Is Rice Healthy? Is Rice Good for Weight Loss?

Last Updated on March 18, 2021 | RD, Payal Banka (Registered Dietitian) 122 Comments

is rice healthy

Is Rice Healthy? Can you eat rice and still lose weight?  This is most common question that arises when starting a diet. While talking of weight loss we hear so many suggestions – eat this and eat that. But have you noticed that in the midst of the high fiber daliya (wheat porridge) and oats, and high protein sprouts and almonds, we often neglect the items that we consume on a daily basis like rice. In the quest for weight loss, rice is underestimated due to its high carb content. Let us find an answer to this niggling question , “Is rice healthy ?”

Is Rice Healthy?

Rice is a staple food in South and East India. All types of rice can be categorized under two basic categories:

Brown rice – It  is produced by removing the hull (outermost layer) from the rice kernel. This process does very little or no damage  to the nutritional value of the rice and avoids unnecessary loss of nutrients that further processing may cause.

White rice –  When brown rice is completely  milled and polished it converts into white rice. The processing extends the shelf life of rice but results in loss of many nutrients like dietary fiber, minerals (iron, manganese, zinc, selenium and phosphorus), vitamins (B vitamins including vitamin B3, B6 and folic acid),  and essential fatty acids.

Is Rice Healthy? What to choose – Brown or white rice ?

Well, definitely not the white rice. White rice is high in carbs and low in fiber, Hence it is easier to digest than whole grain breads or brown rice. It converts starch into glucose faster. This raises the  sugar levels in blood rapidly contributing to hyper glycemia in diabetics. It may also lead to  weight gain and obesity.

On the other hand, Brown rice  is a good source of fiber, minerals like  magnesium, zinc, iron, and B vitamins, while a moderate source of protein. Rice bran (fiber in brown rice) and rice bran oil (oil in brown rice) can help reduce your blood cholesterol levels. So, if you ask me, is rice healthy or unhealthy, well I will ask you to replace white rice with brown rice, you can supplement your weight loss efforts , reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes and hyper-cholesterolemia and improve your overall health.

The resistant starch theory

In simple terms resistant starch is the starch present in food but becomes unavailable to body after digestion (It will not be broken down to glucose). It means it will not be absorbed by the body and act like a fiber . The starch in the rice can be converted to resistant starch.

Converting the starch in rice into resistant starch

– Cook rice in excess water in a microwave or an iron vessel.

– Discard the excess water after cooking.

– Cool the cooked rice and reheat in the Microwave.

– Let it cool down and reheat again before eating.

when you cool and reheat the cooked rice, its starch undergoes modification in its chemical bonding structure, thus becoming unavailable for digestion. this starch acts like a fiber, attaches itself to the unhealthy fat and gets excreted as it is without imparting the carbs to you. so now you can enjoy eating your rice without having to worry about its starch.

Whether the question ” is rice healthy ?” bothers you or not, consider making a few changes. If you are a rice fan, make sure you couple your white rice with a high fiber dish. For eg , have your white rice with vegetable raita, or mix vegetable dal, or  sambar. Or simply make a vegetable pulao. Always eat it in a limited quantity.

All the macro nutrients whether  protein, fat or carbs  play an important role in the functions of body. You can’t simply cut any one of them completely and expect to be healthy. The key lies in eating everything in moderation. Excess of any one of these nutrient may corrupt the normal functionality. So stop worrying about whether is rice healthy?  And give attention to the quantity consumption of it. Avoid making mistakes while on diet.  Here are the 10 common mistakes that dieters generally make.

      Hi Riya ,

the diet you have mentione is healthy and will help in weight loss. just increase your workout timings to 45 mins of treadill walking and then yoga or a different session for yoga if your timing permits

    Hello ,

I just came across this website. I was going through diet plan mentioned here but did not find much information on RED Rice. Can you please advise if red rice is good for weight loss. I am having red rice for last month and so and found it bit filling even with smaller portions. I just wanted to make sure whether I should have red rice or not. Thanks you

Mam I am 19 years old.i am 176 cm and my weight is 74kg.my mother is giving me white rice which is boiled 3-4 times and the water is thrown away. You won’t believe me that I was 92 kg 3 months ago and I used to run fast 4-5 km every morning for 1- 1 and half hours and walk at evening and at night and burn nearly 500-600 cal per day reducing my weight to 74 in just 2 months. Therefore I think eating rice won’t increase weight if u manage to burn it everyday.

Your body must have gotten used to the exercises and walking you do and now adjusts to whatever little calories you are intakingf. this happens in a lot of cases where despite of all efforts you dont lose a bit. breaking this plateau requires a lot of patience …. here is what you can do …….. exercise wise – stop doing what you are already doing for a week … and then you surprise your body with a new activity .. for ex – you have been walking all these days , so now change your activity to swimming / zumba dancing / skatting / gyming / playing badminton or lawn tennis … whatever suits you best. tai chi and kick boxing and pillates work excellently in such cases., i know its hard to find time and availabilty of such sports around you .. but if you want to get there .. you need to find harder !!

Food wise – surprise your body yet agin by co nsuming food stuffs that you never did .. it changes your metabolic graph and hence makes you lose weight …. ex – if you have been eating wheat and rice as staples so far … dont eat them for an entire week , and consume other cereals like bajra , jowar , or ragi …. this funda has worked superbly with my clients .. you can try and see if it suits you too ..

      Hi Ben,

if you cant workout on all 7 days of the week , try to make it work on the days you have offs . atleat 3 times a week. this will help you loads in shedding down the first few kgs . on the days when you are on duty , and cannot devote time for exercises. please try to walk for only 10 – 15 mins post breakfast , lunch and dinner. it cann be a small stroll in the hospital itself . if you do not have 15 mins , try to climb 5 floors up and down. this too is very very helpful in weight loss. so over all you will be burning some good cals and increasing the BMR and possibilities of weight loss.

while doing all this , you should also try to manage your diet . avoid all white and simple carbs . dont eat junc. carry healthy nutritious meal from home , or if you eat at hospital cafeterias , im sure you mite be getting a lot of healthy food choices as well.

drink a lot of green tea. you can carry a flask from home if ready green tea is unavailable there. just put 1 sachet of green tea in the flask and consume this through the day at regular intervals. all these things together will help you in losing some good weight.

    Hi Payal,
Thanks for the very informative posts, very useful. I have 2 questions, the first on BMI. Is the BMI really a useful guide as it does not seem to take into account if a person is heavy from fat or muscle, ie whether he/she is athletic or flabby build. Secondly, do you have a specific way to help control the waist line. I struggle hard to keep it under 100 cm and it keeps bloating often to 110. I am a male, 64 and a BMI of 29

      Hi Bala,

Absolutely not . BMI is for an average adult. it does not take the muscle / lean mass / fat % in to account . and for any body into sports , or with an atheletic background or for a weight lifter / body builders, body composition test gives better reliable results. BMI just gives a general idea of the person’s health status. the best way to keep fit and your body toned is to be involved in workouts .

if the weight gain is recent , try to introspect what you did wrong . were you eating more ? were you exercising less ? were you sleeping less ? do you have any stress ? do you have any family history of thyroidism ? this will help you know the reason behind sudden weight gain . once you know what is wrong where , you can help yourself better

    Hello ma’am.
I am an 18yr old medico from hyderabad. I weigh around 62 kgs. 10kg more than my healthy weight. My parents won’t allow me to replace rice with any other things in a meal. Eating 2 chapattis in the morning and white rice afternoon n evening is a must, no matter what else i eat. They believe in quantity of food. Typical indian parents!
As for my college routine, i don’t use lift and climb around 150-200 steps everyday along with walking for minimum 20 minutes everyday. I have also cut down on soda drinks after reading your article (which i used to drink as a replacement for water..on a daily basis)
I have lost 2 kgs of weight doing only these 3 things for a month…but is there a way, i can speed up?
Most importantly i wish to get in shape. Lose weight around my pelvic region…Belly, hips and thighs. Please reply

      Hi ,

I agree with your parents actually . quality of food is very important at the age you are in . if you diet at this age , you will weaken your body store and may face deficiencies later. so its best to keep the diet as it is . exercise is waht you really need , increase the 20 mins alk to 45 mins and you will speed up the weight loss process and start losing weight from the desired areas . besides eat a lot of salads and drink lot of water and green tea.

      Hello Mr Venkatesh,

Thank you for reading at Dietburrp. you should increrase your walking timings. minimum of 45 – 60 mins of walking is required. and also change your walking time. for ex- if you regularly walk in the mornings, your body is now used to the routine and hence no weight loss is occuring. change this walk timings to evening and you would notice weight loss. Dont worry weight loss would happen if you treat the reason behind weight gain. check our diabetic plan for weight loss .. and south indian plan for weight loss. follow the diet chart and im sure you would benefit from them. here are the links ..
