the above three. you are a better judge of your body … try to figure out what of the above may be causing this and then we can work out to solve that issue.

    Hi Payal,

I am a stout guy at 6 ft and 98 kilos, I do weight training regularly. My goal now is to reduce weight as I just entered my thirties. All I wanted to know is how to effectively burn fat for weight loss after the usage of glycogen. Is cardio to be done first followed by weight training or weight training followed by cardio at the end? Please shed some light on this. Your advice would be of great help here. Thank you.

      Hi Rohit,

Thank you for reading at DietBurrp. The above given article clarifies a lot about your question. I f ypou are in for weight loss, and have a goal of losing more than 10 kgs, then you have to keep changing your routine to
15 mins – warm up, next 15 min – treadmill, cross trainer , cycle, rower. and the next 15 min heavy weight lifting. (anerobic exercise like weight lifiting helps in losing fat more than any other exercise)

After doing this for a month or 2 , you would notice that these exercise are not helping in further weight reduction, this mostly is because the body is now used to the routine and has completely adjusted and adpated this exercise. so you would need to bring about some changes , which would involve , an added 10 min treadmill jogging after the anerobic exercise , or combining both aerobic and anerobic exercise by walking on the treadmill with weights either on your back or holding in hands, whichever is safer and convinient. and you would see miracles happening.

Walking with weights on the treaadmill has helped so many of my clients move theri plateaued weight.

      * caution – walking on the treadmill with weights should be done in front of an instructor as it is a little risky for the beginners. you might lose balance and hurt yourself. hence practise this act safely and with an instructor.
