Indian Vegetarian version of GM Diet Plan ( 7 days GM Diet )

Last Updated on December 5, 2025 | RD, Payal Banka (Registered Dietitian) 3,282 Comments

A 7-day GM diet plan is something everyone wants to follow for quick weight loss. The GM Diet is very popular all over the world for the fact that it leads to very fast weight loss. There comes a time in the life of every overweight person when they are ready to face any hardship to lose some quick kgs. GM diet is the rescuer. The original diet is full of non-vegetarian food items and stuff you would find hard to assemble. Hence, we have worked on an easy-to-follow Indian vegetarian version of the 7-day GM diet. Read on for more info.

Benefits of the GM diet:

This GM diet was assembled by General Motors for its employees. This is why it is named as General Motors diet or GM diet. This 7-day Diet plan has many benefits because of the way it is designed.

  • Quick weight loss: The biggest benefit of the GM diet is that it helps in quick weight loss. Most people drop around 3-6 kgs in just 1 week. Miraculous, isn’t it?
  • Detoxification: The GM diet helps in flushing off the toxins from your system. It mostly involves eating loads and loads of fruits and vegetables every day. This helps in providing micronutrients to the body.
  • Rest to the gut: The food items prescribed in this diet do not crowd the gut, and hence provide rest to your entire digestive system. This also helps in the better elimination of wastes and toxins.
  • 7-day period is so small that you would remain determined and motivated to carry on with the plan.

Do’s GM diet:

  • Increased Water intake

While on a GM diet, you need to ensure that you consume at least 10 glasses of water every day. The GM diet has a strict diet regimen. It may often lead to headaches, malaise, profound sweating, and weakness. These side effects can increase in cases of dehydration. Hence, maintaining proper hydration will keep you off these side effects. It also helps in better cleansing of the body system.

  • Eat a variety of vegetables and fruits

The GM diet basically comprises vegetables as well as fruits. If you are keen on following it for the week, make sure you buy a huge variety of fruits and vegetables beforehand. Including different varieties of fruits and vegetables will ensure the availability of all micronutrients to your body. This will help you sustain the monotony and keep the side effects away.

  • Exercise

Although this diet plan is good for quick weight loss, it is preferable to follow a 45-minute exercise/walking routine for 7 days. This will ensure that your muscles are toned, as well as you lose weight from the right areas. Learn more about burning fat for weight loss.

Don’ts of the GM diet:

Avoid Alcohol – Alcohol provides a hell lot of calories, let alone the toxins it introduces in your system. The GM diet is a very low-calorie diet plan. If you intake Alcohol while following this diet, it may lead to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) episodes. It can cause blackouts, drowsiness, and fainting.

If you are a Non – non-vegetarian, check this Indian Non-Vegetarian GM Diet Plan for Weight Loss for a detailed 7-day GM diet plan for weight loss.

The vegetarian GM Diet plan:

All said and done, it’s time now to take a look at the actual Indian vegetarian GM diet plan.

Day 1:

On the first day of this plan, you are required to eat only fruits. The quantity of intake is not defined, and hence, you can eat till you feel full.

 My Take:

To make this healthier, I would suggest you to –

  • Include a huge variety of fruits. Involve all colors of fruit to get the maximum benefits of the antioxidants. Red, yellow, and green eat them all.
  • Wherever possible, eat fruits with the peel; this will help in increasing your fiber intake. Like in the case of apple and pear. This fiber will help you keep away from hunger pangs and will make you feel full.
  • Citrus fruits like pineapple, orange, lemon, sweet lime, and strawberries will provide you with a lot of Vitamin C. This will help you in flushing off the wastes and keep a good shine on your face and hair.
  • Eat all melon fruits – Melon fruits are high in water content. They will lead to increased urination, helping you flush the toxins and also water weight. This is specifically helpful in cases of water retention.

Day 2:

This is your vegetable day. This function is similar to fruits. The variety ensures that most micronutrients are provided to the body. You can boil them, steam them, have it raw, or make a soup out of it. You can have 1 cup of baked or boiled potatoes too.

My Take

  • Have the boiled/baked potato for breakfast. This will ensure a good and energetic start to your day. If you don’t like only potatoes, you can try this apple and potato salad.
  • Use spices to make your boiled/steamed vegetables taste good. No point eating them bland and then losing your motivation to move ahead.
  • Squeezing lemon on your veggies will not only add taste but also provide Vitamin C to ensure that glowing face.
  • If you are fond of salads, here is a good recipe.
  • Add some green tea to your day to ensure detoxification. (without sugar)

Day 3:

The third day is a blend of the first 2 days. On this day, you can have all the veggies and fruits you ate on the previous days. You need to avoid potatoes and bananas on this day.

My Take:

Yes, monotony is boring. My advice is if you really want to enjoy this week while you lose weight, try your hand at a variety of recipes instead of sticking to only fruit or steamed veggies. Yes, there are a lot of tasty possibilities with this combination.

Day 4:

This is a high-potassium and high-carb day. This will help in replenishing your energy stores. You are allowed to eat up to 8 bananas and 4 glasses of milk on this day.  You can spend the rest of the time eating fruits and vegetables or even vegetable soup (no cream).

My Take:

The Smoothie day, as I call it, is a blessing in disguise. After the 3 days of munching on veggies and fruits, your taste buds would love the change. Just blend a smoothie out of 2 bananas and a glass of milk.

  • In a small personal experiment, I changed the bananas to mangoes (a total 4), and I saw the same effect. Mangoes are equally high in potassium as well as in carbs. Plus, the combination is irresistible for me. You can try it too. This made me recharge my motivation to finish up the pending days.
  • Recipe for simple, low-calorie vegetable soup. (Fast to cook too).

Day 5:

This is protein day. You need to include paneer, curd, soy milk, soya chunks, along with 6 tomatoes. The original GM diet requires you to eat 10 oz of beef, which provides around 60 – 70 g of protein. To meet this, you need to eat either 500 g of paneer, or you can also have 250 g of paneer + 20 g of soya chunks + 150 ml curd.

If you have any confusion regarding what food to choose for this day, check the protein table under day 5 of our Indian Non-Vegetarian GM Diet Plan for Weight Loss.

Image :Copyright: nikitos77 / 123RF Stock Photo

My Take:

I observed a good drop in weight on this day.

  • I don’t like eating plain paneer, I mean, it is bland, and I doubt if anyone really could eat it plain. So I suggest you grate some carrots and lots of chopped Bell pepper (very good for weight loss), onion, and tomatoes. Make paneer bhurji (something like scrambled egg) out of it in 1 tsp olive oil. I used a lot of spices like cardamom, cinnamon, and cloves for taste.
  • If you like soups, you can make a vegetable soup as well as add small paneer cubes to it, along with some chopped veggies on top.
  • If you are an eggitarian, you could replace paneer with egg whites.
  • Some websites suggest eating Brown rice on this day. I found it irrelevant.  Brown rice is not protein for sure.
  • 6 tomatoes can be easily used in diets or as a juice along with other veggies.

Day 6:

This day is more or less like your day 5. You can incorporate similar foodstuff in an increased quantity if needed.

Indian Vegetarian version of GM Diet Plan 7 days GM Diet

Image :Copyright: yuliya29 / 123RF Stock Photo

Day 7:

On the last day, you can continue to eat the vegetables as well as fruits of your choice (avoid the high-carb ones) along with a cup of brown rice at lunch.

If you have done it all, at the end of the week, you will find yourself weighing less than before.  I observed that every time I fought hunger while following the plan, I was full of demotivation, and moreover, I wanted to give up instantly. But I tried to control that emotion by telling myself that the GM diet is about restricting food groups on particular days and not about remaining hungry. So I went on to eat what was allowed until I felt my stomach was full. This at least helped me in finishing what I started.

Note – I may have modified the GM diet plan a bit here and there in the best nutritional interest of the readers.

      Hi ,

As mentioned earlier , we do not advocate any crash diets on a long run , if at all you want to follow this diet , you should do it only once in a months time , and do not repeat it back to back as it might affect your health. you can take 1 cup milk.

      Hi Roopa,

if your sinus is very active , then please consume fruit juices with cation. for hypothyroidism , just maintain a limited intake of cabbage and palak , avoid soya on the protein day. rest you can follow it as is.

      Hi Stuti,

yes i noticed that too . but i am confident about my plan , cant say about other site … 5 th day is a protein day , and rice definitely is not protein. hence i ve mentioned that in the article too .. may be you can ask help from the experts of the site where you read about eating rice on 5th day. if it is correct, they should have a clear explaination of why they mentioned rice on a protein day .

      Hi Reena,

Sorry , i do not advice any nursing mom to follow weight loss diets, leave apart GM diet. you should wait for your baby to start on top feeds and become less dependent or independent for his nutrition needs. meanwhile , have a healthy diet but keep walking and doing yoga .. this will help in weight loss.

      Hi Savvy ,

Yes its possible . but i would not advice you to go on GM diet forever. you need to choose a healthy diet and exercise pattern . you can follow GM diet once in a month to give a jerk to your weight loss. but dont follow it for the entire month. you can check out the various 1200 calories diet plan on our website. and choose according to your cuisine.

      Hi Shalini ,

If you do it the right way , you can also lose fat . those people who are not doing anything for weight loss, and suddenly start with GM diet, lose water weight. But if you are already working on weight loss, exercising and controlling your food intake or following any diet pattern, and you find that you are now stuck and your body demands a change, GM diet is a good change and then the weight you lose will boost your metabolism if you follow it in a way i have mentioned. the most common mistake people do while on GM diet is they starve themselves, or stop the exercises. this is incorrect. you need to eat something every 2 hours and include Green tea to your routine to keep the metabolism raised. this will help in fat loss. so the diet is not entirely wrong . but a little modification in the traditional chart would really make big difference.

      1. I am Diabetic and had Fatty Liver so can I follow this diet

      – yes you can if you are on tablets. if you are taking insulin, you will have to adjust the dosage. you have a glucometer at home ? this will help in keeping a daily check of how the diet is affecting you. do not follow this diet if your pp blood sugar is above 275mg/dl . But most importantly , you need to follow a balanced diet in terms of these conditions. please see this diet chart it will help you better than GM diet. – https://www.dietburrp.com/indian-diet-plan-for-diabetes/ .. this diet will not only help you in reducing blood sugar, but also weight.

      2. On day 5 protein day …only Egg White is to be consumed or we can also ear Egg Yellow Yolk
      – only egg whites.

      3. Can i have cabbage carrot green pepper tomato and onion soup popularly know as Wonder soup daily during the 7 days diet regime-

yes this is true. it is a crash diet and if you get back to your regular routine , you will gain back all the weight. but of you follow the diet chart mentioned here – https://www.dietburrp.com/indian-diet-plan-for-weight-loss/ you will maintain the lost weight . :) all the best

      Hey Varsha,

Please follow other healthy diets , like – https://www.dietburrp.com/indian-diet-plan-for-weight-loss/ … the above mentioned chart is definitely a healthier version of GM diet, but i would not recommend you to follow it continuously . you can follow the Gm diet once a month . but not more than that. are you exercising ? working out / walking for 45 mins will increase the pace of weight loss.

        Hi ,

Any 45 minutes workout will help you in burning fat. you can start with walking, then go on to jogging and running . you can do gym exercises. hill climbing, swimming, skating or even play a sport.

    Hi Payal,

A couple of questions regarding the GM diet plan.

Firstly, I’m not quite a milk person and plain milk is a no-no for me. Could you suggest the appropriate quantity of Greek yogurt as a replacement to milk on day 4 of the plan?

Secondly, could you please suggest quantities for a combination of paneer, moong bean sprouts and Greek yogurt to meet the required protein intake of day 5 & 6?

Lastly, can flavored/plain green tea be consumed during this diet?

    Regards,
    P

      Hi Prachi,

Although i replied your mail, but i am posting all the answers here as well so that others may benefit too.

      – you can take 4 glasses of skimmed milk and make curd out of it , once cur is ready, you put the entire curd on a strainer and dont move the strainer for 2 hours . let it lye there ,all the water will come down through the strainer and you will get greek yogurt. you can consume this entire portion for your day 4 . if you are buying ready made, buy 500 ml greek yogurt. (make sure of the sweetning agent used .)

      – 250 Gms of paneer + 50 – 60 gms mung bean + 150 ml curd. and 6 tomatoes ofcourse. for day 5 and same for a little bit more than this for day 6 .

      – yes green tea is good.

        Hi Payal,

Can boiled soybeans and dry roasted soynuts be included in the protein portions of the diet? If yes, could you please suggest a healthy combination of paneer, moong/matki/chana sprouts, soybeans and soynuts and Greek yogurt to meet the required protein intake of day 5 & 6.

Also, for the milk portion of day 4, can I add pure cocoa powder no sugar to flavor milk?

        Thanks!

          Hi Prachi,

yes you can have boiled soybeans and dry roasted soynuts on protein days. i cant really think of a paneer and curd combination (except vegetable gravies ) have paneer seperately and have a sprout and yogurt salad.

yes you can add flavour to your milk

          Hey Priya,

You can skim your milk at home . just boil whichever milk you get at home , and keep it in the refrigerator for 2 hours . remove the cream layer and repeat the same process once again , this way all the fat layer from milk is remove and your milk becomes skimmed. use this milk.

Hey shilpa , i have replied your email . no weight change can be due to several reasons like – if you are expecting your cycles, or constipation may also lead to this. people on pain killers and steroidal medications also find it difficult to lose weight,

      Hi Debika,

Thanks for reading at Dietburrp . you can have these items on the protein day . you can have a mix of 4 egg whites and 100 gms lean chicken. to lean your chicken , buy your cut of meat, put it in a deep freezer for atleast 1 hour . remove this chicken, and now clean it and remove the top thin layer of skin. when you deep freeze chicken, all the saturated fat comes on the surface of the skin and freeze there on top. when you remove the top layer, all the saturated fat is also removed and the chiken now gives you mainly protein as the maximum fat is removed.

On this day , it is best to have a mixed fruit platter without much a do. for day 2 onwards , you can choose any salads from the varieties mentioned on our website under the healthy recipes section.

      Hi Abila,

Congratulation for your wedding. for exercises , i am afraid only a physiotherapist will be able to guide you for what can be done , kindly consult a physiotherapist for the same. diet wise , you can try following this gm diet plan for a week , this is by far the best diet plan to lose upto 4 kgs in a week. after this is done you can then follow the 1200 calorie diet plan on dietburrp. this will help you in maintaining the lost weight. after which you can again repeat the same cycle.

let me know if you have any further questions.

      Hi Poonam,

i would not suggest you to follow the gm diet plan in continuation for an entire month. you can follow this plan once a month. and then get back to healthy earting, and again follow it after a month . people lose around 2-3 kgs or even more at times by following this gm diet plan for a week . All the best

      Hi ,

Congratulations christina. for exercises , i think you must consult a physiotherapist, they can analyse your present condition and accordingly advice you on the exercises that would suit your condition. diet wise , yes you can give gm diet a try. this should help you. but before going so brisk , you can first try following the indian diet plan of 1200 calories on our website – https://www.dietburrp.com/indian-diet-plan-for-weight-loss/ if you feel your current intake is greater than the quantity mentioned here , first follow this plan for a week , then go for gm , that would give you better and sustaining results.

    Hi,
I have tried this diet couple of times and have lost 2-3 kgs by the end of 7th day. But I have observed that after one week I regain the lost kilos(plus one more kilo). How do I avoid this.? Since this diet is restricted to only Fruits and boiled/Steamed/Raw veggies on the 8th day I tend to involve myself in all Rich food. Please advice a diet to be followed after following G.M Diet
