7 days GM diet plan is something everyone wants to follow for quick weight loss. GM Diet is very popular all over the world for the fact that it leads to very fast weight loss. There comes a time in the life of every overweight person, when they are ready to follow any hardship to lose some quick kgs. GM diet is the rescuer. The original diet is full of nonveg food items and stuff you would find hard to assemble. Hence, we have worked on an easy to follow Indian vegetarian version of 7 days GM diet. Benefits of GM diet:ย 

This GM diet was assembled by General motor company for its employees. This is why it is named as General motor diet or GM diet. This 7 days Diet plan has many benefits because of the way it is designed.

  • Quick weight loss:ย The biggest benefit of the GM diet is that it helps in quick weight loss. Most people drop around 3-6 kgs weight in just 1 week. Miraculous isn’t it?
  • Detoxification: Gm diet helps in Flushing off the toxins from your system. It mostly involves eating loads and loads of fruits and vegetables every day. This helps in providing micronutrients to the body.
  • Rest to the gut:ย The food items prescribed in this diet do not crowd the gut, and hence provide rest to your entire digestive system. This also helps in better elimination of wastes and toxins.
  • 7 day period is so small that you would remain determined and motivated to carry on with the plan.

Doโ€™s GM diet:

  • Increased Water intake

While on a GM diet, you need to ensure that you consume at least 10 glasses of water every day. Gm diet has a strict diet regime. It may often lead to headaches, malaise, profound sweating, and weakness. These side effects can increase in cases of dehydration. Hence maintaining proper hydration will keep you off these side effects. It also helps in better cleansing of the body system.

  • Eat a variety of vegetables and fruits

The GM diet basically comprises of vegetable as well as fruits intake. If you are keen on following it for the week, make sure you buy a huge variety of fruits and vegetables beforehand. Including different varieties of fruits and vegetables will ensure the availability of all micronutrients to your body. This will help you sustain the monotony and keep the side effects away.

  • Exercise

Although this diet plan is good for quick weight loss, it is preferable to follow a 45 minutes exercise/walking routine for 7 days. This will ensure that your muscles are toned as well as you lose weight from the right areas. Learn more about burning fat for weight loss.

Donโ€™ts of GM diet:

Avoid Alcohol – Alcohol provides a hell lot of calories, leave apart the toxins it inserts in your system. Gm diet is a very low-calorie diet plan. If you intake Alcohol while following this diet, it may lead to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) episodes. It can cause blackouts, drowsiness, and fainting.

All said and done, itโ€™s time now to take a look at the actual Indian vegetarian GM diet plan.

Day 1:

On the first day of this plan, you are required to eat only fruits. The quantity of intake is not defined, and hence you can eat till you feel full.

ย My Take:

To make this healthier, I would suggest you to –

  • Include a huge variety of fruits. Involve all colors of fruit to get maximum benefits of the antioxidants. Red, yellow andย green eat them all.
  • Wherever possible eat fruits with the peel, this will help in increasing your fiber intake. Like in case of apple and pear. This fiber will help you keep away from hunger pangs and will make you feel full.
  • Citrus fruits like pineapple, orange, lemon, sweet lime, strawberries will provide you with a lot of Vitamin C. This will help you in flushing off the wastes and keep a good shineย on your face and hair.
  • Eat all melon fruits – Melon fruits are high in water content. They will lead to increased urination, helping you flush the toxins and also water weight. This is specifically helpful in cases of water retention.

Day 2:

This is your vegetable day. This function is similar to fruits. The variety ensures that most micronutrients are provided to the body. You can boil them, steam them, have it raw or make a soup out of it. You can have 1 cup of baked or boiled potato too.

My Take

  • Have the boiled/baked potato for breakfast. This will ensure a good and energetic start to your day. If you donโ€™t like only potatoes, you can try this apple and potato salad.
  • Use spice to make your boiled/steamed vegetables taste good. No point eating them bland and then losing your motivation to move ahead.
  • Squeezing lemon on your veggies will not only add taste but also provide Vitamin C to assure that glowing face.
  • If you are fond of salads, here is a good recipe.
  • Add some green tea to your day to ensure detoxification. (without sugar)

Day 3:

The third day is a blend of the first 2 days. On this day you can have all the veggies and fruits you ate on the previous days. You need to avoid potatoes and bananas on this day.

My Take:

Yes, monotony is boring. My advice is if you really want to enjoy this week while you lose weight, try your hands at a variety of recipes instead of sticking to alone fruit or steamed veggie. Yes, there are a lot of tasty possibilities with this combination.

Day 4:

This is a high potassium and high carbs day. This will help in replenishing your energy stores. You are allowed to eat up to 8 bananas and 4 glasses of milk on this day.ย  you can spend the rest of the time eating fruits and vegetables or even vegetable soup (no cream).

My Take:

The Smoothie day, as I call it is a blessing in disguise, after the 3 days of munching on veggies and fruits, your taste buds would love the change. Just blend a smoothie out of 2 bananas and a glass of milk.

  • In a small personal experiment, I changed the bananas to mangoes (total 4 .no) and I saw the same effect. Mangoes are equally high in potassium as well as in carbs. Plus the combination is irresistible for me. You can try it too. This made me recharge my motivation to finish up the pending days.
  • Recipe for simple, low-calorie vegetable soup. (Fast to cook too).

Day 5:

This is protein day. You need to include paneer, curd, soy milk, soya chunks along with 6 tomatoes. The original GM diet needs you to eat 10 oz of beef, which provides around 60 – 70 gms of protein. To meet this, you need to eat either 500 Gms of paneer or you can also have 250 Gms of paneer + 20 gms of soya chunks + 150 ml curd.

My Take:

I observed a good drop in weight on this day.

  • I donโ€™t like eating plain paneer, I mean it is bland and I doubt if anyone really could eat it plain. So I suggest you grate some carrots and lots of chopped Bell pepper (very good for weight loss), onion and tomatoes. Make paneer bhurji (something like scrambled egg) out of it in 1 tsp olive oil. I used a lot of spices like cardamom, cinnamon, cloves for taste.
  • If you like soups, you can make a vegetable soup as well as add small paneer cubes to it along with some chopped veggies on top.
  • If you are an eggitarian, you could replace paneer with egg whites.
  • Some websites suggest eating Brown rice on this day. I found it irrelevant.ย  Brown rice is not protein for sure.
  • 6 tomatoes can be easilyย used in diets or as aย juice along with other veggies.

Day 6:

This day is more or less like your day 5. You can incorporate similar foodstuff in an increased quantity if needed.

Day 7:

On the last day, you can continue to eat the vegetables as well as fruits of your choice (avoid the high carbs ones) along with a cup of brown rice at lunch.

If you have done it all, at the end of the week you would find yourself weighing lighter than before.ย  I observed that every time I fought hunger while following the plan, I was full of demotivation and moreover, I wanted to give up instantly. But I tried to control that emotion by telling myself that the GM diet is about restricting food groups on particular days and not about remaining hungry. So I went on to eat what was allowed until I felt my stomach was full. This at least helped me in finishing what I started.

Note – I may have modified the GM diet plan a bit here and there in the best nutritional interest of the readers.

      please dont follow this diet while you are feeding your baby . your milk supply will drastically go down and your poor baby wil have to suffer. you can now shift from yoga to higher intensity workouts , like power yoga , jogging and brisk walking,.

    I can restrain my strength training but is it ok to have cardio 30 mins.

    Hi mam, I am atchaya and I am at the age of 21. My weight is 63 and I am 5.3. My BMI is 24 and I want to reduce my weight as I think I will get diabetes because of heredity.     I have following questions
    I am 5’7 with 64 kg weight.
    I m regular in gym. I do cardio for 30 mins and strength training for 45 mins , can i still follow this diet with gym regularly?
    I take whey proteins 2 times a day is it ok in this diet?
    Is milk on all the days of diet plan or only on 4th day?

      Hi Kartika ,
      intensive workouts during GM diet are not good to do , you will feel weak and tired and you might suffer a blackout in the middle of the session too. so please refrain from folling the plan . also what is your health goal ? weight wise you are ok as per your height .

      you can follow this plan only once a month . it is a crash diet and not advisable to follow for a long period of time.

    I am on Day 6 of the diet. Lost 6 lbs but nothing on Day 5 as you noted. I am planning on a second one right after. My questions are
    (a) What is the number of minimum days you need to wait before starting a second GM Diet week?
    (b) What is the way to connect with you to discuss personal dietary coaching?
    (c) Is coffee without cream allowed?
    (d) I notice you have Kerala/Hyderabad diet prescriptions. Is there a Punjabi one too (this one would become most popular when you do create one)??

      a] At the end of the day , GM diet is a crash diet , and hence it is not advisable to follow it for a long period of time . so you can follow it once every month .

      c] in the traditional GM diet it is not allowed , but in my version i allow a cup of coffee or tea to the addicts so that they can spend the res of the day with proper zist

    Hi Payal I started your meal plan I am doing 20 minute walk and running and also 20 minutes exercise and I am giving breastfeeding to my baby also can I drink 2 cup of milk in whole day

      breastfeeding ? well this diet is not supposed to be follwed while breast feeding as this will get the milk supply low and slowly diminish . if your baby is less than 6 months please stop following the diet plan . and if the baby is more than an year old and is mostly om top feed then it is fine . traditionally milk is not allowed on all day , but in special cases like your you can take

    Hi. I am 32 years old , 5.2 and 56 kgs. I was planning to start GM diet from tomorrow onwards but after reading all the comments I realized its not for me as I am overweight only by few kgs. I really need to loose belly fat as after C- section ( 1 year ago) lots of fat has accumulated on my belly. Is it possible to loose belly fat just with dieting and not much rigorous workout? Should I start with 1200 calories plan? Or should I give GM plan a try? Please advise. I’m confused. Thanks

      you should follow a 1200 calorie diet plan with 45 mins of walking / workout that suits you .

    Hi Payal,
    I liked your articles alot. have started walking for 45 minutes every evening. Mornings I do yoga for 40 minutes.
    I have started following your GM diet version. I am on day 3. I am feeling fatigued and tired. have lost 1kg in past 2 days. I did some cheats though ( have 2 almonds every morning and 1 cup of tea on 1st day alone)
    Please guide me and tips that I can feel energetic.

      Hi Aditi ,

      thanks for appreciating my work . you have to make sure that you are eating enough amount of prescribed food for that particular day . you may also be gettingtired because you are working out 2 times a day , where in while following GM diet we ask clients to be only moderately active . make sure you drink enough water and remain hydrated . by the way , you are already done with the hardest days of GM diet , and journey from here on is not that difficult so dont worry , you would feel ok soon .

      Hi Pavan ,

      the regular white salt is not permitted while following GM diet. But you can use rock salt , or any other pottasium salt on your food .

    I am 5.10”inch tall with 85kgs.
    Is it good to start with GM diet or have just green tea initially for 2 days and then start GM diet?
    Is it harmful to stay only by taking green tea(taking as many times at wish)?

      Hi Santhosh , do you mean only and only green tea entire day and no food at all ? please dont do this , green tea raises your BMR and you will feel hungry as hell , and if you go without food , your body will lose lean body mass and you can even faint. please dont try anything that will affect your health adversly. if you mean taking green tea along with food intake , yes you can have 4-5 cups of weak green tea everyday .

    I am 4’9 and weight is 132 lbs, about 20 lbs overweight
    I would like to be my ideal weight by August…. Is it possible ?
    I previously have tried Gm diet but no success but this time I will be more strict with it
    My question is how can we keep it down once any loss?
    And can I have coffee with milk only every morning without compromising loss?
    Pls advise

      losing 3-4 kgs in amonth is possible and an healthy goa to achieve so aim for that. yes you can try GM , but if this diet hanst suit you in the past , there is no assurance that it will suit you this time , but you can try . after this week get over , you can follow any of our 1200 calorie diet plan to be able to keep it down. yes you can have 1 regular cup coffee every day in my version of GM diet

    Myself Sajeesh. 34 years old. I’m very much heavy now, and it is 89kg. My height is 173cm. I would like to reduce my belly fat asap. As I’m doing some workouts in fitness club.     A little about myself – my name is Prerna. Height : 5’1″ ; weight before wedding : 50 kg ; after 6 months : 55 kg. Age : 27. I eat healthy food and not more than 1200 calories per day and exercise as well. I tried the GM diet but lost only 1 kg. I want to get back to my weight to 50-52 kg. Have tried everything but just doesn’t work. Please help.

      Your body must have gotten used to the exercises and walking you do and now adjusts to whatever little calories you are intakingf. this happens in a lot of cases where despite of all efforts you dont lose a bit. breaking this plateau requires a lot of patience โ€ฆ. here is what you can do โ€ฆโ€ฆ.. exercise wise โ€“ stop doing what you are already doing for a week โ€ฆ and then you surprise your body with a new activity .. for ex โ€“ you have been walking all these days , so now change your activity to swimming / zumba dancing / skatting / gyming / playing badminton or lawn tennis โ€ฆ whatever suits you best. tai chi and kick boxing and pillates work excellently in such cases., i know its hard to find time and availabilty of such sports around you .. but if you want to get there .. you need to find harder !!

      Food wise โ€“ surprise your body yet agin by co nsuming food stuffs that you never did .. it changes your metabolic graph and hence makes you lose weight โ€ฆ. ex โ€“ if you have been eating wheat and rice as staples so far โ€ฆ dont eat them for an entire week , and consume other cereals like bajra , jowar , or ragi โ€ฆ. this funda has worked superbly with my clients .. you can try and see if it suits you too ..

    This is Bindi. I m 24 year old female with height 5 feet and weight 57 kgs. My BMR score comes around 1243. I have finished my first cycle of GM diet yesterday and have reduced 3.5 kgs approx in a week. I want know that from when i can start my next cycle of GM diet as I want to reduce few more kgs in 1 month. I want to let u know that i work 10-11 hrs a day in a private organisation and live a sedentary lifestyle.

    I had some questions regarding this.
    In all the day’s whether fruits or veggie can we use little bit of black salt or chat masala ?
    I am feeding my 1 yr old daughter so is it advisable to do GM diet ?
    Can we have cooked regular sabzi in veggie day with spices ?

      1] yes black salt or sendha namak is ok to have . avoid chat masala or use in very less amount.
      2] if you are feeding her more than 4-5 times then this diet is better avoided , even if you plan to go ahead , let me warn you .. the milk supply will go less.

      you can follow this plan . just make a point to drink a lot of water / fluids each day. Also to avoid gastric issues during this diet , make sure you keep eating a little something of the allowed food every 1.5 hours. long gap between meals will give you headaches as well as acidity

      Normally we advise to first do weight loss and then try to conceive , because while conceiving you need to exercise in limitation and eat healthy but regular calorie food . this is not an ideal diet to follow at the tim of conceiving. please dont follow it

    Hello Ma’am,

    My Age is 29 and I’m having 107 Kg weight. Normally i go to gym 2 times a day and i’m following a diet which includes;
    1. 2lemons added in the luke water
    1. 400 ml tonned milk with 100 onygm kellogg’s muesli in the morning.
    2. Arhahr Dal coocked in one table spoon of Olive oil (2 Bowls) in the afternoon.
    3. 400ml of milk in the afternoon
    4. 400ml of milk in the night.

    Will the above diet with the combination of exercise will help me in losing my weight?

      the above mentioned diet is too brisk and hyou will not be able to sustain. ikt is best to start following the 200 calorie diet plan on dietburrp for ealthy weight loss.

      GM diet will help you lose over all weight. so you can follow it , but to lose weight specifically from lower body , you need to work those muscles out . walking , running , jumping , tracking , squats will help you

      firstly it is my responsibility to convey to you that back to back GM diet is not recommended as it may lead to severe deficiencies in the body , moreover the weight loss effect is not same each time and you may lose the pace. please dont take such risks with your health

      secondly 4th day is anyways carb loading day , it will not harm much .

      Hi Meeta , GM diet is only for weight loss, it cannot treat pcod . pcod cannot be treated with food . it can be managed well with right eating and exercises and medicines.

    Hello Payal Mam, thanks for your blog. It corrected many of my doubts. I m on say 3of G.M. Diet. But haven’t seen much difference yet. Only 700gms weight have been reduced. I m not on any medications or not in or near my menses. On day one I have had variety of fruits. on day two, had mixed salad bowl from subway,but without any dressing on it. nd some brocoly,carrot and cucumber for lunch.What to do to see good result?
