We instantly start looking for them and buying them online or at supermarkets and spend a fortune on them. Here are some Indian foods that are locally available and are equally or even more beneficial for our health and especially for weight loss.

Top 10 Indian Foods For Weight Loss

1] Flaxseeds:

The Indian diet plan for weight loss will not be complete without flax seeds. flax seeds are grown in northern and central parts of India and have been a part of the staple local diet for centuries. Its importance and nutrient contents were highlighted only 2 decades ago. Flax seeds have been enjoying the attention of dieters all over the world ever since.

How does Flax seeds help In a weight loss diet?
  • Lignans – the lignans and fiber in flax seeds help in reaching early satiety (the feeling of fullness). This helps you in cutting down on your food intake. Flaxseeds also help in weight loss by keeping you full for a longer time. The glycemic index of flax seeds is very less, and hence when you add grounded flax seeds to your yogurt or sprinkle it over your salad, it gets absorbed slowly and keeps your blood sugar stable for longer and you do not feel hungry early.
  • Lecithin – Flax seeds contain lecithin. Lecithin helps in breaking the fat from the food and the fiber in the flax seeds helps in carrying these fats to the intestine for elimination. And thus saves you from absorbing most of the calories these fats were to provide you with.
  • Fiber – The soluble and insoluble fiber in flax seeds makes it a natural laxative. Flax seeds help in cleansing your intestine of the metabolic wastes produced during the fat break down while you are on a weight loss regime. Flax seeds help in promoting the growth of healthy bacteria in the gut and thus helping in better digestion.
  • Omega 3 – As we all know, Omega 3 helps in improving heart health. Hence flax seeds are especially good for those who have diabetes and blood pressure or any other heart problem and want to manage their weight.
Tips to include flax seeds in Indian diet plan for weight loss :
  • Use freshly ground flaxseed powder to sprinkle over your yogurt/curd bowl, salads, whole wheat flour dough, dals and on your vegetable preparations too.    * Precaution – while using flax seeds powder, ground flax seeds freshly. The oils in flax seeds powder undergo oxidation quickly when exposed to air.
  • Use roasted flax seeds to make accompaniments like chutneys.
  • You can take a tsp of flax seeds and eat on empty stomach in the mornings.

2] Yogurt / curd:

Curd is an inseparable part of a vegetarian Indian diet for weight loss. If I tell you that you can consume more calories and still lose weight, you will think I am joking. But this is true. A study conducted by the International Journal of sports nutrition and exercise metabolism concluded that 3 servings of curd consumption helped women to lose more fat than those on a low-calorie diet.

How does Curd help in the Indian diet plan for Weight Loss?
  • Calcium – Dr. Robert Heaney, MD, (an internationally recognized expert in bone biology and calcium nutrition with Creighton University in Nebraska) found in a study that calcium helped in better fat break down in individuals who wanted to lose weight. Yogurt is a good food source of calcium has a similar effect.
  • Probiotic – As we know that curd/yogurt has active cultures and they help in the growth of friendly bacteria. It improves digestion and immunity and ensures better nutrient absorption. These probiotics help in weight loss too. Although yogurt alone cannot bring about weight loss, if you are already following a weight loss regime for diet and exercises, the curd will help you in achieving your weight loss goals faster and then maintaining them in the long run.
  • Protein – The protein present in curd facilitates the weight loss process by becoming the source of energy as well as taking care of the ill effects of strict dieting. It will help in the prevention of hair fall and dullness and dryness of the skin. So that your skin glows while you shape up your body.

  • Lycopene– Lycopene is an antioxidant and helps in preventing oxidation damage. This will indirectly help in improving immunity and stamina so that you can work out better and burn more calories. Lycopene also helps you in becoming healthier as you lose weight, It helps you reduce the bad cholesterol from the blood vessels and improves your heart health too.
  • Oligofructose – After a fatty meal, the small intestine releases a Hormone called CCK (cholecystokinin) in the stomach. CCK tightens the valves between the stomach and intestine contributing to the feeling of fullness and helps in reducing the chances of overeating. Hi prathosh ,

nice to hear from you , Your body must have gotten used to the exercises and walking you do and now adjusts to whatever little calories you are intakingf. this happens in a lot of cases where despite of all efforts you dont lose a bit. breaking this plateau requires a lot of patience …. here is what you can do …….. exercise wise – stop doing what you are already doing for a week … and then you surprise your body with a new activity .. for ex – you have been walking all these days , so now change your activity to swimming / zumba dancing / skatting / gyming / playing badminton or lawn tennis … whatever suits you best. tai chi and kick boxing and pillates work excellently in such cases., i know its hard to find time and availabilty of such sports around you .. but if you want to get there .. you need to find harder !!

Food wise – surprise your body yet agin by co nsuming food stuffs that you never did .. it changes your metabolic graph and hence makes you lose weight …. ex – if you have been eating wheat and rice as staples so far … dont eat them for an entire week , and consume other cereals like bajra , jowar , or ragi …. this funda has worked superbly with my clients .. you can try and see if it suits you too ..

payal i guessed and thought body must have got used to routine of daily 30 min walking and same eating habit whatever i have told hence did not lose much calories and because i walked lots of 7 km walk and 5 km walk only has helped me to shred 2 kg atleast .

        now my question is

1 I would like to know same 1200 calories can i change the eating time and eating items ,will it work wonders

to give example ,.currently i eat 8 am ,12:30 pm ,6 pm and 8:30 pm now can i change like 8:30 , 1:30 and 5:00 and 9:00 to confuse body .

similarly 1200 calories means its not necessary i should eat only chukka roti ,rice and apple ,i can have any items right i mean all healthy ones in little items to break it in parts and eat at right way and confuse body to lose weight .

for eg i eat roti morning ,lunch now , so i change as morning dosa and before lunch vegetables and then lunch little ,evening replace apple with protein such as sundal ,etc and night pineapple ,etc

like wise if i keep changing this monthly in different combination ,I am sure body will get terribly confused and will start losing weight ,this is my guess payal .however you are expert ,pls share me your thoughts on this .

Similarly walking i will increase 30 mt to 1 hr and then 2 hr and so on and also will mix and change time ,change distance etc .will make body get confused to lose weight .

pls share me how is my idea payal.

          – yes you can try that .. it works well in a lot of cases , but i cant promise wonders !!

          — yes this is true , you lose weight when you confuse your body , but pace of weight loss may be slow or fast , that you will know only once you give it a try .

Similarly walking i will increase 30 mt to 1 hr and then 2 hr and so on and also will mix and change time ,change distance etc .will make body get confused to lose weight .

          – yes this is good idea .

Hi Payal Thanks a lot first of all wholeheartedly in helping me and being patient with me for all my queries . i am troubling you lot .i am sorry for that ,by nature i am research and curious so i like to experiment a lot and try thats why i question you differently .

few questions payal on weight loss .

1 If i continue same 1200 calories and stopped walking for a week where my BMR is 2000 ,is there chance for me to gain weight, because last 1 week i did not walk due to some knee pain and weight increased 1 kg in 6 days suprised ,pls share your thoughts

2 payal sometimes i see weight fluctuating like sudden 3 days same calorie and no walking weight loss 0.7 kgs and next 3 days same calorie and no walking weight gain 1.2 kg . i am very much suprised of this ,why does this happen .is this normal for everyone .

3 Payal ,i am not sure if i have reached weight loss plateau .but would like to know how this occurs with small example .

say i was 104 kg earlier .i ate only 1000 calorie and cut 1000 calorie and walking – lost 10 kg in 3 months .

now body used to same routine .so do u mean to say 1000 calorie should be reduced one day next day add ,like 1200 calorie one day next day 1000 calorie ,next day 1300 confuse body will this work .

else body got used to this routine of food ,by eating same 1200 calorie however of completely diff food since 2200 types available from fruits to vegetables to rice ,so having these differently+ workout -body knows i walked 30 mins ,but increasing to 1 hour daily and then slowly 2 hr ,3 hr wont it be suprise for body to shed weight fast by breaking routine .pls share your thoughts ,.

3 Payal i am planning to have one cheat day in a week ,reason is sometimes body gets used to same food ,so one day i eat heavy food increase or decrease calorie and kickstart body to burn more by breaking that routine by confusing body will this idea work .

4 last and final payal,i am drinking lot of hot water ,and my diet plan in coming months could be say from may eat fruits and vegetables more and cut one time rice which i am having completely to make it complete riceless diet for last 2 months to break weight loss in all the steps in all the ways by keeping on suprising the body in all stages till last to bring my goal weight 70kgs by June 2015.

pls share your valuable thoughts on my ideas and please give me few more tips to follow .

Thanks for your help payal. I am highly obliged.

            Hi Prathosh,

please find your answers inline –

            – Understanding the body’s pattern for weight loss is not so easy . its not alwayz about figures and calculation. sometimes these calculations fail terribly . if your body is used to follow a pattern of food and workout , no matter how brisk of a workout or however low your calorie intake may be , if it is not further decreased, weight loss becomes difficult. to understand the details of it read – https://www.dietburrp.com/how-to-lose-weight-effectively/

2 payal sometimes i see weight fluctuating like sudden 3 days same calorie and no walking weight loss 0.7 kgs and next 3 days same calorie and no walking weight gain 1.2 kg . i am very much suprised of this ,why does this happen .is this normal for everyone .

            – your everyday weight depends on a lot of factors . the most variable being water , if you increase your water intake , your weight will increase initially but if you check after a week you will see a considerable loss. climate is important too. always check your weight once a week to know the exact reading . do not be happy with the recorded loss of 2-3 days or dont be dishearted with gain recorded of 2-3 days . always check dry weight .

3 Payal ,i am not sure if i have reached weight loss plateau .but would like to know how this occurs with small example .say i was 104 kg earlier .i ate only 1000 calorie and cut 1000 calorie and walking – lost 10 kg in 3 months .

you are doing the same mistake mentioned in this article – https://www.dietburrp.com/how-to-lose-weight-effectively/ so when you are already consuming very little calorie, the only option left is changing the pattern of exercise , and type of foods you are consuming and timings .

3 Payal i am planning to have one cheat day in a week ,reason is sometimes body gets used to same food ,so one day i eat heavy food increase or decrease calorie and kickstart body to burn more by breaking that routine by confusing body will this idea work .

            – you can have this , but workout should be continued .

            – yes you can try this .

Hi Payal ,Thanks for your help and giving me all answers .

Few suggestions i would like to get from you .

1 Currently I am doing 1 hour brisk walk daily and followed by 45 mins walk next day and then 1 Hour brisk walk .brisk walk in sense very brisk ,lot of sweat and core extreme . I walked past 2 days say 10 km in 2 hour and today 7 km in 1 hour ,like wise ,.I am planning to increase workouts and intensity slowly to 1.5 to 4 hours ,if required even 5 hours of brisk walk ,reaching upto 20 km per day . now my question is will this burn extreme calories if i mix and do like one day 1 hour ,next day 45 mins, next day 1 hr and like wise keep increasing intensity and mix workouts like brisk one day ,medium one day ,slow one day or combination of all – WILL THIS BURN EXTREME CALORIES PER DAY PAYAL PLS SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS .

2 payal now I was earlier sedentary and consumed 1200 calories now for my height and weight BMR shows 2000 calorie per day .currently i am like in moderate activity level ,so now does that mean i have to increase calories little so that i will burn fat more or should i keep this 1200 calories and continue the above workouts mentioned and that will burn extreme calorie-pls share your thoughts .

3 Good news ,i walked to a different route yesterday 2 hours brisk walking 10 km per hour ,suddenly by god grace ,.i found zumba dancing class centre.i have got number ,will speak soon and enroll ,.thanks a lot for giving me this lifestyle ,.Now I am 93.8 kg payal ,this zumba dance i heard is high level dancing .will it work for me .i mean can i be a dancer or perform well in zumba .not that i have low confidence ,i am asking .but i am still fat so will it work .pls share your thoughts .

4 Good news ,I am out of obesity as per BMI Calculator .93.8 kg as on March 2nd 2015 for height 5 feet 10 inches ,currently came to overweight from obesity ,thanks a lot payal for your support and guidance .

5 Weight loss plateau,in case if it might happen ,I am planning 100 ways to break it by keeping on suprising body by extreme work outs and keep body increasing intensity like walking 1 hr ,2hr ,3 hr ,then walking in sand ,walking in mountain ,walking in beach ,walking with weights, walking in rock ,walking in heavy terrian areas ,walking in steeples, then up and down stairs 100 times ,then walking 700 steps ,walking 1000 steps.then aerobics ,yoga ,zumba dancing, punching bag ,plus whatever you have told activities + my own ideas ,apart from this when i reach 85 kg will increase drinking water ,lemon with hot water ,then lots of fruits vegetables, cut rice by 25% and once i reach 80 kg ,complete cut of rice and all vegetables ,fruits ,lemon ,hot water ,water ,chappathi ,etc combinations + i have kept 2200 types of veg food low in calorie to break weight loss plateau and suprise the body in all possible ways .pls share your thoughts .

I am very passion and loving this ,and doing this by giving my more than 110% payal with extreme seriousness .

By God grace i expect 70 kg i have to reach by August 2015 that is i have to lose 23 .8 kg in 180 days by above ,my humble question is pls tell me as a dietician if i follow whatever i have mentioned the chances of this happening in % – i mean is it 50% or 80% or 90% .

Please share me your valuable thoughts payal .

thanks for your help and support .

            Hi ,

1] yes it will help .. you should learn about interval training. that is more beneficial and less tiring.

2] 2000 calories is to maintain the current weight. but now because you want to lose fat , you need to substract 500 cals , which get you to 15oo cals . make sure the increase is in terms of fruits and salads.

3] yes zumba is excellent way to workout those extra kgs .

            4] wow , congratulations .

5] wow .. too many options and too much excitement .. this is perfect for your goal .

honestly , i cannot predict , but the way you are going youll be there soon . actually you need to keep trying it to know if its working . so dont worry about plateaus and keep following the routine. once you feel that weight loss has slowed down , we would discuss and see what would suit you in that hour.

you are a great motivation to a lot of people who want to lose weight . i am happy that i am of help to you. all the best !

As of now I am 92.5 kg payal ,last seen weight March 14 2015 ,lost 1.4 kg in 12 days ,slowly weight loss i am doing .instead of walking daily ,switched to alternate walking for giving body surprise as well . if its 1 hour walk ,i walk fast ,then slow then medium fast i mix in all combination payal ,idea is to cheat body and make it burn calories in all 3 stages ,by breathing becoming equal in all 3 ways . apart from that started doing Vajrasana payal .5 mts daily it is also burning some calories . like wise I am making this weight loss not just as weight loss .I am doing with 110% interest ,commitment ,passion and love and will power payal .I am loving this so much .By Gods grace its working payal . I have 1000 ideas to make it more interesting and enjoyable by changing patterns differently like surya namaskar ,pranayama ,yoga ,zumba ,walking in walkathon .Payal i walked 15 kms on 26th Jan 2015 in 2 hrs .one day i didnt became tired .now i am participating in walkathon which is being conducted in chennai .its 20 km walking payal. winning or losing doesnt matter payal ,i have to give tough competition to others and also i have to enjoy the activity .so I am participating payal .will keep you updated soon payal ,Thanks a lot for all your help and assistance .

            April 12, 2015 at 1:07 am

hi payal how are you ,hope you are doing good by god grace .

I am back with results earlier i interacted with you march 18 2015 and at that time i was 92.5 kg and i was following whatever i mentioned not even 100% but occasionally small changes and April 1 2015 my weight was 90.3 kgs .

Now relatives came for a week payal and i did not have any option had foods in hotel unavoidable idly ,.dosa.tomato chutney i avoided white chutney .occasionally 2 days i had 2 pc mysore park . one day i had rajdhani food in hotel for INR 500 hope u will be aware .and everything was sweet and i couldnt avoid like wise past 12 days from April 1 daily it has become hotel and i couldnt avoid situation .but i made sure i eat in moderate quantity few days and few days high quantity and one or 2 days i cut hotel somehow like wise i tried this .

Walking i got only 3 days to do . but it was sand walking in beach for 2 days and rest all no time for walking .

Despite all this i checked my weight payal yesterday it was 89.4 kgs how is it possible payal .whatever i ate was high calorie and did not burn much yet weight loss happened . is it because BMR increased from 2000 till 2500 because of continous workouts of 2 hr walking or 1 hr walking in march 2015 . because suprised or is it because of cheat meal has worked to my favour because some days i couldnt stop had to drink fanta ,eat butter pop corn ,ghee , then pani poori ,etc .

            Pls provide me clarity .

If i increase my workouts be it any workouts like cardio ,strength training or muscle mass does it increase my BMR and that will keep losing weight payal even if i consume moderate calorie .

say for eg BMR 2500 , i ate 3000 calories 4 days and next 3 days i ate 2000 calories still weight loss did happen .

Now from 1000 calorie can i go for 1500 calorie payal slightly however will make sure increase will be in terms of brown rice ,salads ,vegetables ,fruits and occasional weekly once having food little more . -pls suggest .

Diet now is not stopped ,but i feel has taken different direction because of whatever foods ate and no proper workouts .still i have control .can start any time and will maintain whatever i mentioned . just i consider this as temporary stopped like what if i had some sickdays so I am confident things will be once again taken in right direction payal .

Apart from this any suggestions Payal from you on my weight loss . Current is 89.4 kgs .

            Hi Prathosh ,

yes exercises increase your BMR , and thats the whole point for exercising to lose weight. when a well settled routines goes for a toss , the body enters the compatibility mode and continues on losing weight or gaining weight (as per the last few months) for a time frame , after that window is crossed, the body starts reacting as per the current food and exercise habit. so if you continue to eat crap , the weight will start going up . and then getting back on track is difficult. you are lucky that the window is still on and your bady is still not responding to the haywire routine. but dont push your luck much . 15 days is all that the body will take to throw a tantrum . so get back on routine . once in a while going here or there is fine but avoid continually breaking up the routine.

Hi Payal Thanks for your advice .

I will get back to the routine between i wanted to know from 1200 calories can i increase it to 1500 calories . i ll make sure increase is in terms of fruits, vegetables, salads. brown rice ,etc . -pls share your thoughts .

2 payal can i eat ice cream want to know . its 4.5 months i havent touched ice cream despite i ate all other . is it okay i have ice cream monthly once or twice and still will continue workouts ?

3 I today walked 9 km payal and slowly i walked . i wont break routine . to compensate whatever i ate last week .this 3 days i had very less calories say 550-700 and survived . had lots of water so am balancing somehow . payal .i know less calorie is risky .but i took risk after analysing all prons and cons so it didnt affected me since i am watching my body how it reacts and responds .now compensation done .from tomorrow will get back to 1200+ calorie routine payal .- your thoughts .

            Hi ,

            1] yes you can

2] Please dont punish yourself so hard .. its ok to have a meal or 2 off

3] no that was not really required as you had not gained any weight . but its ok now , get back to your routine and it will be ok .

Hi.. I have few confusion regarding the diet plan given, kindly help me to resolve it:
In your diet plan it is mentioned to consumeVeg Khichdi in afternoon but khichdi is prepared with white rice and dal so won’t that add to weight gain because of rice?
can you kindly guide me about thus.
    thank you

      Hi
I am 32 years old female, 5ft 9 inches and weight 72 kg. I do desk job and drive car so very less walking throughout the day. i want to shed some extra weight from my belly and thigh areas. i find running tiresome and i cant do crash dieting. please suggest me easy exercises that would help me to lose weight.

also i want to know the gap time between taking Lukewarm water with lemon in morning and tea. i heard that gap should be atleast 1 hour to 2 hours. please clarify this.

also is coconut water is good for weight loss?

      thank you,

        Hi Aufo,

Thanks for reading at Dietburrp . , yes coconut water will support your nutrition system while dieting.you need to have a 1 hour gap between lemon water and tea or milk intake. some people have very good digestion , in which case the gap can be 30 mins . but on an average its good to have 1 hour gap to avoid ending up with an upset stomach.

if you find jogging tiring ., start with atleast 45 mins of walking , when you see good results you will be inspired to get involved with other exercises.

        Hi Leena,

tomato veg is tamato chi chutney . chop the tomatoes , in very little oil , add mustard seeds , curry leaves for phodani ( seasoning). then add chopped tomato, chilly flakes and salt and corriener leaves.
