South Indian Diet Plan for Weight Loss (1200 calories)

Last Updated on February 19, 2020 | RD, Payal Banka (Registered Dietitian) 630 Comments

South Indian Diet Plan for Weight Loss – You might just laugh out loud. The titillating aromas of sambars and rasams can actually kill your desire for weight loss. South Indian cuisine is as rich as a Kanjivaram saree. But this richness will add on to the waist size of each saree wearer.

The healthier side of the traditional south Indian platter consists of a variety of koshimbiri, which nowadays is as sidelined as its position on the banana leaf. But nothing is impossible if you make up your mind. So here is a 1200 calorie South Indian Diet Plan for Weight Loss.

For eg., you can replace bhendekai gojju with brinjal/onion/tomato, etc., whichever vegetable you desire. Stick to the basic recipes of koshimbir and add varieties so that you don’t get bored with the plan. Do read on how you can lose weight effectively.

How to make a personalized south Indian diet plan for weight loss?

To make a south Indian diet plan for yourself, follow the following steps

  • Calculate your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) to know your basic calorie requirement.
  • Calculate your BMI to know how over-weight you are and how much you really need to lose to be healthy.
  • Analyze your body stats

These indicators will help you figure out a realistic goal. It is not healthy for any woman to aim at reaching 50 kg without a proper plan. 50 may not be healthy for you. The right weight will depend on your body built, your height, your activity levels, and your lifestyles.  I hope this south Indian diet plan for weight loss helps you in achieving your goals. All the best.

But you mention that tea has protein. I first thought you were counting the protein from the milk in tea (still a big number) but you also mention that green tea has protein.

Hi Payal this is Prathosh from chennai ,suprisingly i came across this website as god shown path ,currently i am suffering from obesity and my age is 30 and my weight is 104 kgs .

Please give me a plan to reduce my weight by 25 kg ,because i did research and as per that My BMI is currently 32 ,hence would like to bring it to 25 .

Also i did research and found that in order to lose 25 kg weight ,i need to consume 1660 calories per day .

However need your inputs as well ,I am walking daily 2 kms per day and following a strict diet such as

    Morning

adai dosa -2 with veg sabji

if hungry ,drinking water alone ,.then afternoon- 2 chukka roti and little one cup rice then if hungry drinking water ,evening -lemon tea and mid evening -1 full apple and then 15 mts walk daily ,then dinner ,once again 2 chukka roti and then fruit salad and day ends .

If i follow like this ,will i be able to lose 25 kg in 8 months ,please advise .

    Regards

      Hi Prathosh,

Thank you for reading at Dietburrp. we are glad we were able to help you. to lose weight, you need to exercise for 45 mins at a stretch. kms dont matter. so make sure you walk for 45 mins everyday. and the above mentioned diet is ok , but please add salads , dals / sambar / rasam / eggs to increase protein intake. any diet chart will help you for around a month , but after that weight loss stops. the body gets used to the pattern. it is important to change the pattern every month. for continuous weight loss.

        Hi Payal

Thanks for your response ,just some quick clarifications in your response .

1 please add salads , dals / sambar / rasam / eggs to increase protein intake- if i take these daily ,wont this add to fat or something .

2 ny diet chart will help you for around a month , but after that weight loss stops. the body gets used to the pattern. it is important to change the pattern every month. for continuous weight loss.- Can you please give me an example how to change the pattern for better understanding.

3 Can i eat Unlimited fruits and vegetables be it boiled ,etc if I am hungry etc .

4 Please let me know If i follow the above mentioned diet + walking atleast 45 mts daily will i lose 25 kg in 4 months maximum ????

          Hi Prathosh ,

1 please add salads , dals / sambar / rasam / eggs to increase protein intake- if i take these daily ,wont this add to fat or something .

          – Nope , have these made in as little fat or fat free if possible. your diet lacks protein.

2 ny diet chart will help you for around a month , but after that weight loss stops. the body gets used to the pattern. it is important to change the pattern every month. for continuous weight loss.- Can you please give me an example how to change the pattern for better understanding.

          – you can go for light dinner at first along with proper meals at lunch , then later lighten your lunch as well. then you can change your meal timings.. change meal patterns like if you eat rice, switch to chapatis, or viceversa.

3 Can i eat Unlimited fruits and vegetables be it boiled ,etc if I am hungry etc .
          – yes you can.

4 Please let me know If i follow the above mentioned diet + walking atleast 45 mts daily will i lose 25 kg in 4 months maximum ????
          – no i cannot guarantee. but a healthy weight loss diet along with 45 mins walk can help you lose 3 – 4 kgs in a month.

          Hi Payal

First of all Wish you a very happy new year ,let this year be excellent for you by god blessings and let all your desires be fulfilled .

Payal i want to say diet is going good and fine by gods grace ,but yesterday we had new year eve where i was forced to break my diet and eat something which i have not done since nov 19 2014 ,i had no choice i had veg pulav 3 teaspoon ,curd rice 4 tea spoon and 3 potato i ate and 3 paneer i ate and 2 veg phulka i ate ,good i did is since i knew i couldnt stop without eating this bec other foods i didnt have ,i took all these very little but i ate these only yesterday i was upset that it will again increase my weight by 0.5 kg so to compensate this i walked 7 km payal today for 2 hrs and 30 mts ,is it fine will this compensate payal?

2 this year pongal ,can i eat pongal say atleast for taste 2 or 3 teaspoon payal bec i am going in extreme strict diet which i mentioned u last time and i am afraid will eating this pongal will add weight loss ,pls suggest .

3 also payal ,in case of extreme emergency situation like yesterday if i eat little also can i compensate by burning more calories like today is it fine idea ,pls suggest .

4 last ,once i reach correct weight ,can i maintain my weight payal say i eat lots of oily stuff etc for 1 week continous ,.but at same time walking and doing equal or more activity will it cancel the gain of weight ,.pls tell .

          Appreciate your response payal .

          Take care

you are doing right … dont worry you can have 1/2 bowl pongal … just make sure that you continue with your exercises also on such cheat days.

            Hi Payal .

I am back with results for month 2 of diet .

Before that few pointers . i had only 4 teaspoons of pongal this time and had 5 deep fried vada by mistake in evening so compensated by walking 6 km ,keeping logic 100 calorie per vada and 500 calorie burning of 2 hrs walk is 500 calorie .and i did .

Next similary walked 9 km when i ate pulav, samosa, bhajji by mistake and compensated .

Overall apart from this i did not have any cheat day .

Very strict diet i followed whatever i mentioned previously + walking 2 km daily for 6 days and at times 5 km to 7 km walk whenever there is off .

Nov 19 2014- started diet with Weight 104 kgs .

Dec 19 2014 -lost 3 kgs and became weight 101 kgs

Jan 21 2015 – today i checked weight payal I am suprised myself current weight is 96 kgs and loss of 5 kgs per month .

pls share your valuable thoughts. My goal is to reduce and bring my weight to 80 kgs by july 2015 .

      Hi Manisha,

It is too early to start thinking about weight loss. once your baby is 4 months old, you start with walking for 45 mins . and after the baby turns 7 months , when he does not depend much on you for nutrition, you can start altering your diet , but do not think of going on a low cal diet till your baby is completly on top feeds.

Thanks for reading at dietburrp. firstly , you need to increase your gym timings from 30 mins to 45 – 60 mins. this will help you in losing weight. 30 mins workout will only help in maintaining the weight.

food wise reduce the intake of white rice and replace it with brown rice . and go on lighter dinners . this will help in losing weight

    Respected ma’am,
I’m from Kerala… 21 years old Male. I am lean(luckily). I do moderate exercises every other day. Basically just cardio and stretching. But whatever I do, my belly fat won’t budge. Only reason I can find for it is the diet. Could you suggest me some plan which would aid me in losing the belly fat ?
    Thankssss!!! :) :)

    Mam.
I am 49 years of age, working women, wt 75 kgs and height 157 cm. I would like to lose atleast 25 kgs. Am a south Indian and have the usual south indian food like idli /dosa/upma 3-4 and tea in the morning, rice and veg in the afternoon. Evening is the problem. After office on reaching home, I snack on fried items like chips or bajis. and dinner consisting of rice and fish by 9.30 pm. I use two wheeler, hence exercise is limited except for the 5mt. walk to and fro from office to bus stop.
The main problem area is the thighs and upper arms. Kindly help.
