There comes a time in the life of every overweight person, when they are ready to follow any hardship to lose some quick kgs. GM diet is the rescuer. Indian Vegetarian Diet Plan to Lose Weight ( 7 days GM Diet )

Benefits of GM diet:

This GM diet was assembled by General motor company for its employees. This is why it is named as General motor diet or GM diet. This 7 days Diet plan has many benefits because of the way it is designed.

  • Quick weight loss: The biggest benefit of the GM diet is that it helps in quick weight loss. Most people drop around 3-6 kgs weight in just 1 week. Miraculous isn’t it?
  • Detoxification: Gm diet helps in Flushing off the toxins from your system. It mostly involves eating loads and loads of fruits and vegetables every day. This helps in providing micronutrients to the body.
  • Rest to the gut: The food items prescribed in this diet do not crowd the gut, and hence provide rest to your entire digestive system. This also helps in better elimination of wastes and toxins.
  • 7 day period is so small that you would remain determined and motivated to carry on with the plan.

Do’s GM diet:

  • Increased Water intake

While on a GM diet, you need to ensure that you consume at least 10 glasses of water every day. Gm diet has a strict diet regime. It may often lead to headaches, malaise, profound sweating, and weakness. These side effects can increase in cases of dehydration. Hence maintaining proper hydration will keep you off these side effects. It also helps in better cleansing of the body system.

  • Eat a variety of vegetables and fruits

The GM diet basically comprises of vegetable as well as fruits intake. If you are keen on following it for the week, make sure you buy a huge variety of fruits and vegetables beforehand. Including different varieties of fruits and vegetables will ensure the availability of all micronutrients to your body. This will help you sustain the monotony and keep the side effects away.

  • Exercise

Although this diet plan is good for quick weight loss, it is preferable to follow a 45 minutes exercise/walking routine for 7 days. This will ensure that your muscles are toned as well as you lose weight from the right areas. Learn more about burning fat for weight loss.

Don’ts of GM diet:

Avoid Alcohol – Alcohol provides a hell lot of calories, leave apart the toxins it inserts in your system. Gm diet is a very low-calorie diet plan. If you intake Alcohol while following this diet, it may lead to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) episodes. It can cause blackouts, drowsiness, and fainting.

The vegetarian GM Diet plan:

All said and done, it’s time now to take a look at the actual Indian vegetarian GM diet plan.

Day 1:

On the first day of this plan, you are required to eat only fruits. The quantity of intake is not defined, and hence you can eat till you feel full.

 My Take:

To make this healthier, I would suggest you to –

  • Include a huge variety of fruits. Involve all colors of fruit to get maximum benefits of the antioxidants. Red, yellow and green eat them all.
  • Wherever possible eat fruits with the peel, this will help in increasing your fiber intake. Like in case of apple and pear. This fiber will help you keep away from hunger pangs and will make you feel full.
  • Citrus fruits like pineapple, orange, lemon, sweet lime, strawberries will provide you with a lot of Vitamin C. This will help you in flushing off the wastes and keep a good shine on your face and hair.
  • Eat all melon fruits – Melon fruits are high in water content. They will lead to increased urination, helping you flush the toxins and also water weight. This is specifically helpful in cases of water retention.

Day 2:

This is your vegetable day. This function is similar to fruits. The variety ensures that most micronutrients are provided to the body. You can boil them, steam them, have it raw or make a soup out of it. You can have 1 cup of baked or boiled potato too.

My Take

  • Have the boiled/baked potato for breakfast. This will ensure a good and energetic start to your day. If you don’t like only potatoes, you can try this apple and potato salad.
  • Use spice to make your boiled/steamed vegetables taste good. No point eating them bland and then losing your motivation to move ahead.
  • Squeezing lemon on your veggies will not only add taste but also provide Vitamin C to assure that glowing face.
  • If you are fond of salads, here is a good recipe.
  • Add some green tea to your day to ensure detoxification. (without sugar)

Day 3:

The third day is a blend of the first 2 days. On this day you can have all the veggies and fruits you ate on the previous days. You need to avoid potatoes and bananas on this day.

My Take:

Yes, monotony is boring. My advice is if you really want to enjoy this week while you lose weight, try your hands at a variety of recipes instead of sticking to alone fruit or steamed veggie. Yes, there are a lot of tasty possibilities with this combination.

Day 4:

This is a high potassium and high carbs day. This will help in replenishing your energy stores. You are allowed to eat up to 8 bananas and 4 glasses of milk on this day.  you can spend the rest of the time eating fruits and vegetables or even vegetable soup (no cream).

My Take:

The Smoothie day, as I call it is a blessing in disguise, after the 3 days of munching on veggies and fruits, your taste buds would love the change. Just blend a smoothie out of 2 bananas and a glass of milk.

  • In a small personal experiment, I changed the bananas to mangoes (total 4 .no) and I saw the same effect. Mangoes are equally high in potassium as well as in carbs. Plus the combination is irresistible for me. You can try it too. This made me recharge my motivation to finish up the pending days.
  • Recipe for simple, low-calorie vegetable soup. (Fast to cook too).

Day 5:

This is protein day. You need to include paneer, curd, soy milk, soya chunks along with 6 tomatoes. The original GM diet needs you to eat 10 oz of beef, which provides around 60 – 70 gms of protein. To meet this, you need to eat either 500 Gms of paneer or you can also have 250 Gms of paneer + 20 gms of soya chunks + 150 ml curd.

If you have any confusion regarding what food to choose for this day, check the protein table under day 5 of our Indian Non-Vegetarian GM Diet Plan for Weight Loss.

My Take:

I observed a good drop in weight on this day.

  • I don’t like eating plain paneer, I mean it is bland and I doubt if anyone really could eat it plain. So I suggest you grate some carrots and lots of chopped Bell pepper (very good for weight loss), onion and tomatoes. Make paneer bhurji (something like scrambled egg) out of it in 1 tsp olive oil. I used a lot of spices like cardamom, cinnamon, cloves for taste.
  • If you like soups, you can make a vegetable soup as well as add small paneer cubes to it along with some chopped veggies on top.
  • If you are an eggitarian, you could replace paneer with egg whites.
  • Some websites suggest eating Brown rice on this day. I found it irrelevant.  Brown rice is not protein for sure.
  • 6 tomatoes can be easily used in diets or as a juice along with other veggies.

Day 6:

This day is more or less like your day 5. You can incorporate similar foodstuff in an increased quantity if needed.

Indian Vegetarian version of GM Diet Plan 7 days GM Diet

Image :Copyright: yuliya29 / 123RF Stock Photo

Day 7:

On the last day, you can continue to eat the vegetables as well as fruits of your choice (avoid the high carbs ones) along with a cup of brown rice at lunch.

If you have done it all, at the end of the week you would find yourself weighing lighter than before.  I observed that every time I fought hunger while following the plan, I was full of demotivation and moreover, I wanted to give up instantly. But I tried to control that emotion by telling myself that the GM diet is about restricting food groups on particular days and not about remaining hungry. So I went on to eat what was allowed until I felt my stomach was full. This at least helped me in finishing what I started.

Note – I may have modified the GM diet plan a bit here and there in the best nutritional interest of the readers.

During 6th day. How many egg whites we need to have in replacement of paneer. Since 500gm paneer quantity is much much high. Not sure how many egg whites will give that much proteins equivalent to 500gms of paneer.

    Hi,
I want to start GM diet soon, I am 40 year mail, weight 84KG, height 5’8″ and going to Gym for normal workout (cardio and weights). I am working with a company and working hours is 8am to 7.30pm including travel time. I can have green tea twice in a day in office and I am planning to do as given below, please correct me if I am thinking to do anything wrong:

Day 1: All fruits which may be like Apple, orange, pinapple, Pear, Papaya, Pomegranate, water melon etc. Is chiku also allowed?
Day 2: Vegs – Cucumber, carrot, radish, Onion with chaat masala as salad. Gobhi sabji. can I have Brocolli etc on this day?. in case feeling hungry then Can I add some fruits too, like apple, orange?
Day 3 – Mix of day 1 and 2 so not an issue. can I have same combination on Day 2?
Day 4 – Not an issue with 8-10 Banana and i liter milk, can have Banana shake infact
Day 5 – This is protein day, right? So panned, curd and Rajma allowed in this day? curd can be of normal skimmed milk or only soya milk? can we have plain basmati rice or only brown rice is allowed. Tomato salad is ok with chaat masala, not an issue
Day 6 – plain basmati white rice and vegetable ok, can I have dal with rice or khichdi cooked with some vegetable. Cheese is ok
Day 7 – This is combination of rice, vegs and fruits. so can I have dal rice OR Khichdi as mentioend above in Day 6

Please advise, it can really help me to reduce some weight
Do we need to follow this diet again later or can have normal diet (sabji, roti, fruits, milk etc) from Day 8

Any DO and DONTS from you side please?

    Best Regards

      Hi Shyam ,

Please find your answers below .

Day 1: All fruits – which fruit to be avoided. Can I take milk, tea during the day. And if hungry then can I have a bowl of dal etc

      – avoid starchy fruits like banana, chikku, custard apple, grapes .
      – you can take 1 cup ilk tea once or twice a day.
      – nope , on day 1 , no dals allowed , if hungry have melon fruits like cantaloupe , water melons , or drink fruit juice , coconut water , but no dal on this day. the first day is the toughest , but you you can survive :)

Day 2: All vegs – What to be avoided here. Can I have Dal again here. Brocoli etc allowed? Potato is allowed I guess

      – just have potato in the mentioned amount. avoid starchy veggies like arbi , sweet potato.
-Dal not allowed , but you can have vegetable based soup. you can check the mix veg soup recipe on dietburrp. just avoid the ghee /butter in it.
      – yes brocolli allowed , you can have stirred veggies with a little rock salt an pepper, this curbs hunger and fills u up.
      – yes only 1 cup , which comes to 2 medium sized potato anytime during the day.

Day 3: Mix of day 1 and day 2, so your answer for above two points can help me

      – yes , no potato though. soups allowed. make sure liquid intake is high.

Day 4: Banan and Milk – Ok, no issues

      – cool

Day 5: Brown rice / curd and tomatoes: can I have white rice (basmati) with dal here. How it will be, like one meal of rice and another meal of curd and then Tomato or all meals of this day can be combination of these three. Paneer, dryfruits like almond etc allowed?

      – sorry , no rice on this day in my version of GM diet. This is protein day. you need to eat either 500 Gms of paneer or you can also have 250 Gms of paneer + 20 gms of soya chunks + 150 ml curd.

have 6 raw tomatoes in juice or sliced or chopped salad form . then have egg whites upto 6 . dals , paneer bhurji , or paneer tikka (home made ), palak paneer veg (home made again)

Day 6: Brown rice / cure / Vegs: again query is same. Can we have white rice with dal etc. Can I have broccoli etc here
      – same again , like day 5 , day 6 is protein day , no rice allowed in my version of GM. menu is same as day 5 , but in more quantity.

Day 7: Mix of all 6 days – what to be avoided

      – in My version , you follow all fruits , and veggies that were allowed on day 1 and 2 , soups are allowed too. have brown rice with veggies and kadhi on day 7 for lunch .

Also please let me know that is this one week exercise is for once or need to follow every month / quarter
      – you can follow the diet once a month to shed off a few kgs. once you finish the routine , you need to closely watch what you eat or you would gain all the lost weight . you can check the 1200 calorie weight loss diet plan on our website, they will help in maintaining the lost weight.

Please help with major DO and DONTS in this diet plan. If still feel hungry then what to take and chaat masala, spices etc ok with fruits and vegetable? Normally I have milk before sleep, is this allowed

      – dos and donts are not much please read this article carefully , everything is mentioned here clearly –

      https://www.dietburrp.com/indian-vegetarian-diet-plan-lose-weight-7-days-gm-diet/

-spices are all ok , avoid the regular salt , you can use rock salt , or sendha salt , or buy pottasium salt (lona salt) available at pharmacy. ‘

      – you can have 1 cup milk every night at bed time . day 5 onwards you can have 1 glass milk every night at bed time .

do let me know if you have any other doubts :) All the best

      Hi,

1] yes you can but have it in a liberal amount . try to include melon as well. 4

2] that will be too less, you will be left tired , and hungry full day . will not be able to accomplish work too.

3] sorry , milk / curd is much needed with banana, upto 8 .

4] yes, if cooking is not an option , then you can .

5] in that case go for a chapati and dal instead .1

i really feel that you wont be able to complete the plan if you take it ahead the way you mentioned . its too crash , and i cannot recommend you to follow such a low 400 -500 cal diet for an entire week .

going so low on calories will not even help in weight loss to be true.

          Hi Kashyap,

1] yes you can have , but dont add any sugar.

2] yes , but have brown rice . and have more gravy , and less rajma beans.

3] sorry , i do not encourage people in losing more than 4 kgs a month as that is not right for the body and not healthy way of losing weight . even if you lose 10 kgs in a month , that weight loss is temporary and no matter what , you will gain it right back in the next month. please dont play with your body , it better to go slow and steady and choose a healthy route to reach ypour goal.

    1. Ist day evening was with a gastric tummy for more than 2 hrs. What could be wrong ?
    2. 2nd day so far is good but it is impossible for me to eat raw veggies. My wife came to my rescue & served a platter full of Saute Veggies with little butter & rock salt. I really relished it.Can I have this one in evening & tmrw also ?
    3. Today my mouth is very dry & feeling dehydrated despite drinking water regularly. What cud b wrong ?

Please advice the necessary I am really wiling to complete the plan,

      Hi Vishi ,

Thanks for all the appreciation . I am glad our comments and replies have motivated you to start thinking healthy.

      1. long gap in fruit intake or less intake can be the reason. too much acidic fruit intake can cause it too.
      2. yes you can , use olive oil . rice bran oil instead of butter.
      3. low sugar levels . please eat more frequently and have a glass of fruit juice and 3-4 coconut water .

        Pls help on these:-

        (1) Can I have sugar free green/lemon tea 2-3 times a day during the remaining days for my salvation?

(2)Also prescribe what is to be consumed on 8th day & henceforth pls ??????

            Hi Payal,

Today on this 7th auspicious morning of your Indianized GM Diet Plan, I am glad to observe a net loss of 3.0 KG, that too after several dietary deviations (oops dining moments) & with negligible physical work outs !

Though contended, I wish I could shed off a few more kilos !

Anyways, I look ahead to carry out the same every month & really-really-try to pursue your 1200 Cals/day diet plan (though it appears to be a tough one too ).

Nevertheless, I once again thank you for explicitly addressing to all the queries of aspirants like me thereby modifying this strict plan with lot of alternatives & varieties into a joyful dieting experience !

Feeling light & thanking heavy, I owe you a lot !

            God bless you.

      Hi Poornima,

after only 1 month of your surgery , it is not advisable to follow such a strict diet routine . you should wait for another month , so that your body heals and the nutrient stores are replenished. once you get on track , you can follow the routine once every month .

      Hi Sharupa,

2 kgs in 4 day is very good loss, why that sad face ? be happy with the loss. i will really not advice you to follow the diet back to back . i understand you may be in a hurry to reach your goal , but this will leave your body nutritionally drained and you will not b able to continue with your workout with the same gist . and not healthy to conceive after your body has used up all nutrient reservoirs. take it slow and lose weight healthy way . because weight loss is not the ultimate goal , rather is it conceiving .

P.S: I am low on Haemoglobin. I have Hypo Thyrodism. Is it advised that I even do this Plan?

I am doing this diet for the second time now after a gap of one month.at first reduced 3.5 Kg, now at present I am on the 3rd day, so my question was can dates or jackfruit be eaten as fruits? if yes how much can be consumed also I am planning to eat only sprouts and soya chunks with lemon dressing on day 4 and 5, so what would be the correct amount that I need to consume if I am eating only these 2 items along with a bowl of curd? thank you

      Hi ,

Dates and jackfruit – nope . jackfruit is still fine , but little .

sprouts – 500 gms . this much sprout can give you gas. so please take care . use boiled / pressure cooked sprouts instead of raw at all times. this will help in digestion. 1 glass curd , and 100 gms soya chunk .

      Hi Manavendra,

Interesting question. Basically both these diets are crash diets , as they do not provide a whole some meal . i have observed from my experience that atkins diet works well for those who are exercising intensively . such people lose very good weight with atkins. but it doesnt work much for those who are not physically very active . so a person who is physically very active and follows atins diet for a week , will lose good weight . after the week if he changes his diet pattern but continues with physical exercises , the weight will either be maintained or will be further lost , depending on the choice of diet followed after atkins .

where as In GM diet , its absolutely low calorie diet . and intensive workouts are not suggested while following this diet. so nomally a person would lose weight on GM , but after that week , if he returns to routine , with little or no physical activity , he will gain back all weight . but if he continues to follow a 1100 – 1200 calorie intake through diet he will maintain that weight and further lose weight if he starts with exercises .

so both the diets cant be compared , as the basic condition for both are different . so if you are an exercise type , follow atkins for best result, while if ypou are an average person with little or no exercise , atkins wont work wonders for you , but GM can …

      Hi Sanjay ,

Yes it is ffine . actually protein provide satiety. you will feel full sooner than expected , so automatically the quntity of intake is controlled by your mind. its ok to cross the mentioned protein intake in quantity, but make sure you drink a lot of water along with it. this will help in increasing urination and eliminating all the waste this extra protein would create in the body .

    Hi Payal,

Thanks for this wonderful site which clarifies so much about the GM diet and is customized for the Indian diet.

I have gone through all the queries and have got most of my answers to some of the queries that I had in mind.

I am on Day 6 of the GM diet and have the following queries.

    1. The diet says unlimited fruits and veggies but no mention on the quantity of protien on Day 5 & Day 6.
    2. Can we eat dry fruits like raisins, almonds, walnuts, pistachios during this diet?
    3. If we cook the veggies in very little oil and rock salt can it be eaten on Day 2, 3, 4, 5,6 & 7?
    4. I have to travel locally sometimes and cannot consume fruit while commuting, so is there a substitute for this?

    Looking forward to your advice.

    Thank you,

    Catherine

for protein day. i have mentioned clearly in the article – : You need to include paneer , curd , soy milk, soya chunks along with 6 tomatoes. The original GM diet needs you to eat 10 oz of beef, which provides around 60 – 70 gms of protein. To meet this, you need to eat either 500 Gms of paneer or you can also have 250 Gms of paneer + 20 gms of soya chunks + 150 ml curd.

    Hi Payal,

On Day 2 and Day 3 I had Tomato Soup, along with steamed veggies. I hope that won’t be a problem, apart from that I have strictly followed the diet.

    Thanks.

    Dear Payal,

I am on the 4th day of diet and I have noticed a weight loss of 1.6kg. I am happy and hope will remain on the same. I have few questions,
    1. I had 2-3 spoons of fruit salad with sugar syrup by mistake on day 3. Will it cause any difference?
    2. Can I have chickoo on all the days with fruits.
    3. Can I have curds on all days of diet?
    4. Can I use chicken on protein day? If yes, what is the quantity?
    5. What food to take on day 7. I am planning 1 bowl of oats and rest the day with fruits and vegetables. Is that ok?
    6. Can I have banana on day 5,6&7?

    Thanks
    Shalet

      Hi Monika ,

sorry cant relly predict on how much you can lose , but on an average , 1 -3 kgs of weight loss is common . day 1 only fruits , day 2 only veggies , details of which fruit to eat are mentioned in the article . cereals and oats only 7th day lunch .

This is not really allowed in gm diet , but i allow my clients and reader to take 1 glass skimmed milk at bedtime , with littlee or no sugar . this does not really affect weight loss much .

      2. definitely .
      3. oops . no spot reduction . it will help in over all weight loss. but some people notice spicific changes on belly sizes . they lose belly fat . so there is no assurity .

day 5 and 6 – This is the protein day. You need to include paneer , curd , soy milk, soya chunks along with 6 tomatoes. The original GM diet needs you to eat 10 oz of beef, which provides around 60 – 70 gms of protein. To meet this, you need to eat either 500 Gms of paneer or you can also have 250 Gms of paneer + 20 gms of soya chunks + 150 ml curd.

day 7 – mostly all fruits and veggies and receipes related to fruits and veggies and have brown rice for lunch .
