Calories (Everything you wanted to know about calories )

Last Updated on February 12, 2018 | RD, Payal Banka (Registered Dietitian) 133 Comments

Calories – a word you often come across when watching your weight. Counting calories is a healthy habit and quite the fashionable trend. Just knowing the word or counting calories will not help though. Here is some more information on how calories work. This will bring you a step closer to your health goal.

all about calories

Calories -What are they?

Every living being requires energy to survive. A calorie was first defined by Professor Clement in 1824 as a measurement or unit of energy. Almost everything we eat, except water, provides us with calories. Every food contains some macro and micro nutrients, which, apart from providing calories, have an important role to play in our metabolism.

1 gm of carbohydrate = 4 calories
1 gm of fat = 9 calories
and 1 gm of protein = 4 calories

In terms of micro nutrients, vitamins, minerals, fiber and some plant chemicals do not supply calories.

Calories – How many do you need?

Calorie requirement of every individual is decided based on factors like height, age, weight, sex, the daily activity level and your body composition. The recommended average daily calorie intake is of 1940 calories for women and 2550 for men. Larger people with more muscle, need more calories. Calculate your basic cal requirement.

Calories and weight loss?

For weight loss, it is essential to consume lesser calories and burn excess ones that are stored in the body as fat.

A] Consuming lesser calories – this can be done by keeping a track of calories you consume throughout the day. Simply substitute high calorie food (fried, otherwise fatty, sugar-laden food) with fiber-rich, low-calorie food (whole grain cereals, veggies, fruits, green leafy vegetables). High fiber food also helps you in cutting down on the quantity intake, leading to further calorie reduction. Subtracting 500 calories every day will lead to 500 gm weight loss per week. You may be interested in a sample 1200 cals Indian diet plan for weight loss .

B] Burning excess calories – Increase your physical activity level by changing your lifestyle. Take up an exercise that suits your body and age. Exercise like jogging, running, walking, swimming, gymming and cycling will help in losing those extra calories.

What if I go on an extremely low calorie diet for speedy weight loss?

A very low calorie diet is the gateway to ill-health. It may give you great results in the beginning but, it ultimately leads to muscle loss, fat storage and a slower metabolism. In extreme cases it may also lead to gall stones and cardiac problems. Consuming a minimum of 1100 – 1200 calorie diet every day is the recommendation by medical authorities.

If you are already consuming only a 1200 calorie diet, do not reduce your calorie intake any further. Instead, try to burn around 300 calories through exercise or any sport. Get active by taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Walk from office to your home.

Is the source of the calorie important?

Well, a calorie is a calorie is a calorie… but the calories derived from protein and carbohydrates are considered to be healthier, as a more complex process is required in processing these calories which in turn increase your BMR.

These macro nutrients also have some very important roles to play in the body mechanism.

Fat provides more calories in comparison to carbs and protein. Fat is processed in a simple way, makes body system sluggish. The excess calories are easily converted to fat and this results in weight gain. [You may be interested in reading our article butter vs margarine].

Calories remains a common factor of consideration in case of weight loss, weight gain and weight maintenance. It is all about how you apply the mechanics of calories.

I’m planning to reduce my weight and have joined gym and working out 4 days a week. I met one nutritionist who is an American. He said my calorie intake should be 1500 with
    carbs : 32 grams
    Protiens: 18 g
fat: 12 g in my meals along with Protein shakes.
I’m finding it difficult to find some recipes (both south Indian and North Indian). I saw the above recipe and was impressed. It would be of great help if I get to know the carb content and also some recipes/ dishes I can consume matching my micros. Thank you!

    Hi Payal,

I am a 24 years old girl weighing 70 kgs for 175 cms height. Eventhough i fall under normal BMI rate, I have uneven distrubution of fat (A little tummy, inner or irregular thighs and armpit fat etc..) , but the remaining areas other than particular parts are bony.. becoz of this am not in a perfect shape even though i have normal weight. I also have a bony face which is not suiting my body. Please suggest me few tips to get FULER CHEEKS and EVEN DISTRIBUTION OF WEIGHT. Am lacking in protein and vitamins but hesitant to consume foods rich in those suppliments, becoz am afraid that i might get fat. So kindly suggest me south Indian food along with quantity which i should add in my regular diet.

Note: Being an eggetarian I have limited my food habits to avoid getting fat, now becoming deficient in protiens and vitamins which is leading to white patches on my face and also hair loss :(

      Hi Anu,

forstly , give up on the fear of gaining weight . eat healthy, and you wont be guilty . nutritional deficiency is worse than being fat. so please give away the fear, and eat healthy food . for even distribution of fat , only exercises can help . to lose hip and thigh weight, you need to walk / jog for 45 mins everyday.

Hi, I am a 39 year old female, 5′ 3″, medium build and had joined gym for a month. But I discontinued it since I started feeling too tired and sleepy after workouts and the fatigue continued even after I stopped gym. For a long time I didn’t realise the reason. Only recently a doctor friend pointed out that it might be due to muscle loss and suggested a protein supplement. I started getting back to normalcy within days of that! Could you suggest any good protein rich diet and protein supplements?

      Hi Vaibhavi ,

Your body must have gotten used to the exercises and walking you do and now adjusts to whatever little calories you are intakingf. this happens in a lot of cases where despite of all efforts you dont lose a bit. breaking this plateau requires a lot of patience …. here is what you can do …….. exercise wise – stop doing what you are already doing for a week … and then you surprise your body with a new activity .. for ex – you have been walking all these days , so now change your activity to swimming / zumba dancing / skatting / gyming / playing badminton or lawn tennis … whatever suits you best. tai chi and kick boxing and pillates work excellently in such cases., i know its hard to find time and availabilty of such sports around you .. but if you want to get there .. you need to find harder !!

Food wise – surprise your body yet agin by co nsuming food stuffs that you never did .. it changes your metabolic graph and hence makes you lose weight …. ex – if you have been eating wheat and rice as staples so far … dont eat them for an entire week , and consume other cereals like bajra , jowar , or ragi …. this funda has worked superbly with my clients .. you can try and see if it suits you too ..

when you work out and burn calories in gym , or using any other activity, and then completly stop it , you might gain weight. the best way is whether or not you can continue gyming, but walk for 30 mins a day to be able to maintain thatt lost weight. Hi Susan,

Thanks for reading at Dietburrp. Yes a low Gi diet would help you . Please see this chart , it is specially designed for diabetics and is low on GI to. –

But i seriously dont recommend any meal replacements as they can not be a permanent solution to your problem . i understanbd your concern of rising bsl after food . but you can still manage the BSL by walking for 10 – 15 mins after each meal and drinking a glass of warm water and lemon or green tea after meal. this increases the glucose uptake by blood cell and controls the sugar levels. try it for a week n test your sugars to know how well you are benefitting. if not , i am afraid you ll have to increas your medicine dosage with doctors advice.

      Hi Dinesh ,

If the diet is not in your hands to control, atleast control on the quantity of food intake. do not over eat and get some fruits and veggies and have every 3 hourly, to avoid large quantity intake at meal times.

exercise is going to be your life saver … join a gym if possible, if not, go for early morning or evening walks and jogs . this will help you lose weight

      Hi Leo,

Thank you for reading at dietburrp. Actually i do not advocate any crash diets, and GM diet is amongst them. they do more harm then good. you might lose weight but along with that you would also lose hair, glow on your skin and elasticity, making it look dull, rough and old. i would suggest you to change your exercise routine. read this article to know how you can increase the effectiveness of weight loss.
