10 common mistakes dieters make

So many people go on a diet, only to end up disappointed. Why is the success rate so low, you may ask. After analyzing scores of dieting cases, it was seen that there are some concepts that may be going wrong, leading to disappointment in weight loss.

  1. Starving during the day and eating only one meal at night: Though this may sound repetitive, it is vital to weight loss and so frequently ignored, that one is forced to remind potential dieters of this.
  2. Eating sprouts on a day when you are also eating cooked food: The combination of sprouts and regular cooked food is very fattening. If you are eating sprouts, then do not add anything with it. The best time to eat sprouts is before your workout or early in the morning. But when you eat a bowl of sprouts along with your lunch / dinner, then the sprouts will only form gases and will not be that helpful for weight loss. When having sprouts, do not mix it with any other cooked food.
  3. Drinking juices (very fattening) and coconut water (good for kidney, not so good when trying to knock off flab).
  4. Eating plenty of ketchup, pickles.
  5. Eating too many of the diet foods like diet chocolate, diet fizzy drinks, diet cookies (heavy on fat and loaded with aspartame which in high doses also prevents weight loss).
  6. Eating too many carbs : Often repeated but true because some people with a carb-sensitive profile do not lose weight despite being on a low calorie diet.
  7. Drinking mega-doses of milk and consuming lot of dairy in the form of curd, paneer, cheese:  Too much of dairy makes the elimination system sluggish, a sensible amount of dairy suits some people but not all blood groups.
  8. Drinking tea/coffee more than 8 cups a day: Creates toxins within the system which stagnates weight loss.
  9. Drinking soup at night does not suit women as it promotes water retention and increases weight.
  10. Eating dals at night: Too heavy to digest and stays as calories. And here are a few more:
  11. A lot of people consider dals as proteins whereas most dals have only 30% protein so their protein content is 1/3 that of egg and dals have 65-70% carbs (so a lot of dals can add to your carbs too).
  12. Doing fad diets like only vegetables and fruits for 7 days will  always lead to rebound weight gain.
  13. Worrying endlessly:  Sounds strange but true, the more you fret about weight loss the less likely it is going to fall, so cheer up, go slow and 1 year of consistent weight loss is far better than a lifetime of dieting!

Hello mam! I’m 19 years old and stand at 4’11. I weigh only 35 kgs. No matter how much I eat I don’t gain any weight. I have had all my body checkups and everything is perfect. Could you please suggest me a good diet for subsequent weight gain under 2-3 months?

your meal intervals are very high and food intake is concentrated. according to what you ahave told , you are eating around 800 cals in breakfast , 200 cals in lunch and 800- 900 cals in dinner. the body doesnt function well in this routine . forget losing weight , you will face serious gastric troubles and acidity. please change the routine . eat normal at all 3 times . you can refer to 1200 calorie indian diet plan for weight loss on dietburrp.

      Hi Deepika,

to get effective results for weight loss, you need to find out the reason behind your weight and work to correct that . if your weight is bcause of sedentary lifestyle , exercises will give you a perfect weight loss solution . if your food is th reason , then you need to correct your r=eating habits to lose weight . if both are missing , weight loss will become difficult . so there is no third way out , you need to find solutions to have a healthy lifestyle wirth proper food and exercise .

      Hi Cheeku ,

1] yes sprouts are very good . you should have it pre workout rather than post workout.

2] yes it will help . dont take milk with the meal … have it in between meals . also add skimmed milk powder to your glass of milk to improve the protein wuality and quantity

    Mam,

You have given a list that is followed by people who wish to lose weight and is a “not to follow list”. Is it safe to say that to follow it would result in weight gain? I actually have a pretty good muscle mass ratio but I’m too skinny.

I have already did a lot of personal surfing on gaining weight and I get a lot of mixed responses, so, curtly, I am lost. I am 6’1″ (in ft.) and weigh 60kg only.

Would it be okay if I take a lot of sprouts in my diet as an after workout evening meal?

Is drinking full cream milk twice a day helpful in weight gain or does it result in weight loss?

      Hi Martina ,

another reader had asked me a similar question some time back . there is nothing wrong in eating dal for lunch while on a weight loss diet . but if your dietician has asked you to avoid it , there must be some reason behind it . diet plans are based on lifestyle and body types of an individual , same dit plan will not help every one to lose weight . please reason out with your dietician for why she has asked you to avoid it . i am no one to judge any other dieticians diet.

      Hi Martina ,

you can reason out with her … actually if she has asked you to avoid dal , there must be something she must have observed in your body pattern / medical history / weigh loss pattern . she must have personalized your diet based on your case , it will be wrong on my part to ask you to intake dal without knowing the details behind her advice. you can actually clarify with her . normaly i do not avoid dals for lunch with my clients.

I do weight training as well. I have got muscle’s too. Bt this extra laayer of fat specifically in the upper back and abdomen portions looks a bit odd with my physical structure. Kindly provide me a diet by which I can reduce these extra 12-15 KGS within 3-4 months.

Hi, I would like to know how to do this right. I only need to loose 10-15 kgs. My age is 18 and height 170 m. I tried dieting many times, never seriously though, but last year I had enough of it and stopped eating. I lost 5 kgs and got troubles with my stomach acid.
It’s okay now with the stomach. But I got the weight back and with 2 kgs more. I know that was wrong, but I was desperate. Now I wish to loose weight in about 3 months. It’ll be okay if I loose at least 10 kgs. But I want to do it right this time, so I won’t get sickness with the stomach aggain. It was painfull… Please help me. :(

yes such restrictive diets have a lot of sideeffects when followed for more than a few day. weight rebounding being one of them . i would not suggest you to continu with such a restrictive diet for long if your goal is permanent weight loss. you may rather try following the 1200 calorie diet plan we have on dietburrp. they are very efective for weight loss.

    Hi Payal,

I am a 27 year old guy weighing 69kgs standing 5’’6 tall. I got a layer of fat around the waistline (not a bulk amount) that I am trying to shed to improve my fitness and look better.
I have currently adjusted my diet something like this (only for weekdays) :
    1. Roti-Sabji for breakfast,
    2. One cup of coffee 30mins after breakfast.
    3. One cup of green tea at around 12:00
    4. Soaked Green Moong + Few soaked almonds at lunch time.
    5. One cup of green tea at around 15:00
    6. One apple/ Orange sometime later in the afternoon.
    7. Two boiled eggs + 200ml buttermilk (chaas) in the evening.
    8. One cup of green tea before workout (mostly cardio).
    9. One cup of tea 30mins after workout
    10. Dinner with little rice content, a small bowl of daal, and fish/chicken/egg curry.

Looking forward to your feedback. Thanks in advance.

      Hi ,

your diet seems fine. because your goal is for inch loss, exercises are more crutial . i hpope you are doing the right kind of exercises to be able to lose belly fat .

diet wise , all luks gud . just that rice in dinner should be avoided . you can have brown rice / oats , broken wheat , instead of rice with the mentioned curries ? veggies.

Just make sure you drink a lot of water . 10 mins medium paced walk after lunch and dinner helps in inch loss.

      Hi Priya ,

you mentioned you delivered your baby in august . are you breastfeeding the baby ? if yes , please do not rush to diet , or your willingness to lose weight will affect the baby’s nutritional status and growth . you must weight till the baby is on his own for covering his nutritional needs.

i know the urge of getting your pre pregnancy body is too great , but nothing is greater than a mothers responsibility towards baby’s effective growth and deve;opment.

but this does not mean you need to over look your weight . start now by starting 30 – 40 mins walking . at first do medium pace walks and then increase your speed gradually . avoid all fried and junck and sweet food that give you unnecessary cals , and eat only healthy food.

this is a good start and in n4 months time when your baby is on top feeds and rely less on you , you can start weight loss. with diets .
